APAT is an excellent concept. Why do you advocate keeping it UK only?

why do you think it would be good to reserve all that is good about APAT for the UK only?

Any other views of mine you want to imagine, cos you imagined both of those. Talk about putting words in someone"s mouth - I"ll get Adam "Don"t tell me what I think" Boulton to sort you out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The way i read this, i think AMRN was referring to his own response to one of your questions, with a question, waiting for an answer :P

On the subject of the APAT going abroad it was always going to be a costly venture, the same way we dont have loads of European based players flying to Swansea, Coventry etc for "our" home events. Theres probably many players across Europe bemoaning this very matter with regards to going to England to play in these events. It would be very ignorant of APAT to ignore those players and not branch out their own profile, congrats to them for succeeding in this, based on the Vienna turnout.
However, imo what is a let down is that we probably (could be wrong) wont see these winners and FT"ers again at an APAT event and also, is the GUKPT seat going to be a waste for the winners in the seasons Euro events if won by a non UK resident.

Away from the anti globalization of APAT, one thing to try to do in future (as mentioned already) is to offer up packages for satellite winners for future euro events. On a side note however, wouldnt we have to offer the same for our European counterparts for UK based events???
You just cant please everyone all of the time :(

It is something I thought of, and think would be fab if the sat packages were bigger to incorporate all expenses involved in the tournaments, and it works for both UK and european players.  If it is possible, who knows, but would be a wonderful thing to be able to play a sat to gain the seat and expenses for travelling/accommodation

...

Live Streaming: The live streaming is a good addition but I disagree with people that seem to be hinting to focus on one or the other. On Day 1, Nutz TV tend to focus on one table and there are 19 other tables that would be missed if we focused on streaming rather than text based updates. The text updates are definitely still needed.

...

I think that goes to the crux of the problem, there are 19 other tables and they have largely been overlooked because the text updates are being overlooked. There are occasional chip count updates, but the interactivity is gone so the threads are very dry and bare - and because of this even the factual updates of how the tournament is progressing are much more infrequent than before.

People who can watch the live stream as a long TV show can more or less keep up with what"s going on, but anybody who just either happens to come across the site whilst a tournament is being played or is doing other things and wants to dip in now and again to keep up with it isn"t really going to have much luck.

Glasgow. No event venue wanted us

Edinburgh. The Gala Maybury was extremely poor last year

Scotland is THE trickiest place to arrange.

I agree Glasgow and Edinburgh would be better for most, all other things being equal

Really? Did anyone speak to the Stanley Circus in Edinburgh?

Nicest cardroom in the central belt and could cope with up to 180, prob 200 at a push. (I did mention this to Des last year).

Really Tighty? What kind of business development plan includes turning away 170 beer guzzling poker players from a casino? Surely the margin on Gers pints alone would pay for the dealers.

Just got onto the forum and have been reading through this, a fair debate, but a strange one, a bit like some poker styles that some of us have seen over the weekend.

For one, I have probably just been to my best APAT event. Socially it was superb, 8 of us drinking and playing poker and having a good laugh.  Not just a brief chat, bit a few hours chatting together, railing and checking on each other through the tournaments on both days, and a few pints.

The venue was superb and the Casino staff were excellent. One drawback for some would have been the smoking, but I smoke, after all this time in the UK though it didn"t seem right, but it was less hands to miss for me.

So for this debate:

This was a great tournament that introduced a new level of Poker to another part of Europe.  The number of comments made about the great structure, I think Christoph the winner also commented on this in his post, was staggering.  Gerhard who came second was of the same opinion, this only promotes APAT in a positive light and for me is showing what it is all about, taking low cost Poker to the masses and providing an opportunity for people to experience what a Deepstack tournament is all about.

It doesn"t matter where the tournaments are being played, what country they are in, who"s able to take part, who isn"t, they are no different than any of the other APAT tournaments.  They are an APAT tournament and that"s the bit that matters in my opinion and it"s also something that we should all support and be proud of.

and for the record, this one cost me no more than Swansea when I add up hotels, petrol, drinking and food.

22 for the win ;D

I will give you my thoughts as others are...

For Europe, I personally totted up the cost of playing a £75 tournament, add flights and hotel etc etc etc...  Travelling to UK APAT events, in my world, normally has 2, 3 or 4 of us at some point sharing a car and sharing the fuel costs, and to be honest, this year has been very low in that some nice company is footing these bills for us in a company car, so very low.  So comparing the cost of UK travel to an event, compared to EU travel to an event, is a big difference, and as explained, the cost of travel added to the hotels m priced it out of my choices to play.  *IF* there were any events in Northern France, then I am sure a drive to the event would be a high possibility for myself and lots more other UK regulars..  It did not mean I was not interested because my Buddy and next door neighbour, The Duke, was playing, and also another local(ish) friend, Cyntaf, but once those 2 had gone out, I sort of really just checked in at the end to see how things went.

For Aberdeen, I have already satt"d into this event so getting in cheap, but, some players who are going are definately flying.  That is fine, and the cheapo flights are great, but, the one thing I am aware of and I dont like, is if you go there by car, is, you have the flexibility to go home if you want.  I did this after the Vic tournament.  The Sunday side game had no appeal to me (HORSE) so decided to give it a miss and make the drive home.  You cant do that with a flight, you MUST book to come home Monday because the cheapo airlines do not really do flxible tickes like normal airlines do.

For the video streaming.  I like the idea of this.  For the very first event on day 2, I was even a big part of the proceedings.  I was having fun, my family were having fun, the word got around and loads of people were wishing me well by txt msg..   It was all good...  but...  and its not a big, but... I came home having spend all of day 2 on the feature table, and lots of fun to be had, and lots of stories from friends and relatives, congrats etc...  I did not see one little bit of it.  I came home and there is nothing that I can see back.  I have nothing to show those that never knew anything was happening.  I have no history of the day.  I realise that there is a cost associated with the whole video feature and recording 2 days of poker, but, can"t the interviews be recorded?  Even if it was recorded locally at the camera instead of across streaming recording, and then uploaded after the event.

Also, something that has been mentioned, certainly in the first event of the year in Swansea, i got home and wanted to see comments and I know people post congrats etc etc, and also see 2 days worth of the usual excellent quality updates, and it was really eveident that the live text updates had come 2nd place to the video and audio updates, and, I know why, I was there while it was happening, there was this new technology being worked and the updaters were a big part of that.

As Rich has explained, the costs of shipping 2 video guys, and an interviewer over to EU, hotels, flights, cargo etc etc, is prohibitive right now, and we cant argue with that, maybe one day in the future they will have more sponsorship money that can cope with that cost too.  As I said, I definatly like it.  Made my final table experiece as an amateur player just seem that more important.

They buy-in level is perfect for me, I hope it does not go up.

Cheers
Carl.

In response to Shogun. I agree with the whole video thing. I mean we are amatures and it"s a great experience at apat events with the live broadcasts and interviews. For most of us it"s the closest thing we are going to get to a major televised event. I know there is a cost issue involved and of course server space but it would be great to have the video interviews and the footage from the final table action. I, like Carl, have the same company sponsoring my travel costs so it makes it easier to play local events. I was a long distance truck driver in Canada so distance is fairly relative around the UK and Europe as I"m only about 15 hrs from everywhere. European tournaments sound pretty good and hopfully I"ll be able to attend a few in the comming years.

Re the cost of travel, and comparision of Euro travel compared to UK travel....  it kinda misses the point me thinks. Whilst ALL events are open to ALL APAT members, the Euro events aren"t just about a holiday for the UK APAT players.... they are primarily to spread APAT into a region that is wider than just the UK.

Finally got home last night and as one of the "Austrian 9" wanted to disagree with some of the points made on here. Firstly to echo Don"s post above, this in my view was one of the best APAT events I"ve been to. Vienna in S2 (?) was my very first APAT and as such I"ve always considered APAT as not just a UK tournament based tour. In fact I was quite disappointed that last season didnt have another European adventure after praising that trip to all that would listen up in the North East.

..One thing that always gets me is there is a gang of players who regulary travel from the North East to events, always laughing, smiling and having a good time and there are also regular players from Scotland and Ireland they never complain about locations and they have the most travelling to do.

Its mainly laughing at Stu"s beard to be fair :) But from a personal point of view I don"t want to have an APAT tournament on my doorstep. The nearest venue that I"ve ever travelled was 2 hours to DTD. I can visit Casinos in Teesside and Newcastle any day of the week, I dont want the venues to be local, APAT for me gives me the chance to go and play in places I"d never have the chance to before (some good some bad), enjoy banter with fellow APATers and experience different parts of the country and Europe that I"d never been to before.

The craic this weekend was excellent, Friday evening was an experience with Don Logan, Paulie and Ger that I won"t forget for a long time. The poker although random was enjoyable with the casino running an excellent tournament both days and the players (especially on Sunday) being one of the most chilled out set of players I"ve played with in a long long time.

Rich and Leigh did a fantastic job, can"t praise them enough, especially on day 2 with no UK players making it. Having chatted to both the winner and runner up both are up for further APAT events after just learning about APAT in the weeks upto the tournament being ran. Everywhere you looked the casino had the APAT brand and tournament promoted. Surely this cant be a bad thing. As has already been said, if the UK players are getting the same number of tournaments then I can"t see a problem. I for one will be playing the European events and missing a number of UK based ones as a consequence. I won"t be at Aberdeen, but there"s already 4 or 5 including me from Stockton going to Estonia.

From my point of view. Its all good. Just add in Vegas next season and it"ll be perfect.

Surely every APAT event seems like it"s in a foreign country to the Teesside Massiv :D

And Vegas next year......Are we thinking late March by any chance?
