The APAT forum challenge was 19th July 2008 in Blackpool and this may have been people trying to see which teams made it

or

Maybe it was unparalled interest in the Chezger Pre forum fish tank fest

I believe some form of common consensus was formed back then that July 8th was the day that "soon" would fall on, and that all would be revealed.  Alas...
