Sir Stirling Moss is recovering in hospital after falling down a lift shaft at home and breaking both ankles. The Formula One racing legend, 80, fell three floors when his lift opened in error on Saturday. Paramedics were called to his home in Mayfair and he underwent surgery at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

He also broke four bones in a foot, chipped four vertebrae and suffered skin damage, the website said. His family said he was recovering well. "He remained conscious throughout. With the assistance of Professor Sid Watkins he was moved on Sunday to a hospital closer to his home where he underwent surgery on both his ankles, which were plated and pinned.

"The door to the lift, that should have remained locked if the lift was not on the floor that it was called from, opened in error.

"He stepped into the narrow open shaft in the expectation that the lift would be present for him to walk into, as it should have been."

I had to do some work from home on Saturday and into Sunday morning. We had a major network upgrade and I had to test all the connectivity stuff. Not difficult, just time consuming. I didn't finish until 5.30am.

I woke up around 11am and felt a little groggy, pulled myself out of bed and put on my glasses. The view of the world was still a little hazy as I went down to the kitchen to get a cold can of coke from the fridge. A couple of gulps of that and the dryness was gone from the throat, however the view of the world was still a little out of focus.

I must still be tired and my eyes had yet to adjust to the new day. I fired up the computer and had some difficulty focusing on the screen. Never mind, it will become clear when I wake up properly.

It was really tough to make out the content on the screen so I thought I had better clean the lenses. Right hand side first, with the glasses cloth, got a goodly wipe. Left hand side to go and my fingers touched.

FML the lens was missing. Now have you ever had to search for something to do with your glasses without said glasses being at their optimum operating power.

I eventually found it upstairs and lens repositioned the view of the world was back to normal.

One of my biggest fears is losing my glasses or them being broken, I only own one pair!  Thankfully I have had these a couple of years without incident and last saturday ordered new ones as well as prescription sunglasses for backup!  I am so blind without them, I am severely short sighted.

A mate of mine had this done last year & was so happy with the result! Not sure that it works for every vission problem though?

heading for DTD at the weekend for the super 50, Carl has qualified (did he mention it   ). I have tried a couple of times and am now going to attempt the 5euro 10 seats gtd tonight.

sigh the way I am running I should save my euros and buy in direct anyway
