APAT Northern European Amateur Championships: Live Update
« on: July 30, 2010, 13:14:21 PM »
Tomorrow afternoon James "jbworldwide" Barber and I will be bringing you coverage of the APAT Northern European Amateur Poker Championships from the extremely pleasant Olympic Casino here in Tallinn, Estonia.

James and I have come from Heathrow via Helsinki, then hopped across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn.

We"re two hours ahead of you here so play will begin lunchtime tomorrow for you. Stand by for many mis-spellings of Baltic names, Gerard Smyth stories and tales of Tallinn nightlife

We"ve got 130 names registered for the event so far, including Nine intrepid UK travellers.

Please join us tomorrow for what could well be fun and games. For me anyway. You lot can merely titter in the background.

Desperately tried to convince the missus that I could play this one, then fly down to Cyprus to meet up with the wife and kids at the start of the family holiday - she was having none of it!  can"t imagine why!

Good luck to those travelling...

I have just finished testing out the poker facilities and it bodes well for tomorrow.

Although I final tabled the £35 ish 1rebuy. I went out in 9th relatively short utg shove with 1010, got looked up by AJ and QQ and QQ scooped.

oh well, can"t do much about that.

The other UK players are currently out, seeing the sights. there are already stories! I am sure we will hear more tomorrow and keep you all entertained throughout tomorrow.

It"s been a long day, so off to bed.

Make sure you are here tomorrow for what will be a very interesting day.  ;D

Tucked up in bed last night I was strangely drawn to the attractions of the casino nightlife....

So, a hearty breakfast inside me this morning I set off exploring

Right next to the casino is "Police Park", so called because back in the days of Soviet Occupation the Police would lunch in this park next to their headquarters.

Designed to Stalinist architectural styles in the 1950s, with a fixed grid pattern, this park contains 46 different types of tree. If I counted correctly.

This park has a national significance as it was here that Soviet soldiers massacred innocent protestors during the first occupation at the turn of the 20th century. This statue commemorates that occasion

Five minutes later and I reach one of the old Towns. Tallin is a real mix of Soviet functionality and old character untouched since medieval towns. There are three "old quarters", a vibrant port and an awful lot of drab buildings in between

Here was my first sight of the old parts....
