thing is, if you feel the need to protect your winnings by removing them from the table, just cash out and join another table........ and if you say you want to stay where you are cos you are ruling the table, why on earth would you want to remove chips and lessen your profit potential?

I don"t agree with it, but I know why people do it.

They"re on a table that is high risk / high reward.  They double up, and there"s a chance that they can win some more, but also a chance that they"ll lose some. 

So they "go south" and in doing so reduce the amount they could potentially lose.  Of course, it might limit the amount they can go on to win - but they are securing a minimum win level by removing some of the money from their stack.
