Ruling on a tournament straddle
« on: June 22, 2011, 13:51:45 PM »
I was reading Barry Greensteins tweets from the WSOP, where he mentioned a hand where he raised "in the dark".. Now I don"t know from which position he made this play, if UTG then I presume it was a " straddle" .. But if he had announced to the table he was going to make this play from a different position, how does this work?.. Does the dealer have to inform the whole table prior to dealing cards? Or is it a players own responsibility to be aware that it was mentioned pre dealing?....

Also I know from ruling that "straddles" are only allowed if the card room have it in their own terms and conditions,.. Which brings me to my other question, obv the Rio allow this as it happened in PLO event where BG made this play.. So does anyone know if DTD have a ruling?.. was thinking if this would be accepted in a APAT event, could work well if table dynamics are favourable..

Thanks Carl

A straddle can only be considered live in a cash game - ie, the straddler is buying the big blind and is last to act preflop.....

A live straddle is not allowed in a tournament - it just becomes a raise in the dark (and is pretty pointless imo).

If someone announces that they will raise dark and they are not UTG, imo they should be penalised for acting out of turn.

I"m assuming it was UTG also, but as AMRN suggests he didn"t call it a straddle - because it isn"t one.

There are a few situations where it"s good to act blind - but for every occasion where a random player does that, there will be a 100 times where a player is doing it just because he"s seen it on telly.

(i.e. I don"t think it"s a good thing to encourage in any way)

Not having read the tweet but doesnt it just mean that he"s raising without looking at his cards? Using his position, tells on other players etc meaning it doesn"t matter what cards he"s got he"s raising?

Copied from BGs tweets...

I have been straddling and playing in the dark in the 5k PLO. One one hand a guy limped so I couldn"t raise.
The flop came Ac3h2h. He checked, I bet, he called. Turn was 10s. He checked, I bet, he raise all in.
Now I looked and found AhAs5h5s! Top set, nut flush draw, gutshot, and extra blocker of the nuts!

The poor guy was dead to one out with his set of deuces. That"s the best looking in the dark hand I can recall.

So by the looks of things he was playing flop and turn in the dark.

Thank you for replies.. so it"s ok to raise in the dark in a tourney.. I guess when BG said "straddling" that"s what he
meant.

Edit.. One of tweets pasted arse about face
So say I wanted to raise blind UTG in a APAT tourney to say kickstart a tight table at DTD, this is deemed within rules?
