Title: Vegas News - 2012
Post by: Paulie_D on January 27, 2012, 12:03:45 PM
OK....clearly, as of the time of writing the Lord Des of Duff has not yet announced a S6 schedule so this thread is just for staking a claim.

I will, DEFINITELY, being heading to Vegas in 2012...probably in November and, whether this fits in with the plans of others is a matter for them. If we can only achieve a small fraction of the hilarity that ensued in 2011 it"ll be epic.

I have very tentative thoughts of making the visit in early November as I have a friend (some of you may know Jim Lynott) who is planning on heading our to LA (not Vegas...that"s coming) for the Breeders Cup which will be returning to Santa Anita this year.

This will be 2nd & 3rd (Fri/Sat) of November. From there, he is, as I said, tentatively, thinking of driving to Las Vegas (told you) perhaps by way of Laughlin.

This probably wont be a grand repeat of the 2009 Grand Tour (read more HERE (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=7090.msg131874#msg131874)) but if you followed that link it might give you some idea.

Me, I"ll be going for two weeks whether falling in line with Jim or not but here"s some food for thought. If you like horse racing...there you are.

We stay at the Commerce Casino (http://www.commercecasino.com/default.aspx) which is also a Crowne Plaza hotel (same group at Holiday Inn) and this is only a few minutes drive from the Bicycle Casino (http://www.thebike.com/).

Frankly, a two or three days/nights was enough for me but these should be experienced if you have the time.

Laughlin, a whole other vibe from Vegas and yet, only a couple of hours drive away and a whole lot cheaper.

Food for thought.

You should investigate some sort of "xmas club" type operation Paulie.  People deposit £10 or £20 per week and you manage the fund.  Block book everything and enjoy the economies of scale.

It"s cold outside and, of course, thoughts of Vegas have been running through my brain.

I like to try hotels that I haven"t stayed at before (at least for part of the trip) so, I"m thinking TI (that"s the new name for Treasure Island) for, at the very least, a couple of nights.

I can probably swing that on some "Loyalty Points" from various sources.

But then the Venetian (where I would be spending most of my time when on the Strip) also beckons. Not cheap (from my perspective) at minimum c.$140 a night (before tax & wi-fi)...I"d have to spend some points to do that one as well (or instead of).

IF, and it"s still a BIG if, I do..ahem, do the LA road-trip thing then I"m down to 10 days (ish) in Vegas. I want to stay at the Orleans for, say, 5 nights...I like it there...so to "mix "n" match" with all my choices I"d be switching hotels a lot.

Or perhaps I should just book into Harrah"s or Imperial Palace for a week again (for location preference). I think we"ll probably get enough people to sort out a Group Rate....but then I"m repeating hotels.

Decisions, decisions....and, yes, I know I"m spoiled for choice.

Wait...I"ve had a thought...anyone else wanna stay at the the Orleans?

I am not really bothered where I stay, I am not one to care about trying new hotels. However I would like to stay in the one place, where that place is I am not fussy. So wherever the majority of eventual travellers stay is OK with me.

Probably bump the prices up a little though...we"ll see.

From what I understand the IP is having its floor raised to put it at the same level as the neighboring casinos and extended into O"Sheas. There will however be a O"Sheas/ Beer pong branded bar.

Hmmm.

With the re-organisation of the forum, there"s a chance this could fall off everyone"s radar.

I"m torn.  I don"t think Des would like me to pin it and I hate doing the "bump" thing.

Not sure how to resolve this.

Should we just hope for the best that we can keep it alive?

Construction has started on the Linq....the retail / restaurant / experience / walkway thingy that will run from Harrah"s Carnaval Court, through the IP and on to the FlamimgO.

Some of the shops on the south side of the CC have been closed up and boarded off although the Court itself remains in operation.

The "Capri" tower of the IP has now been demolished (which is all it was fit for) and, of course, the IP will be changing it"s name as part of the overall project.

Apparently O"Sheas staff were hit with 60-day termination notices on 1st March which many believe means that demolition (as such) will be commencing in early June/July 2012 although O"Sheas will be back in the form of a themed "area" as part of the Linq

Project Linq (http://www.vegaschatter.com/story/2011/8/17/222817/041/vegas-travel/A+Closer+Look+At+The+Linq%2C+And+Why+It+May+Be+Genius) is due for final completion in June/July 2013.

We could hold a candle light vigil for the IP/O"Sheas in November.  ;D

I have special memories of the IP, people hated it for its oldness etc but I stayed there a couple of times and liked its afforability and position on the strip. Saying that, the plans for the linq look good if they price it right. The emphasis on new builds in Vegas seems to be shifting away from the gambling to "other" entertainment. Inevitable I suppose in these austere times.

The IP itself wont, as I understand it, be demolished just refurbished with, I suppose, an inevitable increase in room costs.

It"ll be interesting to see what the new name is and what the new pricing will be.

I played in O"sheas yesterday and managed to bink a $50 bonus when I flopped quad sevens! Had a nice double up in a three hour cash session and the place was absolutely bouncing! Craps games were as rowdy as ever with a guy winning  $5000 in one session! Bought a commemorative O"Sheas card guard for $10, any body want one post here and I"ll bring ya one back.( obv ya"ll have to pay me back....I am a Yorkshireman!)

I always stay at the IP in Vegas. I love their little card room. Also, right opposite CP and easy for the Harrah"s bus to the Rio. One year I played so much cash there that when I next stayed at the IP I got seven nights for about £60!

I"m booked in there for early June. Is that going to be a problem? I haven"t had an email from them.

Was in vegas just after Easter with the family. Terrible trip for me as I had flu and spent a lot of the trip in my hotel room, sigh.

Lots of work going on at IP, obv just looks a mess at the moment. MGM doing some work too.
The gameworks arcade next to M&Ms has closed, my 5 year old just loved hearing that.

Had a huge argument with the taxi driver at the airport, who thought I was offending him asking him to take tropicana instead of the tunnel! Taxi drivers seem to get worse everytime I go, still he soon found out how "non british" I could be once he opened his mouth..lol

So...O"Sheas is no more.

This Las Vegas institution of cheapo drinks, leprechauns and Strip Poker (cos the tables were open to the Strip) closed its doors last night. See image at the "semi-official" CET blog HERE (http://lasvegasblog.harrahs.com/las-vegas-hotels/fans-bid-farewell-at-osheas-casino-closing/)

A few hours later they imploded the parking structure behind it.

Beer Pong has moved to Bills Gamblin Hall.

With the Linq construction work going on, renovations at the IP mean that their Poker room has now moved to the third floor of the IP.

Fat Elvis has moved from Bills (perhaps to make room for the Beer Pong  ;D) to Harrahs Piano Bar. Perhaps he"ll be fronting up the Duelling Piano Twins from now on?

The IP is still there otherwise they wouldn"t take your booking. Be prepared for a fair amount of construction though. They"ve closed Rockhouse, that bar/club out front and also closed the entrance to vehicle traffic from the Strip.

The old poker room has been boarded up (AFAIK) and the poker is now held on the 3rd Floor (I think). The good news is that you can now access the poker room via that escalator from the Strip (that used to go to the Karaoke area).

Other areas of IP might be closed from time to time as work continues.

Here"s a couple of Vegas news sites that are pretty current on this sort of thing.

All change at McCarran.

Come the end of June, the old T2 will be retired (pending refurb/demolition/rebuild) and the new T3 will come into use.

This is of note because everyone"s favourite airline (Virgin) will be switching over.

In a flurry of rumours, it appears that IF the Imperial Palace does indeed get renamed, it will be called "The Horseshoe".

And "Yes" I can see where this could be going...given the previous reputation of the IP.

So...I"m still undecided about my last hotel for Paulie"s Las Vegas Adventure.

I have 3 nights booked at the Excal (where I have stayed before) for a lousy $50 night (roughly) but I"m not entirely happy with this.

Oh, sure it"s convenient for MGM, NYNY, Luxor & MB but, for some reason, I"m kind of going off the idea.

So, where else?

Ideally, it would be somewhere I haven"t stayed before. Now price is a factor and on looking through the deals i can find it"s (at the moment) a toss up between the Monte Carlo and Bally"s (still looking).

I think Bally"s has the edge (location-wise) but the MC has The Pub.

Decisions, decisions.

Any other idea bearing in mind financial constraints?

Use this to try and bid on a good place - this was how I got Vdara for £45 a night last year. Remember to add resort fees on top.

I have just got back and stayed at The Flamingo. Very impressed got the room for $500/week and  rooms impressed me especially for the value. Also such a central venue that you cant go wrong imo

Thanks for those....I"ve stayed at the FlamingO in a GO room a couple of year back.

Vdara, I"m not keen on City Center....too freakin far from anywhere.

I"m leaning towards Ballys myself...I"ve not stayed there, the prices are decent (no resort fee) and I hear the $20 trick works most of the time.

At worst, I"m not UNHAPPY with the Excal but I"ve been there and done that....

Found on VegasChatter (http://www.vegaschatter.com/story/2012/9/7/123541/7778/vegas-travel/The+Week+Before+The+Most+Wonderful+Time+Of+The+Year+Is+The+Most+Wonderful) today...quite handy I thought since Ger and I will be there then. I had, on a previous Xmas trip, noticed that it was a little quieter but not perhaps as drastic as the writer of the article has pointed out.

We"ll see.

Quote

Ever since this writer has been visiting Las Vegas, he always made it a point to visit the week before Christmas. At first, available vacation dates just happened to fall during that week, but amidst our first trip we learned something awesome about the week before Christmas in Vegas. It"s AWESOME.

The week before Christmas is the most dead week of the year in Las Vegas. A dealer at MGM Grand mentioned that the hotel was only at 25% capacity even though the hotel was hosting teams from the Las Vegas Bowl and a national cheerleader competition. (It was as creepy as Dance Moms on TV.)

Beside hotel rooms being extremely cheap, we found it very easy get reservations at any restaurant at any time. In fact, reservations the week before Christmas may not even be necessary. The tables in the casino aren"t very busy so we"ve never had a problem getting in on a game with a group of friends. We"ve even found ample elbow room at that. Since there are so few people, the cocktail waitresses are able to bring drinks faster than any other time of the year, too.

The week before Christmas is a great time of the year to explore new things in Las Vegas. The lower hotel room prices can allow you the ability to stay in a more luxurious hotel then you normally would. The quiet time also can allow you to gain access to places you"d normally not be able to get into or to try things you"ve avoided because of crowds.

Even though this writer lives in Las Vegas now, he still takes this time of the year as an excuse to take a staycation in Las Vegas. It"s almost time that our friends book their flights which also means that it"s almost time to look for rooms. Happy Holidays!

So the debate still rages in my head...Monte Carlo or Ballys.

The price differential isn"t quite as great as I had thought since I found a couple of offers at the MC.

I"ll be centre Strip for a couple of weeks so Ballys would be more of the same and since the MC has easy access to City Center it"ll be handy for a visit of nothing else.

On a real plus side, Monte Carlo has The Pub.  ;D

Offers I have found are:

3 nights - $187.00 with nothing added or

3 nights - $213.00 with
- Invited Guest Check-in
- The Social Band
- All Day Happy Hour at The Pub
- 15% Off Retail Outlets
- 20% Off Any Minus5 Packages
- 15% Off Food Purchases at d.vino or Dragon Noodle Co.

So pay $26 more but get All Day Happy Hour at The Pub...I think I would get my money"s worth over 3 days...don"t you?

A little more info from Vegas Chatter.

Proposed renovated/restructured interior..

Quote

The casino floor will expand an additional 15,000 square feet engulfing the former Imperial Palace porte cochere and a nightclub and gift shop.

The first phase of casino renovations will include 35,000 square feet, including the expansion, and is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2013.

The second phase will include an additional 30,000 square feet of gaming space with a centralized promenade bar featuring state-of-the-art integrated audio-visual technology. This phase is scheduled for completion in late 2013.

While the original resort's main entrance was Strip-facing, the main entrance and porte cochere to The Quad will be located on the north side of the building with access via Koval Road or the Harrah's tunnel off Las Vegas Blvd.

A pedestrian walkway, offering a safe pathway for guests on foot, will make its way from the adjacent Harrah's Carnaval Court through to the south side of The Quad into The LINQ, Caesars' $550 million retail, dining and entertainment district slated for opening late next year.

Plans also include a dual-sided lobby bar, Starbucks, a retail promenade and a series of restaurants and eateries.

To be honest, I haven"t looked at it too closely but it seems like a lot (per segment) but if you need the points then why not.

It"s probably cheaper than buying them.

At the end of the day it"s more a question of how you will spend the miles that you earn.

Not asking for toooo much.

Actually, it is...in the USA. Oh, a doddle for Thanksgiving but not so easy for Xmas.

Regardless, I fired off an email in November to the Crown & Anchor and the reply I got was this:

Quote

We may or may not offer our Christmas Day and Boxing Day dinners at the Spring Mountain [Paulie"s preferred location] pub this year.

However, we have served these dinners at the Tropicana pub for almost twenty years.  The menu isn"t decided, but it is usually turkey, or prime rib, with all the trimmings for a reasonable price.  It is VERY festive in here.

I recommend you contact us during December for a reservation, unless you choose to eat at the bar.

Cheers!

I fired off another yesterday to see what the position was but nothing yet. I"ll give them a bell when I get there and book us in.

On another note, I"ve booked my visit to visit the good folks at the Vegas Video Network  (http://www.vegasvideonetwork.com/) for a taping on 18th December of Living In Las Vegas.

Now, Saturday Don Logan will be in (and rested) and John Windsor will be at McMullans.

I love it when a plan comes together.

In the interim, I"m sure Ger and I can find SOMETHING to do.
