Title: Raise and Re Raise
Post by: EddieB58 on June 30, 2008, 12:20:00 PM
Hi all,

I organise regular poker tourneys 2/3 times a week at our local football club, which have been very successful for about 18 months. We get about 16/20 runners each game.

Last night a situation came up, and caused a fair amount of discussion as to the correct ruling. Wonder if anyone could give me a ruling?

Three players left in a pot, blinds 200/400. utg calls 400, short stack also calls. BB raises 400, utg calls and short stack calls and goes all in for another 350. This is where the argument occured, BB then calls 350 plus 800 re raise. Is this allowed as he had already made one raise? Or should he have just paid 400 for the cost of BB?

I felt he could, but others felt not!

Hope this is clear and understandable, any help would be gratefully received.

Nice one. I also organise poker tourneys and TD them.

In your particular scenario I wouldn"t have allowed the final re-raise.

The BB was the original raiser to 800.

Called by UTG.

Re-raise all in by short stack taking the bet to 1150.

The rules that I enforce are that any raise must take the bet to double the previous bet. So, if the short stack had gone all in for 1600 or more then the further re-raise by the BB would have been ok. However, by the rules that I enforce, the all in move is not a full raise and therefore the original raiser can only call.

Some rules allow raises in multiples of the original raise, in this particular case, 400. Even if these rules are applied the final re-raise would not be allowed as the all in didn"t bring the bet up to 1200.

I hope this makes sense.....

Ian

Many thanks for that, seems a sensible argument.

In the event I decided to allow just the 350 call by BB and utg to save further discussion.

Yup - once someone has shoved with an "under raise" (not enough chips left to make a full raise), the only players who can then re-raise are those who have not yet acted.... anyone who has already acted can only call the under raise. (I think)

I"d add this to your tourney rules...........then there should be no arguments. You do have tourney rules, Don"t You?  :P
