The Amateur Poker Association & Tour is pleased to announce details of its free to enter WSOP Fantasy Staker 2009 competition.  One lucky winner will have the chance to win a paid entry to the English Amateur Poker Championship in October and an option to enter their chosen forum into the UK Team Championship in December.

The Game

APAT are giving you a bankroll of $10,000 fantasy dollars to stake real players at the WSOP main event.

You can use your fantasy dollars to stake between 1 and 10 players at the event, which will start on July 3rd.  You may also choose to not spend part or all of your fantasy dollars in the hope that any positive fantasy bankroll will increase your chances of winning a prize at the end of the competition.

The buy in for the WSOP main event is $10,000.

If you stake one player for 50% of his buy in, you will be entitled to add 50% of his winnings to your fantasy bankroll. You can choose to stake between 1 and 10 players for up to $10,000 fantasy dollars in total.  Here is an example of a Fantasy Staker Scorecard:

1) Phil Ivey – 70%
2) Gus Hansen – 20%
3) John Kabbaj – 10%

If when the tournament has concluded, we find that Ivey has won $100,000 and Kabbaj has won $50,000 then your return would be 70% of $100,000 ($70,000) and 10% of $50,000 ($5,000), or $75,000 in total. You would have to deduct the $10,000 in stakes leaving you with a final Fantasy Bankroll of $65,000.

Prizes

1) The entrant with the highest Fantasy Bankroll at the end of the competition will win a paid entry to the English Amateur Poker Championship in Bolton in October and a guaranteed option to purchase an entry for their chosen forum to the UK Team Championship scheduled for December (which will have 4 less teams than last year’s sold out event).

2) The next five entrants will win a clickfest pass, guaranteeing an option to purchase a seat at the English Amateur Poker Championship in Bolton.

Rob Swindells: International Win

Rob Swindells: International Win

Popular APAT member and Manchester Poker Club team captain Rob Swindells, has just won $95,000, finishing runner up in the PokerStars Sunday Million Warm Up tournament.

By a twist of fate, an injury meant he was unable to play cricket for his local side on Sunday, so instead played poker and qualified for the Sunday Warm Up on PokerStars for a nominal entry fee.

A field of 3,690 runners started this high profile Sunday tournament, and Rob managed to battle his way through to the money and was then joined by a number of APAT railers who witnessed the rise up the prizeladder.

Rob was pretty much around average stack for most of the tournament, but with less than 100 players left, he started working through the gears.  When the tournament was down to 30 players, Rob found himself in 3rd place and perfectly positioned to make the final table.  And that he did, at around 2 o’clock in the morning.

The final table appeared to be an inexperienced one at this level and without Rob needing to get too involved, players were getting knocked out.  An hour into the final table, Rob had reached heads up with ‘Dennis2410′ from Herning.  A deal was done with both players playing out for the honour of the win.  The luck went against Rob heads up and so he had to settle for 2nd place and a $95,000 payday.

This was an absolutely superb performance from APAT regular Rob, who appeared to be in complete control of his game throughout the tournament.

Rob will be in action at the Scottish Amateur Poker Championship in Edinburgh on July 18th & 19th.

Congratulate Rob

Harraghy: Belfast Winner

Harraghy: Belfast Winner

Northern Division, Matchday 11: After four consecutive matches without scoring points, Edinburgh Poker Club brought some of their early season form back to the table to secure two match points in the APAT National Online League on Sunday night.   Belfast continue to close the gap at the top of the division taking a maximum three match points here, with the final match point going to Dundee Poker Club who are one point behind Glasgow in the race for the third qualification spot for the National League final in November.

On the night it was Chris Kelly (2nd), Ben Burnhill (3rd) and Louis Manson (8th) who awoke the slumbering Scottish team and delivered the crucial two match points to protect their lead in the division.

A very powerful looking Belfast team took the three match points and are now only two points behind Edinburgh at the top of the Northern Division.  Four of the Northern Irish club’s number made the final table, with starring roles played by Gerrard Harraghy (1st), Colin O’Prey (4th), Michael O’Prey (6th) and Nick Avery (7th).

Robert McGraw (5th) and Donna McGraw (10th) contributed to ensure Dundee picked up the final match point, keeping the pressure up on Glasgow Poker Club.

After eleven matches, Edinburgh lead the division on 15 points.  Belfast are in second position on 13 points with Glasgow in third on 10 points.  Dundee are fourth on 9 points, with Dublin and Newcastle level on 7 points.  Stockton-on-Tees, Aberdeen, Carlisle and Sunderland are fighting for a place in the Second Divsion of the National Poker League in Season Four.

Darren Shallis: Cardiff Captain

Darren Shallis: Cardiff Captain

Southern Division, Matchday 11: South London and Cardiff Poker Clubs continue to dominate the Southern Division of the APAT National Online League.

On Sunday night, it was South London that took the three match points when Neil Innes (2nd) and Tim Magnus (4th) starred on the final table.

Paul Mcarthy of Cardiff took the individual win on the night with his team mate Richard Rudling-Smith (9th) also making the final table, with both results good enough to deliver another two match points for Cardiff.

Brighton Poker Club took the remaining single match point thanks to Joe Carr-Hill (3rd) and Bob Bulman (7th).

After eleven matches, Cardiff lead the division with 16 points, South London are a point back on 15 with Plymouth in third on 11.  Bristol are in fourth on 7 points with Southampton, Thanet and Brighton on 4 points.  North London, Luton and Swansea are at the foot of the table, with only pride to play for as the season progresses.

Parker: Win For Leeds

Parker: Win For Leeds

Central Division, Matchday 11: Leeds Poker Club stole a march on their opposition for the Championship in the Central Divison of the APAT National League.   Club player Wayne Parker took the individual honours with his second divisional win but it was weight of numbers that gave the three match points to Walsall Poker Club, who now go joint second in the divsion with Birmingham and Manchester.

Andrew Duncan (2nd), Paul Foy (3rd) and Marc Ward (5th) starred for Walsall. Parker’s result was good enough for Leeds to secure two match points, leaving the final match point to Manchester Poker Club, thanks to Rob Swindell’s (6th) and Chris Vickers (7th).  The fact that Swindells was on his way to securing a $95,000 payday in the PokerStars Sunday Warm Up at the same time made his achievement in finalling all of the more remarkable.

After eleven matches, Leeds lead the division with 16 points.  Birmingham, Walsall and Manchester are joint second with 13 points with Liverpool four points back on 9.  Sheffield, Blackpool, Bolton, Nottingham and Stoke now appear out of the running for league honours this season.  However they will still be looking to secure a position in Division Two of the league in Season Four.

Armitage: Scottish Online Champion

Armitage: Scottish Online Champion

The fourth online event of Season Three provided the most experienced trio of medal winners in APAT Championship history. Ninety two players entered the APAT Scottish Online Poker Championship. The $55 buy in gave them all a shot at a $1,380 first prize, national title, gold medal and an entry to a £1,000 buy in Grosvenor UK Poker Tour main event.

This tournament saw a number of highly ranked players absent due to tournament commitments elsewhere in the UK, providing a great opportunity for the entrants to win an APAT major and push their way up the National Rankings.  As normal in Championship events players started with a 10,000 chip deepstack and 15 minute blinds. Within fifteen minutes of the start we had already lost one player and after four hours of further play, Antony Wolsey (‘Pilf’), who final tabled the Irish Online Championship, burst the final table bubble and exited in eleventh.
