On the way home last night I had to call into the Cheshire Oaks, the coliseum part. On the way in I was behind one of those dinky toys. It was a Vauxhall VX thingy. I was thinking how low and small it was and, if I was honest a waste of time.

The owner probably loves his car so who am I to knock it. Anyway as we entered the car park next to Argos a Corsa was in front of the dinky toy. The lady driver of the Corsa then spotted a parking space opposite Argos.

She must have thought that she was going to have that spot before anyone else. So she braked hard, slammed the car in reverse, keeping her eyes firmly locked on the valuable space, and backed right into the front of the dinky toy.

She had a slight indentation in her bumper and the dinky toy had major structural damage to the front.

I am sticking to my big estate car thank you very much.

On the BBC website

"A monastery near Vienna, Austria is offering men the chance to be a monk for a weekend. Franciscans from Maria Enzersdorf, site of a monastery since the 15th Century, are opening their doors as they need recruits."

"During the weekend they will have the chance to work and pray with the monks."

That's the "what to do after you get knocked out of APAT" sorted then for the weekend in May.

Real comedy in the aquarium tonight.

Myself and the wee man got donked out of the main tourney, we play a sit and go. Wee man ends up in a three way. 3rd goes out - 11 players pay out 60 40 10.

So 3rd gets £10

People are clammering for a chop to get another game on the go.

Wee man says "wanna chop"
oppo says "I have more chips so what about 60 -40"

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

You never mentioned my hand in the main event...!!!

Blinds are at 12k / 6k with 1k antes...  6 players left...  5 are paid...

I had just taken a hit to take me down to 16k... Played 2 hands got cards similar to J 2, so hung on until I am UTG.  I only have 14k chips at this point, so I pushed them all in, blind of course,  Fold, Fold, Fold, Fold SB who has loads of chips and finally, BB looks at his cards ( 10 2 off ), he has 2k to call and run it down, the pot is 38k...  His 2k makes it 40k..  His stack is approx 50k to 60k...  and he folds... LOL..  anyways, I took the next 3 or 4 blinds uncontested and actually came 3rd...  It was the most unbelieveable fold I have seen LOL...  Never stopped giggling for an hour...

Whilst understanding advertising and its various merits for companies, for every well executed marketing campaign there is probably an equally memorable disaster.

A few I recall..

Starbucks
Back in the heady days of 2002 the coffee giant quickly learnt that viral marketing campaigns can backfire, and spectacularly. Starbucks issued a free coffee coupon via email to a few of its staff. The  suggestion was that they "mail it to a friend". It turns out on the internet we are all friends. Several coupon boards and photocopiers later Starbucks were in trouble.

To make matter worse Starbucks omitted an expiry date on the voucher. A few days, and millions of cups of coffee, later they had to issue numerous statements that they would no longer honour the deal.

The company were not only heavily criticised, one angry customer even tried to sue Starbucks for over $100m.

Product placement: James Bond, Die Another Day
A trip to the cinema is a golden opportunity for advertisers. In the old days it started as soon as you walked into the foyer, extended into the 30 minutes of ads but stopped once the film commenced. These days however the movie itself has become the platform for advertising, known as "product placement". Some are subtle but "Die Another Day" was completely over the top.

Bond movies have always been about material objects, the car, the watch and the gadget. However, in Die Another Day it went into intergalactic warp drive. By the end of the movie I knew which brand of Vodka went into the Vodka Martini; what life is like in BA first class; and how the perfect sweeping second hand of an Omega Seamaster could win the Oscar for best supporting actor.

Bill Gates, Windows 98
There are two golden rules of television appearances. The first is to have a compelling reason to be there, the second, if you are selling the virtues of a product, is to be sure that it works. Poor old Bill Gates failed on both counts during the launch of Windows 98:

Bill looked uncomfortable in the first place but his discomfort got worse as his flagship software product crashed live on TV and the whole world got to see what a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) looks like. It could have all been laughed off, but the real-life experience for millions was of the same blue screen.

Brylcreem and David Beckham
Sometimes when brands need a little helping hand the answer can be found with celebrity endorsement. Sadly as many brands have discovered, celebrities are a fickle bunch. Just ask Tiger Woods' sponsors.

Take Brylcreem and David Beckham. All the ingredients were in place for a happy marriage. Brylcreem as a brand was stagnant, its products generally associated with WW2 fighter pilots and anyone else over the age of 70 that had managed to cling onto their hair. Golden Balls on the other hand was on the way to the top, and the number one male icon in Brylcreem's target market. To make things even better, his hair was an even hotter topic than his football.

Sadly the marriage didn't even last a year. To sell the product, the single pre-requisite required Beckham to have some hair, which he had decided, very publically, to shave off. Brylcreem were in trouble. The advertising campaign had just got into gear, the company was stuck with pre-bought air time, and to make matters worse every kid in the country was following Beck's advice and opting for the more streamlined look.

A final thought. Is an awful marketing campaign such a bad thing, or is it true that the only worse thing than being talked about is not being talked about?

Similar to Lawrie McMenemy advertising Kaliber Alcohol Free Beer, then getting done for drink driving..!!  LOL

You may have noticed I am conspicuous by my absence in the Swansea APAT. It wasn't due to any slowness on my part or any other nefarious reason other than an imposed one.

The boss was amenable to the idea of remote support, unfortunately the boss of the boss was not and threw in a three line whip. So I must be exclusively available on Saturday from 12noon for 8 hours. Bad Beat, I really enjoy the APAT weekends as well.

However I am sending my representative to keep the family end up as it were. Yep the Wee Man got in by the skin of his teeth last night and will be in Swansea.

Well that was a turnup for the books - I had hard cash on the Scots as well.

So to THE match this weekend. With the knee jerk press reaction to the French defeat (only 1 loss in 13 matches FFS) Ireland will be looking to bounce back with a win against England.

With quick possession, we have the backline to make it pay. Surprise selection ? Sexton showed last weekend (against Scarlets) his capacity for bringing his outside backs into play and, between a midfield of Gordon D"Arcy and Brian O"Driscoll and a back three of Murphy, Tommy Bowe and Keith Earls, there is considerable attacking potential to tap into.

A huge responsibility rests on the shoulders of Sexton. He showed against South Africa last November that he possesses the mental strength and playing ability to be a success at this level and this is just the sort of challenge to bring him on. Having Ronan O"Gara on the bench strengthens Irish options.

I think that England"s attacking ploys have revolved around forward rumbles and the kicking of out-half Jonny Wilkinson. Our defensive system, which wobbled in Paris when the "shooters" were taken out of play by the rampant French, badly needs to reassert itself today and I think it will.

Finally, we must keep our discipline -- Paris showed once again how yellow cards can be game-deciding.

England will score points through Wilkinson, but if our defence can return to its shut-out ways, there is greater potential in our line-up for touchdowns which are likely to prove the difference between victory and defeat.

This contest promises to be tense, hard-fought and, in all probability, won't be great to watch.  However, we have the capacity to come out on top in a close contest.

Verdict: Ireland

conditions aren"t great but that"s no real excuse for this pedestrian game that"s slower than the slowest sloth.

8-6 -- need to play some rugby lads
