Amsterdam Masterclassics - DAY 2 - Live Update (At a glance)
« on: November 08, 2007, 13:02:47 PM »
Welcome to Day Two of the Masterclassics €5k main event.  Nearly 200 players remaining, but there will be far fewer than that by the end of the day.

This is the At A Glance thread - info only - please feel free to request/harangue on the Interactive thread, should you so desire.

Extraordinarily, no chip counts or remaining players lists are available to any of the press currently at start of play.  You"ll know when we do.

did pete linton make day 2?  good luck wishes for him and Dave Colclough.

Yes he did, with about 12k or 30 big blinds left. Should be plenty, although at the bar last night he was bemoaning the loss of a chunk of his stack - apparently he was an early big stack yesterday. Will keep you updated, if he"s near enough the rail, or will at least check in with him at breaks.

I have to say, it seems that the tournament organisers are going out of their way to make actually reporting on the tournament difficult, which is really odd, as the press room conditions are most excellent. Very strange. Very strange place.

Well, like a special morning treat, I got 10 minutes inside the rope in the Main Room (which was enforced to the second, despite there being a juicy all in going on right in the middle).  So I know a few people"s current counts:

Mike Tse -- 36,000
Pete Haslam -- 11,425
Paul Testud -- 14,500
Arnaud Mattern -- 19,300
Nick Gibson -- 40,000
Dave Colclough -- 27,000
Rolf Slotboom -- 19,000
Bruno Fitoussi -- 8,500
Keith Hawkins -- 17,000
Johan Storakers -- 30,000
Mickey Wernick -- 38,000
Alan Smurfit -- 26,000

Also, killed by the turn and resurrected by the river was shortstack Dutch poker icon Rolf "Ace" Slotboom.  My attention was attracted by a surprisingly high-pitched noise coming from his table, as it appears he"d gotten it all in with  :as: ks against  ac  qd, and the board had come  6c 9c 4c qh.... kd and he doubled through to his current stack.  "Wooo!"

_________________

Meanwhile Arnaud Mattern faced an uncomfortable situation having raised on the button to 2,500 and found mid-position limper Paul Testud moving in for 7,225 total over the top.  He thought for a while before calling with his  kh td - and faced one of the worst case scenarios:  :as: kd.  No help and one Frenchman doubles up another.

Mark Teltscher is OUT... saw him doing the slow walk out of the downstairs room, and that was definitely the final exit type walk.  JJ Hazan has popped into the press room with some stories crossing the years of the Masterclassics, and noting the Teltscher leaving, remembered that he was responsible for knocking him out in 2006...

Incidentally, there are at least four of last year"s finalists still in this tournament.

I caught an actual hand while I was leaning over the slot machines to get some aerial photos of the main pit. After a veritable bunch of preflop raising, a flop was dealt -  :2c: :3d: 4c

Carl Hostrup bets 3k, and the gentleman in a cap makes it 6k. To which Hostrup moves in; call.

Hostrup -  :as: td

Cap Man -  8c 9c

Turn -  :2d:

River -  qs

And Hostrup doubles up, leaving Mr Cap very short. Someone at the next slot machine along from me shouts to Hostrup, "You are SICK man!" There follows some kind of odd handshaking ritual that I don"t pretend to understand. Cap Man looks as irked by this as by the loss of most of his chips.

By the way it"s now our turn with the photocopy of the handwritten chip count sheets; Jen is typing them up and will post them shortly.

Meanwhile downstairs, Karl Mahrenholz, currently on about 45k, is sharing a table with Johnny Lodden. Also on their table is a gent in an extraordinary 10 Gallon hat. Karl dropped a few chips to him when he raised from the button, was called by Hat Man on the small blind, and then folded when Mr Hat bet out on the  9c ah qs flop. Mr Hat obligingly showed the  ad as Karl folded.

Squinting into the distance in the downstairs room I could see Pete Linton move in before the flop, and thus steal the blinds and I think a limp too, after some considerable dwellage around the table. Have to say he looked incredibly relieved when everyone folded.

After a short argument about how much the player in question does or does not look like Christopher Lee, the ever-helpful Benjo has informed us that the cap-wearing gent who some posts back became involved with Carl Hostrup is in fact French player Eli Marciano. Thanks, Benjo!

He does look like Chrisptopher Lee.

You know when you see a player in front of one of the TV cameras that they"re on their way home (or to the cash game).  The latest stars of the small screen (i.e. eliminatees) include Rolf Slotboom, who said, of the rail, "I shouldn"t be here."  I didn"t press him for outdraw details, just congratulated him on a good week at the Festival, having come 14th in an earlier Hold'em event and finalled the Omaha for good measure.

Also OUT are Pete Haslam, Casey Kastle and a gent on Praz"s table whose shortstacked limp/call-an-all-in combo with  7s 7h found  8h 8s in the all-in player"s hand to take him out.

Nick Gibson"s had an adventurous sounding day.  It didn"t start off well, with Jan Boubli apparently re-raising him for fun all the time and dropping his starting 50k down to 25k a moment ago.  "I was his bitch," admitted Nick.  But then a hand helped him back up, when, "I tried my hardest to bust myself."  Here"s what happened:  An under the gun raiser raised, Nick made it 5,100 with  ac ks, one caller.   The flop came Six-high, perfect, and Matey bet out 6k.  "All in," says Nick - for 20k.  A very long genuine dwell ensued, at the end of which Matey called with his  qd qc!  But an Ace on the turn got Gwibbo out of jail and he"s back in the tournament in spite of himself.
