OUCH!
« on: April 18, 2008, 14:16:50 PM »
Could I have escaped this?

Low blinds, but the table was reasonably frisky and the pots were good value..

the villain of the piece had been raising with A rag and I"d taken a couple of pots against him earlier when he bet out representing a hand I didn"t think he"d got...

After the flop you were never getting away from this hand.

Pr-flop though it should have been possible.

Had the villain been raising with Ace rag after another raise or only against limpers? Also how much was he raising with his Ace rag hands?
How can you call that.... you should have bet more...... I was all-in...... well you should have had more to bet.

My notes have him described as erratic and potentially a maniac... he"d reraise preflop, make a C bet and then check the turn and fold to a small bet on the river. Other times he"d hold on and keep betting to the bitter end with second pair..

I"m thankful our stacks weren"t bigger

Like above - post flop, just unlucky.

Pre flop - depends on the opponent. I assume when he was raising with A rag, these were not reraises.
What did you put him on when he reraised? If you thought that it was hand (like premium pair), that he would never let go of after the flop, then you can just about call pre-flop as to make it profitable you need to be able to win a minimum of 7.5x your call [~ odds of flopping set]

As it"s costing you £2.40 to call, you need to be able to win £18. You have the £3.80 in pot plus his remaining stack of £19, so provided he will nearly always stack off when you hit set, then you can call.

If he is a player that tends to reraise light, then calling out of position is definitely not going to be a good play with a hand like 77. You would need to either fold or reraise.

EDIT: Just saw your post saying he reraises a lot. Personally, I"d probably fold a hand like 77 OOP then unless I was confident he would fold 10j type hands to a 4-bet: possibly could make it about £6.50 and can then get out hand if he shoves over top.

Pre-flop, good call.  If you know he probably has a big hand, and if he has a decent stack (he does in this case) you have the implied odds to set mine.

Once you"ve hit your set, all your chips are going in regardless.
