Title: I have a question...
Post by: suzanne on October 19, 2012, 02:41:38 AM
Is Apat ever going to come to the South West?

I may be wrong but as far as I can recall there has never been a live event in my region.

The reason I ask is not because I mind travelling, its because so many poker players in the SW just dont know you exist. I tried to do a bit of recruiting for the league recently when I was playing in Bristol and was quite surprised at how many said they had never heard of Apat.

No wonder I am struggling to get a decent sized team together  ::)

Suzanne,

I think this has come up before but the usual answer is the lack of casinos to:

1. Hold 150-200 players AND
2. Run such an event to APAT standards AND
3. Willing to run such an event at a cost that can be agreed upon, AND
4. Other reasons.

I know that Brizzle has a number of casinos but whether they can (or are willing to ) host an APAT event is another matter.

Of course, Des might surprise us in S7.

Not that I play much in Bristol but I think at the moment there is only the Gala so not much choice at all.

Didnt Plymouth hold some big event recently?

To be honest I don"t keep up with the goings on with you carrot-crunchers.  ;D

I"m just re-iterating / parroting what Tighty has said before.

I"m not saying that it"s never going to happen, frankly, I"d love a trip down to Devon or Cornwall.

Try PM"ing the Powers That Be (Des/Matt/Leigh) and suggesting they make enquiries for S7.

Couldn"t hurt.

Hello

the problem with Plymouth is it is a bugger to get to for most. Doesn"t hold 150 either iirc

Bristol, I never felt the Gala Bristol was on my radar (in terms of running poker tournaments, the only one I knew of that was run there from an organisation I was involved with was disappointng)

Since then One Way Poker has run numerous events there, the UKIPT is about to go there and now Mr Dale on board might change things. After all, I suspect he"d quite like to host 40 APATers on the Friday night of an APAT weekend in his gaffe. Thanks for the offer Matt. We"ll mind the ornaments

Not my gig now, but I think there is a higher chance than previously that Bristol would be considered now

Yeah...cos Glasgow is a piece of p*ss.  ;D

Room size would be the big factor though.

Glasgow is an hour"s flight from London

Plymouth is five hours in a train from London, and two hours beyond Bristol in a car

It"s about transport networks, range of travel options as well as physical location...

as you know, guru!

I think that between Matt and myself, assuming there is a suitable venue, we will be pushing heavily for a South West leg in season 7.

The easiest venue for me to get to over the past few seasons has actually been Luton, when you consider travel, accommodation, parking etc.

Nice idea but adding on another hour"s drive (because it doesn"t have a station at the airport) is asking a bit much of the generally lazy* APAT mob.

Grosvenor has taken over the Jongleurs area next door in Gunwharf and is building a dedicated poker room (the first one they have built, apparently, as opposed to taken over and refurbished). There will also be a Lady G showbar, whatever that is.

10 tables as standard, but they will be taking over other areas of the casino for bigger tournaments. They have already been asked to hold a GUKPT.

With everything that Gunwharf Quay has to offer on its doorstep, gonna be the best venue in the country.

Opening in December.

For poker maybe, but it"s on an industrial site with a few eating chains, miles from anything else.

Whereas Gunwharf, apart from the marina, 95 designer outlets, 30 restaurants & bars, TigerTiger nightclub, Spinnaker Tower (did I mention it"s the highest publicly-accessible structure in the UK outside London, ie higher than Blackpool Tower for example - and has a glass floor), 14-screen cinema, 26-lane bowling alley, art gallery, power-boat rides, 10-minute hovercraft to Isle of Wight, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc is also near my house.

I think you mean tallest. If it"s at sea-level it"s not likely to be the highest, is it? By definition, at its base it must be one of the lowest!

Whatever - 560 feet high (or tall) is still pretty up there. This is the lowest of the 3 viewing decks:

My only complaint about Bristol Gala would be that the 2 times I have played Oneway there the "buffet" has been sausage, chips and baked beans....whos bright idea was it to give 100+ blokes baked beans!!!  ::)

Yorkshire is easy drive down M74 and across A66 Wayne  ;) I do that fairly regularly as my brother lives in Pontefract, but places like Portsmouth/Plymouth etc are a nightmare for us lot up here without regular flights. I tried Southampton once when I planned to go to Bestival on Isle Of Wight. Flight times/prices etc were a joke and I ended up driving anyway, pretty horrendous drive though  :P

Not sure how I missed this thread.

I would love to see an APAT Bristol event in Season 7.

lol @ Tighty"s post about party at mine :) No thanks! :) Also, sorry Paulie no BBQ - I"m a long time veggie anyway :o

If Bristol Gala is good enough for Pokerstars, then I think we should definitely consider it. I"m going to be playing a few sides and the Main during the UKIPT, so will have some experience of what it"s like playing a large tourney there.

The One Way Poker tourneys that have been hosted there have been absolutely first class - aside from the food which was absolutely awful. But, APAT events don"t tend to have included buffets anyway, so if Gala are throwing one in for no extra I"d be grateful for whatever it is. Though, for the last OWP, we just went to eat elsewhere (Hooters iirc).

"ZaZa Bazaar FTW then!" - Looks good to me (I"m in).

I thought the Last OneWay event organisation was okay. Free food "buffet" was awful. Tournament started late without any communication. Was able to Reg at Casino without any problems over the phone.

Had 1/2 dealers who were hopeless (couldn"t handle antes or count pots/change effectively).

Nothing to the standards I"d seen in the GPS - which have been very high. Can"t really remember but I think D2D was very good.

Be interesting to see how they run UKIPT next month.

Would also love to see APAT there (convenient) but not at the expense of Cardiff.

Nearest airport to Portsmouth is Eastleigh...Southampton, I believe.

About an hour away by train from Portsmouth.

That"s right, sometimes a bit less, but pretty much an hour. But the train journeys are almost door-to-door at both ends.

Southampton Airport must be the shortest plane-to-train anywhere. If you are laden with luggage the journey from the terminal might take you up to a minute - otherwise it should be much quicker. Last week my plane parked where the second one from the bottom is. I had no luggage, so just walked straight through the airport and round to the train. Admittedly I had to hurry, as the train was arriving, but I was on the train literally within two minutes of stepping off the plane.

Alternatively, it"s about 20 miles by road, which is motorway all the way, so a taxi will get you there in no time - not too costly if you share it.

places like Portsmouth/Plymouth etc are a nightmare for us lot up here without regular flights. I tried Southampton once when I planned to go to Bestival on Isle Of Wight. Flight times/prices etc were a joke

I"m not having that. I used to fly to Glasgow regularly and it is the easiest arrangement possible. The last time was - last weekend.

There are 9/10 flights in each direction between Southampton and Edinburgh on weekdays, with fewer at weekends.

There are flights at 6.10pm and 8.45pm from Ed on Fridays (and lots earlier). On a Saturday morning there are flights at 7.10 and 11.05, arriving at 8.45 and 12.35, which should see you to Gunwharf in nice time (the station is right beside Gunwharf too).

Going back, there are 5 flights on Sundays, including one at 8.30pm. 10 flights on a Monday, including one at 7.00am, which arrives at 8.30am.

Glasgow is similar. What more do you want?

I ended up driving anyway, pretty horrendous drive though  :P

Again, I used to drive it regularly - up to Hamilton on Friday night, back on Sunday evening. It"s not as bad as it would seem - a straight 6 hours if you don"t hang around and don"t waste time stopping for breaks. You"ll sleep well after it though.
