Sick Call
« on: May 17, 2009, 19:23:57 PM »
A hand from a recent tourney/ thinly veiled beat story.
I haven"t been playing online MTT"s for almost 2 years now, SNG"s suit my free time a little better, however, I can"t believe that this is the standard way some players play!

There"s a limp UTG and I raise to 450 in MP, one caller and short stacked SB shoves, the limper calls and although I am compelled to fold here (I probably shouldn"t even be in the hand anyway), I"m getting around 5:1 on a call and can hope for a favourable flop. I probably could have gone over the top and put my whole stack in to isolate, but I figured having almost 3k back if I miss the flop, and being up against an UTG limper that a call is acceptable. The LP caller joins in.

When the flop comes J high with two baby clubs and UTG checks to me I"m sure I have the best hand, I"m not really worried about baby sets or the wheel draw so I shove and all I"m really hoping is that the short stack hadn"t found AA-QQ in the SB.

The one guy folds and when the UTG limper calls my first reaction is that he must have had a monster, after all the AA/KK UTG limp is a bit of a common move, so when he shows KTh I"m thinking wtf??

Of course the K shows up on the turn and ruins my day but I think this is probably the craziest call I"ve seen since play money days on Willy Hill 3 years ago.

Can anyone come up with a feasable explanation for the call? Maybe he"s got me on a pair 66-99 and thinks for 7.5k in the middle his overcards a worth the speculation? I honestly can"t figure it out!

Raise smaller p/f - make it 300, and then when he shoves u either fold, or shove in and isolate if u think u have the best of it.  As played - fist pump tht u got called by trash and smile when u rake the pot the majority of the time!

disagree about raising smaller pre, theres a limper in so if hes gonna raise hes going to make it bigger than if he was first in the pot

I like the raise size too, for the reason chris gave. However, I"d be reluctant to play a big pot with AJo so would probably limp along (especially if the players to act had a strong propensity to limp call raises light). AJo isn"t that strong at this stage of the tourney.

as someone else put, you were miles ahead when the money went in so be happy with the call.

If there was no luck in poker these donks wouldn"t come back

didnt see the limper - sry - then yea perfect raise size...and cnt fold to the shove so I think I 3bet isolate.  As played its perfect.

Also agree with marty that a decent percentage of the time im shoving after the short stack pushes to iso but that depends on PT stats and how theyve played previous pots when theyve limped
