See us sit like warriors in the blinds, straining upon the start. The game"s afoot: Follow your spirit; and upon this charge Cry "God for Brian! England and Saint George!"

APAT has come a long way in four years.

It"s profile has grown.

Here at APAT Towers we have received good luck messages for each of the teams, which I reproduce verbatim here

Nickelback say

"We are delighted to support Team Canada in the APAT Team Event, ey. Unfortunately we were unable, due to our heavy touring schedule, to form the team ourselves,ey, despite xxBlizzardzz asking us thirty seven times to do so, ey. However we are sure that Craig and his team will represent the trusty old Maple Leaf well and not come last, ey. Just don"t ask us again Blizzard, we"re even worse at poker than you are, ey."

Via an interpreter, Fabio Cappello says

" An England team not playing 4-4-2? Just playing 4-0-0? It will end in tears I tell you. I"d put Yates in the hole, Redfern sweeping at the back and Mason in goal. As for the fourth player, never heard of him. Up front then. Come on England, win the APAT event and you"ll be a shoo-in for BBC Sports Personality of the Year too. No one else seems to want to win it"

Carla Bruni says

"Regret nothing lads. Leave it all on the battlefield. Do it for Sarkozy, but most of all do it for me. Beat Les Rosbifs first and foremost and the rest will take care of itself. Smouldering kisses, Carla."

Angela Merkel says

"No pressure, but the future of the ruling coalition depends on you four. Possibly the whole continuance of the European model of integration, and ganging up with France to stuff the Brits. You have my permission to check down any pot with the French if it means knocking a Brit out, Ja!"

Nigel De Jong says

"Can I stop kicking the Spanish yet, Boss?"

He also says

"How much is Sheikh Mansour paying me at Man City? Ha Ha Ha"

Then he says

"It"s a beautiful game lads, Cruyff, Neeskens, Van Basten, Marcel Luske. Holland"s finest. Do them proud, bring back the trophy to the cafes of Amsterdam and we can glory in your success over a nice Diet Coke"
