Favourite game other than holdem?
« on: September 12, 2008, 15:43:00 PM »
What is everybodys favourite variant of poker other than holdem? Has anybody played any of the new 8 game on stars?

Razz, particularly on the cash tables. So many people don"t understand the game, and will continue to call when obviously drawing dead - easy money.

Also love playing HORSE tourneys - just wish I could cash a little more often!

As AMRN says, HORSE is a great game.

Love 5 card draw too.

Playing the WCOOP HORSE event on Saturday but not banking on a cash.

Horse is more of a mixture of games rather than a game in itself!!! and i am not knocking it at all - as i would say that is one of my favourite games - although i am not a fan of the Hi-Low Games!

I seem to find myself drawn more and more to stud games theses days - Razz and Stud Hi - i would say other than Holdem - but i do like a bit of Omaha too ;D.

You could say that i am a bit of a Sl*g as i"ll play anything :P!

Omaha & Razz - although not fully got into the swing of Razz yet so could very well be one of the players contributing to AMRN"s bankroll :D

my best in terms of results is razz, but in terms of enjoyment it is 2-7 triple draw (ask mal666 how good I am at it)

Don"t really play anything but hold "em at the moment, as I"m still yet to hit my first year as a poker player, and would rather get loads of hands under my belt (!) before branching out.  Ultimate aim is HORSE.

I"ve been thinking of learning Razz, though, and it seems quite popular in this thread - I know PLO seems to be everybody"s second fave game, but the idea of wild swings in my bankroll would drive me nuts.  I"ve played some 5 card stud and enjoyed it, but it seems a bit one-dimensional, compared to hold "em.  For somebody who can do odds and outs, is Razz a way to go?

I"d have to say Stud High. It takes a bit more patience than most other games and you really have to be paying attention, but there are a lot of people who chase draws when the cards they are after have been exposed/discarded. For this reason alone, I"ve found it to be very productive over the last two or three months.

I wouldn"t invest too much into HORSE tourneys until you have are reasonably adept at each discipline.

Both 7 card Stud (Hi only) and Razz are good safe games to start branching out with. Odds and outs are important in all forms of limit poker, but with stud games you have the obvious advantage that you can improve your knowledge of the odds and outs as you can see so many cards face up. You"ll find that a lot of players simply don"t pay attention to the upcards and chase draws for which they aren"t getting the correct pot odds. Therefore, so long as you are patient and play correctly, Stud Hi and Razz are reasonably easy to turn a profit at the low/med stakes cash tables.

Razz is easier than stud because you don"t need to worry about the suits.

My favourite poker variant is PLO, but the variance can be a killer.

ignore everything from this point on

For example today I was playing on a short handed table and full table simultaneously.

Almost at the same time I flopped the nuts on both tables - bet the pot on the flop and the turn (after some pretty hefty pre flop betting) - and on both tables both boards paired on the river to give the opponent with trips a full house. should have pretty much doubled my stack on both tables but instead had to reload on both.

I did tell you to ignore it
