CARL PILGRIM

There are few players at APAT with a bigger personality than Carl Pilgrim and nobody with a bigger heart.  Carl recorded his first cash at the season 4 WCOAP, with a 6th place finish in the Omaha Championship.  He has scored cashes in every season since.  Season 6 saw Carl rewrite the APAT record books with back to back victories at the UK and European Amateur Championships, topped off with a WCOAP Bracelet winning performance as a member of the English team who won the World Amateur Team Championship.  Carl would finish that season on top of the live event rankings. Medal finishes at the season 7 WCOAP Antes Only Championship and season 8 WCOAP Shootout cemented Carl"s position in our top 10 players of all time.  We would also note that with over £14,000 in prize money, Carl is the highest earner in APAT history.

PAUL MCGUINNESS

Paul established his name on the APAT tour with low scoring cashes in the Scottish, Irish and English Amateur Championships through seasons 2 & 3.  But he came to prominence in season 4, with 4 cashes, the highlight being his captaincy of the victorious Welsh team at the World Amateur Team Championship.  McGuinness also final tabled the WCOAP Horse Championship and Welsh Amateur Championship in the same season to finish the season ranked in APAT's top 5 live players.  Better was to follow in season 5 when the Welsh team regained their World Amateur title under Paul"s captaincy.  The proud Welshman went 3 better in the WCOAP Horse Championship also, securing Gold and his second WCOAP title in two days.  In season 6 he finished runner up at the English Amateur Championship and followed that up with a third WCOAP Horse final table in season 8.

TOD WOOD

2 1 6 5 2.  If you want to get to the top of the APAT rankings quickly, then you need to follow the Tod Wood formula. The Black Country player has "only" cashed 5 times, but yet he sits squarely in the top 10 players of all time, at #8. The formula?  Finish 2nd, 1st, 6th, 5th and 2nd in events with an average field size of 215 players.  Well, we didn"t say it would be easy!?!  Tod took Gold in the season 4 English Amateur Championship to follow his Silver at the previous season"s UK Amateur Championship.  He went on to outlast 447 players at the season 6 WCOAP main event for the Silver medal and a high cash of £5,900.  He is widely liked and respected across APAT for his deep runs and he has been a popular pick by team captains for many seasons now.

DON ROBERTS

Don Roberts may not be able to walk on water, but the likeable Londoner has achieved plenty else since opening his ranking account on the APAT tour in season 2.  His 9 cashes demonstrate a high level of consistency, while 7 final tables and 5 medals demonstrate powerful play at the business end of a tournament.  Don has runner up finishes at the Aberdeen leg of the APAT Pro League in season 3, UK Amateur Championship in season 4 and WCOAP Stud Championship in season 8, but it was his WCOAP Horse Championship victory in season 8 that brought wide celebration amongst the APAT community.  One of the very good guys of poker had got there in the end, his grin wide, his socks dry.

JAMES EDWARDS

James Edwards is one of the "nearly" men of APAT poker.  To achieve the #6 ranking of all time, while having to deal with "nearly" is some achievement.  And James Edwards is some guy.  Without question one of the most sporting competitors in our member base, and this in an organisation which prides itself - insists even - on sporting behaviour.  So why "nearly"?  We have to go back to season 2 and James" first cash.  He outlasted a field of over 200 runners to finish 4th in the first ever WCOAP main event.  Nearly a medal.  He finished 4th in his next event, at the Welsh Amateur Championship of season 3.  Nearly a medal.  He finished 4th in the season 4 English Amateur Championship.  Nearly a medal.  Further cashes would follow at the English, UK and European Amateur Championships, before he final tabled again in last season"s European Amateur Championship.  Where did he finish I hear you ask?  Need you?  4th.  Nearly.  Sandwiched amongst all of those results, James broke though by winning the Aberdeen leg of the APAT Pro League in season 4, for Gold!  His mistake clear to us all....those amateurs are too tough, he needs to step up and play with the pros.

WARREN JONES

When putting together this analysis of APAT performance over the past 10 years it became clear that the Welsh are too good.  It"s not that there"s too many of them, but they"re clearly too sharp an the end of day one and too cool as the pressure builds late on day two.  Warren Jones personifies these qualities.  He first came to our notice with cashes in the season 4 (Bronze) and 5 WCOAP Heads Up Championships.  He followed this up with 3 cashes in season 6, including the WCOAP main event and a 4th at the Welsh Amateur Championship.  His big breakthrough however came in season 7 where he struck Gold at the Welsh and English Amateur Poker Championships.  These victories and a cash in the UKCOAP Heads Up Championship enabled him to finish that season at the top of APAT's live rankings.  Last season Warren made the final table of the English Amateur Championship once again and has represented the Welsh team on several occasions.

DARREN SHALLIS

Darren is another of those ferocious Welsh warriors.  A long term legend of APAT, Darren topped the live player rankings in season 2 and again jointly in season 4.  With 9 cashes and 7 final tables, Darren"s pedigree is clear.  We can only speculate how many points he may have scored had he been a regular player on the tour over the past few seasons.  Final tables at the Welsh and English Championships launched Darren"s APAT career in season 2, his promise confirmed with victory in the Irish Amateur Championship later that same season.  He final tabled in his defence of the Irish Championship the following season, falling to Brian Yates - while also cashing the UK Amateur Championship.  Season 4 brought final tables in the Welsh and UK Amateur Championships and a runner up finish in the European Amateur Championship.  Darren recorded his last cash in the season 7 UKCOAP Six Max Championship, finishing 5th of 172 runners.

ANDREW DUNCAN

Remarkably, Andrew Duncan is the only player in our top 10 who scored ranking points in season 1.  While a lot of players have been distracted in the interim, Andrew has consistently churned out result after result.  His 13 cashes are testament to this, a record made even more impressive through 8 final tables.  In fact, only 1 player in the history of APAT has appeared at more final tables.  Andrew"s greatest performance perhaps, was as a member of the winning APAT team, who secured the UK Team Championship title in season 3.  He has been close to securing an individual title on several occasions, most notably the WCOAP Stud Championship in season 5 and the Irish Amateur Championship in season 7, finishing 4th on both occasions.  Andrew"s achievement in being the #3 APAT ranked player of all time suggests that its just a matter of "when" and not "if", for that elusive first individual title.  In the meantime, he"ll continue to hoover up cashes with frightening consistency.

JOHN MURRAY

Many would consider John Murray the greatest player in the history of APAT, an opinion hard to argue given the scale of the Irishman"s record.  The most cashes with 17.  The most final tables with 9.  The most medals, held jointly with 7.  The most wins with 5.  It really is a sensational record and one that saw him become the highest ranked APAT player of all time, overtaking Darren Shallis during season 7.  A position that he held up to October of this year.  John"s story is complex however.  He has been famously successful in team events.  5 of his 17 cashes have been in team events.  He"s been part of the winning team in 4 of those events - 3 of those for Ireland in international events.  This is no coincidence of course, John"s a tremendous player and a clever contributor to team games.  His success rate is phenomenal.  Due to their nature, these events don"t receive the same number of ranking points (3 max) as side events (9 max) and main events (18 max) so while one could argue that he"s lost some side event scoring opportunities, others could argue that he has scored a lot of incremental points in team events.  His individual record is fantastic also.  9 final tables, the highlight being his title winning performance at the UK Amateur Championship in season 4.  Although going close on a couple of occasions, John hasn"t been able to medal 8 of those final tables, which inevitably has allowed the competition to overtake him recently.  There seems little doubt that John will want to recapture the #1 position and his place atop the APAT pile, which should lead to some very exciting poker in the coming months.

STEVE RODERICK

So there we have it, Steve Roderick has secured more ranking points than any other player in APAT history.  This very personable Welshman with the studious approach and a driven, almost mechanical achievement of results. Part man, part machine.  More Riddick than Roderick. Including this season, Steve has now scored points in each of the past 6 seasons.  Starting in season 4, he took Silver from 425 players at the WCOAP main event.  He finished 12th at the Scottish Amateur Championship and had another runner up finish in Ireland.  Those results were good enough for a share of the #1 season ranking with Darren Shallis.  Season 4 brought a Bronze medal in the North American Championship.  Steve added a Bronze medal in the Scottish Amateur Championship in season 6, and he followed that with a final table at the season 7 English Amateur Championship.  Season 8 brought a Silver medal at the WCOAP PLO Championship and a cash at the European Amateur Championship.  Season 9 brought a 4th place finish at the Welsh Amateur Championship and a 10th place finish at the European Amateur Championship.  A result that was significant enough to see Steve leapfrog John Murray into the all time #1 position.  This position will put a new pressure on Steve Roderick and how he deals with that will be very interesting to see.  But there can be no doubt in one area - he is now the #1 ranked APAT player of all time.  We salute his achievement and are proud to call him our precious.

Great work Des, as a relative newbie to APAT, it"s nice to see what I will be up against in future events.

Well done to Rodders, but I do wonder if these are all correct as I heard he has a doppelganger  ;D

Have to say... I was watching the countdown thinking anyone who doesnt play side events has no chance.

Huge respect to John (who I thought would win) but I am totally loving that Rodders has won. I recall folding to him once.... I think...maybe :)

"Final tables for fun" I believe is his hashtag. Congrats Steve xxx

Awesome stats which must have took many hours. Interesting reading and many thanks to all who put the time into it xxx

Congrats to Rodders.

Well deserved for his numerous podium finishes and, not least, his consecutive high finishes this season.

Well done to Des too for a major piece of work.
