i cant beat a donk even if i can pick cards out of the deck after the flop. im a bit annoyed with the pub league i play as most players cant lay a ace down preflop, will call you on the flush draw when the pot odds outweigh the maths and outs, and have a real knack of hitting 2 outers on the river. i know poker is a marathon but after a year i would have liked to win a trophy but just cant win the league overall. can i improve how i play as i cant wait for monster hands as blinds are fast and starting stack is short.

please help

it"s a tough situation to be in, and I have the same problem when i play my league on Thursdays.

You need to adjust your play to these guys, and what you are identifying here is you have a great idea as to what hands they have or at least the range.

In my place two guys fave hand is J7, why, because they "always" hit and "never" lose. Of course they do lose and quite a lot, i know this, but I also know that if I see a J7 flop i need to be wary.

If you know they are chasing aces etc. you need to play small ball until you know you have the nuts and then hit them for all their chips, more often than not they will call you down because they can"t fold.

One guy I also play with keeps telling everyone about his great folds etc as well, funnily enough he never wins.

These are also the same people who call you a donkey for calling someones all in with 86 suited in the BB when it is 1000 to call with the blinds 400/800. I know I am likely to be behind but more often that not I am 60/40 and in this case i was 54/44!

I am either 1st or 2nd in my league (just waiting for the table to come out) out of about 20-30 players and I won on Thursday, all I did was play my cards and made them pay a lot when they were behind, it took a lot of getting used to but I seem to have got their.

I have also identified the stronger players and know when to steer clear of them, I try to until the final table usually. And sometimes, yes they get lucky, but I make sure the majority of times I am in ahead or a 60/40 dog. You just have to take the risk with the best knowledge you have.

Hope that helps a bit.

If you are getting your money in good - keep playing that way.

How do the other"s in the pub league view your current style of play?

Play it as fast as you can betting, raising, rerasing, overbet everything, shove light into the limpers. Stick it in their fkg eye basically.

Depending on what the starting stack is I prob do the opposite of this.  If we start w/ a decent stack, then Im gng to try and play a lot of small pots in position.  When the blinds get high, Im gng to open up a little, but I dnt want to be taking marginal hands into swollen multi-way pots.

I think, play tight and try to accumulate with ur good hands.  100% dependant on overall structure tho!

I have found in this type of event it is very difficult to make people lay down their hands,,they are not usually good enough to know they should be folding,,,although this can benefit you against one player,,,if u raise with say AA and get four callers, your aces are no longer favourite against four players.
I would try not to commit to many chips to a pot pre flop at the start,,,i would limp and hope to hit flops and then play accordingly,,,bet out if u hit a set or a straight as u will probably get callers,,as i said they will probably not be good enough to know they are way behind,,,if they want to play drawing hands make them pay,,if they get lucky that is probably bad play by them,,,,,open up later on when blinds are bigger and play as u would do normally.
If it was a really really fast tourney with a very very small startin stack i think u have no choice but to play very aggressively and take your chance when u have a premium startin hand or good position. The nature of this type of tournament is luck orientated or as some call it "bingo",,,,you win some u lose some lolol,,,,it doesnt really matter if u r a good player or not,,,,HOUSE !!!! lol  goodluck

people who overplay ace rag? people who can"t lay down flush draws despite incorrect pot odds? people who can"t help calling when they"re beat?

not sure what the problem is.... surely these are the players and the plays that you want to be up against. easy money.

Its not that easy when you have 8-9 fish on your table.  One of them will get you eventually.
I have the same problems as OP with this. Play fairly regularly at one of these, and am hopeless. They have no idea of position/odds etc.  Drives me NUTS!

Depends Steve obv more EV however a very frustrating way to play poker. YOu basically can make no plays at a pot cos your gonna get called light. Against 9 other players as Darren says it can be quite difficult to negoitiate

at least with a table of Sharks, you should have some idea what cards they have.  With Fish, they can have any 2

to be honest with you i only asked as i think the structure is crackable but the players are not, i would rather play strong opponents as i can read what they are up to rather than a weak player who calls your flop, turn and river bet with pocket deuces when there is a four flush and poss straight and i was representing it. the structure is fast(blinds go up every 10 minutes) and the starting stack it 2k, after the third level the blinds are 150-300 so if you have not found a good spot you are in hot water in 30 minutes.
