If this competiton is all about promoting APAT amongst the major Poker Forums etc..., why are we having a debate, APAT should just invite the largest forums to take part, which will generate the most exposure and be done with it.

This is fine, as it"s APAT's party but maybe it should be renamed the APAT Team Championship rather than the UK Team Championship, as not all teams will be able to take part that would like too.

Another option maybe would be to have some regional team championships but I guess the work involved would be too much to run additional events on top of the current excellent schedule of events that we have.

:D Easy now  - there aren"t even 10 "major" forums, so I don"t think there"s any reason to lose perspective on the issue.

Not trying to lose perspective here just picking up on some of the APAT points from earlier about the major forums.

i.e. "This event does differ from the others on our schedule as one of its key objectives is to create a bit of excitement around APAT amongst the UK poker communities.

For that reason I would always envisage the major forums having a place, in addition to those who have a strong APAT member base.  APAT too, should always have a place. "

If this is the aim of this event, would it not make more sense to have it as an invitational team event, rather than one where everyone chucks their hat in the ring and then the smaller forums miss out?

I think the concept of a team event is a great idea but I guess there are too many teams to keep everyone happy and the event is always likely to be over subscribed.

Maybe one year we could have an event with teams entered from various Poker Magazines / Poker Sites and have a series of online events to qualify for these teams, which would give everyone a crack at playing in the event.

Don"t get me wrong Jon, I"m not having a pop at APAT or anyone else, honest!!!!!  ;D

It already is an invitational event - because there is no qualification.

But my point is that well over half the entries won"t be "major" - so talking about the smaller forums missing out (I think) is technically incorrect. Some (or even lots depending on the demand) of smaller forums could miss out - but not all of them, and not every year.

From the OP:

The APAT UK Team Championship; the final event of Season Three, will be held at the G Casino in Manchester on January 23rd & 24th, 2010.

Following on from the very successful Team Championship last year which was won by the Bristol & South West Meetup, this event will again feature teams of 10 players, with 50% of the prize pool plus a GUKPT Seat and National Medals going towards individual prizes, while the other 50% of the prize pool, plus the title and Championship Cup will be going towards the Team Championship.

Also on the original season fixture announcement it merely says UK Amatuer team championship, no mention of forums.

There was no mention in the original brief that teams had to have a forum in place, interested as to why this now seems to be assumed to be the case?

In my honest opinon (and biased) surely the teams who supported the event last year should get priority first????

Anyways, as a side idea, maybe remove the invitational and run some kind of online qualifier, with the top 16 teams progressing to the live finals??? I think that is a much fairer way than the selection process seems to be at the moment.

Just my opinion.

Because that was the case last year which most of us knew. I guess Des could have cut and pasted the whole thread from last year (which has similar controversy IIRC) but I assume that he assumed that everyone was in the know.

Hi Geo,

This year"s event is going to run largely as per last year; which had the same name, so there was no need to be any more specific a year ago when we launched S3.  Now, the format may well change in S4 and if it does, we will be very clear about that at the start of the season.

Cheers,

Des.

Thanks Des,

as we all know APAT has grown considerably and there are many that may not be part of a forum, or are but with little chance of participating, potentially due to their newness to their respective forum but would be able to put a team together.

These were the ones I was thinking of tbh.

It would not be fair to exclude an entire community due to the actions of one of their members, so in my opinion John"s post above is not valid.

As with a high percentage of posts on this forum, the debate here has been largely varied and fair. This event does differ from the others on our schedule as one of its key objectives is to create a bit of excitement around APAT amongst the UK poker communities.

For that reason I would always envisage the major forums having a place, in addition to those who have a strong APAT member base.  APAT too, should always have a place.  Inevitably some forums who wish to participate may be disappointed.

That said, I will look at each of the forums over the weekend to see what level of interest this Championship has created and we will finalise the team selection on Sunday.

Des, as you know I run a live poker community, not a forum.

Will officepoker.net therefore be excluded? (since you can"t view a forum to gauge level of interest).

Thanks,
Neil.

Hi Neil,

As you run a poker community this includes you.  By necessity, the rules around this one have needed to be a little grey.  I know that may be difficult for some (not you I hasten to add), but APAT mostly give, and sometimes there has to be a little give and take.

Cheers,

Des.

Thanks Geo, I know where you"re coming from on this.

I suspect APAT will allocate spots to the larger and very APAT supportive forums over the weekend and then put all other applicants into a hat to draw for the remaining spots.  This is about as fair as we can be under the circumstances.   I think it is also fair to assume that we will move to 20 teams of 8 players to allow an additional 4 teams to participate; albeit this may be a blow to last year"s Champions Bristol & South West meetup.

It should just be held in vegas next year.

You could let the major forums have full 8 or 10 seat places and let smaller forums band together as temporary alliance teams :D
