APAT OPENS ???
« on: March 27, 2008, 20:32:56 PM »
I was reading another thread where a new member had asked:

this may sound stupid, but is the irish open- only for irish people?

It got me thinking... Does anybody else think that with the ever growing membership of the APAT that maybe they should change how they hold the tournaments? Surely a way to solve having to participate in a "Clickfest" and ensure that everyone gets a chance to play in an APAT event would be to have only Scottish, English, Irish & Welsh people allowed to play in their respetive opens? Then you could have an end of year tournament with the top 25 from each open playing in a British Open tournament or something???

I know people who seem to get a seat at every event may have objections to this but isn"t one of APAT's main objectives to let players who couldn"t otherwise participate in big tournaments do so for a relatively small fee?

I mean I would LOVE to play in the upcoming Scottish Open and as I cant get onto BSQ my only option would be the clickfest... So I would basically have to sit by my computer and hope to get a seat. Even if I did get a seat I would most definitely not get a chance to buy my friend one too (no net access) so would have to travel alone.

Does anybody else have any opinions on this?

Essentially that would make them regional tournaments, and we already have a Regional series.

Also - isn"t part of the fun of an APAT weekend travelling places?

Yeah but the regionals are only £20 buy-ins and smaller fields. You can get that at any local casino or cardroom. A big part of the fun (for me anyway) would be competing against a large field. Yes part of the fun is going somewhere for the weekend but there is no point travelling to your nearest regionals just for a £20 game you could get locally.

There are considerably more English than Scots or Welsh.

Yeah, never thought of that... Well make the English open all English and each of the other opens have at least half the seats put aside for people from that country or something and the rest open to all.

Your friend can always turn up and go on the alternate list, there"s always some spaces available this way, just turn up at casino opening time and get on the list first (ish)  Ok it"s not guaranteed, but it"s worth a shout.

Or to play and qualify through the Regionals. Can you and your friend not play in either of them (5th April UK wide and 12th April at DTD) ... ?

Wouldn"t there be a problem of being classed as "racist" and against the "Anti Racism" Laws?

Also English only event, I"m sure there would be people who would say that would be too elitist.

I"m also English with a "Welsh" father, does that mean I can play in England and Wales?

Also being "Open" events constitues actually being "open" to anybody.

Sorry but I don"t think this is workable.

Here"s one he made earlier...
