Tonight's live game. (Hand One)
« on: January 29, 2010, 22:03:41 PM »
Hi,
Two hands from a live game i played this evening to ask about.

Hand One:

Blinds 300/600.
I"m in small blind with about 8500.  BB has about 13000.  UTG +1 is short stack, about 3000 after just getting Aces cracked.  He"s still steaming a bit about it, but other than that, he"s a pretty solid player.

Pre-Flop -

UTG+1 (Small stack) Calls.  I look down at  qh th, and decide to flat call.  Big blind checks.

Flop -
jh :3c: 7h
I decide to try a probe bet of 1/3rd of pot (600) (A move straight out of Harrington! See, i"m learning!)
BB Folds.
UTG+1 Pushes for his remaining 2400.

Question.  Do i call?
The all-in play works everytime but once.

yes you have to call here.  played horribly all round though - UTG+1 has limped whilst holding only 5 BBs.... probably has big pair.

With his limp, your completion, and the BB, there is 1800 in the pot. Your opener on the flop makes the pot 2400....  he shoves for his last 2400 and you need 1800 more to call. So that"s 1800 to win a pot of 4800 = 2.6/1 - you only need 2/1 to call here with your flush draw.

Your probe bet priced you in. Would only be worried if bb re raised you

After mulling it over, i did call, he had J/Q and a  9h turned! Double up.  I figured out, through my clouded poker mind that i was getting about 3-to-1 for the call.  Flush draw + Overcard worked for me!

you only need 2-1 for a call here.

If only all poker problems were this easy............

By the way, your probe bet was a bit to small here. you should of looked at opponents stack and then poted it, makes it much easier for you when he does decide to shove.

My only question here is - did you not think the limp with only 3k stack was at all suspicious?

bet-folding this hand would be a huge mistake - probe bets are pretty tez generally
Looking forward to making my first day 2
