Computer Processor advice
« on: December 14, 2011, 10:22:42 AM »
What is the best Processor?

i3 or i5 for £50 extra or Pentium P6200

Is the Pentium P6200 the equivalent of Intel Core i5? Which is best?

Looking at Laptops at around the £400 mark

The i3 ones i have been looking at are around the £360/£380

The i5 ones are about the £430 mark with the P6200 somewhere in the middle

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

I was in John lewis getting a laptop for my son, they explained the io5 is the best. But they were trying to close a sale of course!!

I think they are quite trustworthy

Which they did!

I think John Lewis have some good staff, much better than PC World. They helped me when I got my surround sound, and actually got pointed to the sale stuff, had the differences explained, and I think I got a great deal.

Intel"s mobile processors can be split into two current families:-

Calpella:-

P6200 + others
I3
I5
I7

and

Huron River

B710
B950 +others
I3
I5
I7

Chief river is scheduled to launch this year as well - their new family of third generation processsors.

An I3 processor will give you better performance than a P6200 - although this is partially dependent on the other components.

Value wise - it depends on what you are going to be using them for. If you are interested in gaming then look at I5 at a minimum.

For most standard laptop users a P6200 will do the job just fine but nothing more. Core I3 and above processors are pushed hard by Intel for good reasoning as they do a fantastic job. I would say that a Core I processor is worth the extra money for the speed bump that it will give you.

I3-2330M is my personal fav.

Would it be worthwhile holing on until the Chief River comes out or with it being new, it will be out of my price range? But then again the i5 price will drop.
