APAT Season 2 - National Amateur Championships
« on: August 11, 2007, 18:15:38 PM »
National Amateur Championships

* World Championship of Amatuer Poker - Is the Vic really the best place for a 4 or 5 day series of events? Whilst I accept that the Vic is historically the mecca of poker in the UK, the cost of travel and accomodation will mean that very few will be able to play all (or even more than one) of the events. Is it actually the best poker room in the Grovesnor estate? I have not been there myself so this is genuinely a question for others to discuss.

* APAT Forum Challenge - Will this be an Amateur event or open to professional members also? Size of team? Could a forum enter more than one team?

* APAT International Team Challenge - How about a "Rest of the World" Team?

* APAT Masters - This time I think the buy-in is too high for the majority of amateur players.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

- I like playing at the Vic, cost will be a problem but personally I expect that I will have to treat it as an extra special "treat", or finance it from a satellite.

- good questions, I"d like to know

- that"s a good idea as well

- I think you"re right but I expect it has to be high enough to attract some pros to take part, for example I personally won"t consider buying straight in but it will work well if (unlike the main championships) it had a high level of satellite entries. I wouldn"t want the main championships to have many seats available by satellite but for this higher price I think it warrants it.

london is a hugely expensive venue for such an event where i have paid upto £200 a night for a bed local to the casino
also with the event taking place over a number of consective days surely this isnt the best solotion for amateurs that have to work time off is normally spent on a family holiday not a week in central london playing poker

its ok for single men like myself but surely i am not the target market for the APAt

I didn"t think all that much of the Vic, although there seems to be some refurbishment going on behind screens when I visited...

Didn"t seem v big either...

Lots and Lots of cash games though :-)

I can asure you that the best cardroom in the country is now the new G Casino Grosvenor at Blackpool. It has 200 regular seats with lots of comfortable space and could probably push to 250-300 for the right event.
Unlimited cheap accomodation, easy access for the whole country inc. Ireland and plenty of other activities on offer too.

I guess DTD might well surpass this , but at the moment Blackpool is without doubt the best on offer.

I have to agree with all that. It is in the centre of the country, fantastic casino, and when you go out there is so much to do.......

For anyone that wants to play all of the events (who doesn"t live in/close to London), Blackpool just has to be a better option.

Im pretty sure when i went down for a poker comp in london the hotel prices were a hell of a lot cheaper than what ive spent in newcastle (but i went a little stupid with the room selction as i took the missus!) and birmingham due to the sheer number of them meaning more competion over prices.
Ive always wanted to check out the Vic and to be honest i just love london aswell!
As for the actual comp, I have to be honest i havent even looked at the full list of season 2 prospects so dont know what the buy in is for this or what it actually is at all lol but will read up now and get back with some feedback.

Well, I do want to play all the events (at least as many as I can) and I do live in/close to London..so, Blackpool isn"t a better option for me.

Wherever they site this it"s gonna be a trek for somebody. Let"s not forget that Rank/Grosvenor will have had a BIG say in where they want to hold things.

I understand, "that Rank/Grosvenor will have had a BIG say in where they want to hold things." However, that doesn"t make it the best for choice for the APAT membership.

I live close enough to London that I can travel for any of the events that I want to play / manage to get to a seat in... in all of my comments on the proposals for season 2 I have tried to be unbiased and not purely thinking of myself.

Nope, its the APAT tour and APAT decides which specific venues we hold our tournaments at.  Blackpool and the Vic are both exceptional Grosvenor venues, and please bear in mind that the Vic will be able to cater for over two hundred players in a single sitting.

An important consideration is that this festival will be run in the month of APAT's second birthday and I felt the capital was due its first event.  There will also be a number of runners from overseas and part of the attraction will be having a few days in London to see the sights.

There is also a huge amount of accomodation choice within an easy walk / bus / tube ride of the venue and APAT will look to do some deals with hotels closer to the events.

Des,

Apologies if you"ve already answered this elsewhere, but will all the dates for the National events be published at, or near, the start of season two ?

Thanks.

At the start of Season Two APAT will publish our tournament schedule showing the months that each event will fall into and their venues.

It is our intention to announce the specific details for two events at a time, so that players will always have the visibility of the "next event, and the one after that".

In addition I can tell you that it is our intention to hold the next European Amateur Championship outside of the UK during Easter 2008 and the World Amateur Championship Festival during the August Bank Holiday weekend 2008.
