I would be up for this, think I am the 12th, only experience being played using bookends on parents dining room table with a golf ball, should be enough I would imagine.

haha :) stuck you down Brian.

We"ve now 12, so I"ve increased max players to 16.

The format I"m thinking of is:

4 leagues of 4 players, everyone plays each other in their league in a round-robin format. The top 2 of each league (so 8 players) go through to the knockout stages.

8 players (Quarter Final) > 4 players (Semi Final) > 2 players (Final).

For the Round-Robin/QF/SF stages we"ll play "Best of 3", then moving to "Best of 5" for the final. Note: It"s first to 11 points wins a game, and you can win on your or your opponents serve (you each get 2 serves, then swap). To make it easier to remember, whoever loses the first game serves first in the second game and so on. (we"ll toss a coin for initial server and starting end, and swap ends after each game).

Right, time to do the math...

Based on 16 players, we"ll be playing:

6 matches in each of 4 leagues = 24 matches * "best of 3" matches = (average of 2.5 games a match) 60 games.

A game takes 4 minutes on average, so 60 x 4 = 4 hours(!). However, if we can commandeer 2 tables, that means 2 hours.

The rest of the tourney will take a maximum of:

4 x QF (12 games = 48 mins / 2 tables = 24 mins)
2 x SF (6 games = 24 min / 2 tables = 12 mins)
1 x F (5 games = 20 min / 1 table = 20 min)

24+12+20 = 56 mins.

Total tourney time = 2hrs 56mins. Start at 10am, finish at 1pm. (that"s cutting it a bit fine with any inevitable delays, so I suggest a disgustingly early "first game" time of 9.30am!!, to ensure everyone gets back to day2 of the APAT Team Champs in time).

Note: This is just an initial format idea, so is subject to change.

There"s now just 2 spaces left! Though I"ll open a reserve list after that, or maybe even increase capacity again!! :D

Going to contact the Luton Table Tennis Association to see if they can help :)

Do I need to find a team for the poker or can I just come for the table-tennis?

You could just come for the table-tennis. Quite a long way for potentially 3 games though... unless you"re a pro on the sly?...

Depends - it might be worth it. How much is the prize-pool?

11-0 = 21.8 secs per point

11-10 = 11.42 sec per point

The average being 16.62 per point, giving you around 15 point game as an average  11-4.

4 minutes seems short per game when you consider,

chat/banter inbetween
mis-serves
ball behind player fetching
what is the score enquires
final league postions
QF set up games

just my thoughts.  Great idea though!

Thanks Waz.

I based the timings on a match I played vs a mate on Tuesday night...

We ended up 13-11 in games, and it took about 75 mins. Most games were very close. That gives just over 3 minutes a game, so I rounded it to 4minutes in my calculations to be generous.

I think most games will end up 2-0 to one player, as there may be some difference in skills. Also, a lot of points can last just 2 or 3 shots, or sometimes even a foul serve - there is no "second serve".

But... I may ditch the "best of 3" for the Round Robin stages and make them either:

a) "best of 2 games" and award 2 points for a win, and 1 point for a draw.

or

b) make it just a 1 game match. (this will speed things up considerably, but might also mean some players don"t feel they"ve played enough...)

Hard to please everyone, and fit the game into a 3 hour window. (I think 10am to 1pm is about the best time to run this, 9.30am start is just a bit toooo early)...
