The light comes on moment
« on: June 30, 2010, 08:44:36 AM »
Whats the best bit of advice you have seen , received or overheard about anything poker?

In a forum thread someone wrote ""i fail to get value from TPTK and better""

he got one really good reply imho , it said - ""The way you do this is by widening your bluffing ranges. If you are not getting paid off with your TPTK hands, then you probably aren"t bluffing enough and people know that you have to have it every time you bet all 3 streets.""

Then the replier went on to write - ""Let me ask you one thing. If you are not getting paid off with big hands, then why don"t you play every hand like you have a big hand?""

any APATers with anymore?

if the other guy has showdown value and is going to call your value bet on the river, he is just as likely to call a big overbet as often as a small value bet.

You can"t bluff a donkey...especially one who has it.

Bet-sizing is an important skill, but means nothing against fish.

It"s a waste of time trying to represent the hand that the other guy is holding

This was summed up nicely by Jack Prime in Aberdeen who said on his exit in 3rd place,

"I was representing the flush that he actually had"    ;D

i assume the OP was about cash games??

Anyway imo, it depends what your opponents know about your game. If you have been playing small pot poker recently, like checking behind good, but non nut hands in position for pot controll,( like i somtimes do) then your value bets are not going to be called as often because your opponents wont pay you off with a hand that cant beat top top. So i guess your bluffing range needs to be higher on the river for someone to look you up, and give you  + EV. Another thing i think, and maybe i am not alone, but it is good to get caught bluffing everynow and then in a session, so you can value town a calling station in another hand later on in the session. I think this is one of the big differences between cash and tourneys. And maybe in cash games you should look for plays that are going to make you more money in long term.

"Don't go broke in an unraised pot"

This reminds me to "keep the head" and exercise pot control / play small-ball poker in pots when I"ve limped / made up from a blind with poor / marginal hand.

... and this  ::)  (although I NEVER adhere to it)   :-[
