I try my upmost to make as many APAT live events as possible and will be doing the same in season 7. However the fates have construed against me for the last two events of this season. I have only got one person at work who can cover for me if I am away and, to be fair, he has been very accommodating over all the seasons covering me. Luton and DTD are a step too far as he is out of the country on both occasions.

So sadly I will not be making a fool of myself at these events. I could take my PC and work remotely  (I do most support remotely at home anyway) but if the proverbial hits the fan and I was not available I would not be flavour of the month..

Damnit

On the BBC Website.

If I were you son I would spend a few days prior to this thinking hard about your sanity.  ::)

A huge kick off today over the finding of horse meat in some beef burgers at several well known retailers. Cue the deluge of jokes on FB and other mediums. There really was a groundswell of disgust against this as well.

I had to think about why people are quite happy to eat Pork, Lamb, Beef, Chicken, Duck etc etc etc. But not horse. Is there any logic to that? Are they seen as pets, are they historically seen as helping man in war and at work before mechanisation. Is it simpler than that and they are considered companions like the Dog. You wouldn't eat a pet would you? Are they also considered cute or noble?  We are quite happy to breed some animals for slaughter but not the horse. I really don't know.

Why do we cherish some species over others, if it is such a shock why don't people consider going Vegan and keep all meat off their plates.

Or is it a basic case of xenophobia because the French eat them, the English won't..

If it says beef on the wrapper and there"s horse inside it"s a big deal, whatever your feelings are about eating horse.

If it says vegetarian on the wrapper and contains uniQuorn that"s a bigger issue

No, there is no logic to it. I have a friend from Ghana, who tells me that he has eaten many cats, especially on his birthday, which is a common custom there. You buy it alive in a sack and kill it yourself while it"s still in there. People there think of them as they would think of a chicken, which seems more logical than treating them like a member of the family, as people do here.

The logic in not eating cats and dogs is that they are carnivores which means it"s more likely that they won"t taste very nice.

The nicest tasting meat tends to be fruit eaters followed by grass and grain eaters - obviously that can altered by modern farming technique but there is at least a vaguely sensible reason why we don"t tend to eat meat eaters.

Obviously that should include horse meat which many seem to see as unpalatable - but to be honest I don"t think I"ve seen or heard a single person say about this current "scandal" that the horse meat in the burgers was disgusting, they"ve pretty much all said exactly the same as Ger has said. I"m not 100% sure who they are arguing with when I haven"t come across the opposite position anywhere.

If there can be horse in your beef, then there could be beef in your lamb or pork in your kangaroo! If you don"t eat certain meat due to your religious beliefs then packaging containing any meat other than what it says on the label is scandalous. There"s my opposite position!
