hand 77 from 'winning poker tourneys one hand at a time'
« on: February 04, 2010, 13:28:53 PM »
Another interesting hand. Worth discussing...

SB 4625
BB 4400
seat 3 5335
seat 4 6550
seat 5 12240
seat 6 4154
rizen   17870
seat 8 6475

Blinds 80-160. A 150 buck 55k guaranteed freezeout. No reads on anyone.

Rizen KJo. Seat 5 limps. Rizen raises to 720 (all other players fold).

Flop Ah Kd 7h. (pot 1680) Seat 5 checks. Rizen bets 1150. Seat 5 reraises to 2300. Rizen calls

Turn 9c (pot 6280) Seat 5 bets 3500. What should Rizen do? I will post what he actually does after some responses...

After the flop, my alarm bells would be ringing after the check / min-reraise.

Usually means a set of 7s from a average opponent, hoping that you have AK.

fold.

He may have nothing but with stack size as it is it"s easy to get away from.
Most likely has 77 or Ax.

I"m tempted to minraise then fold at any further action. Kinky huh?

If you call, villain shoves the river and wins, simple as that.

But all the above is predicated on me misreading Rizen"s hand as K7. Why hasn"t he folded already?

Kinky!! More like sheer S&M poker.

I dont get this!!

If you min raise you have put in 10K and then oppo shoves meaning its another 2.2K to call in a 22K pot. Surely you wouldn"t fold there. (If you were joking - well done, you got me in a weak moment)

given the "no reads on anyone" the buyin (no sats to this tourney I think), and the fact that oppo has put in half his stack already you have to give this one up. There is a chance you are being bluffed but I think you can preserve a decent stack by folding here.

With a good read, you could maybe shove here profitably, but I"d need a super read for that. Given that both players are well stacked, neither would want to call off his tourney with a marginal holding. Seat 5 would have a 3 to 1 call for his whole tourney and even though he is pot committed would still have 40BBs left which still leaves plenty of room for manoeuvre. He can only realistically call with 77 and should fold Ax holdings (maybe 2 pair ones too). Have to say I would need to grow a bigger pair to do this so would still fold, even with a super read :D

raise smaller pre - check back flop without specific read.

mash call to win it all from here, unless a heart drops on the river?
Looking forward to making my first day 2

rizen"s reasoning:

rizen raises preflop to isolate the limper. Job done.
He actually describes this flop as very good for him. He describes how it is very rare for a player to open limp with an ace then call a large raise. The key is remember its not a clear donkament - buy in 150 bucks so players are probably going to be decentish. He also discounts small suited aces for the same reasons.

He describes the check min raise on the flop as "quite odd". Its going to be 77 or a combo draw alot. i.e. J10s or QJs. He calls with a plan for the turn...

If he has 77 he"s likely to bet biggish on the turn to protect against a draw. If he"s on a draw he"s likely to make a small turn bet to control his pot odds or check hoping for a free card.
So he decides a 9c is a benign card that doesn"t complete a draw (any heart/q/j/10) and coupling this with a smallish turn bet (1/2 pot) goes with his read and shoves. Villain folds. He also states that even in the small chance of someone having a small ace they will often fold under the pressure of elimination.
