...is bloody good!! Had it for Christmas, and got round to reading the first couple of chapters this afternoon..... then played a bit tonight, and having been on a severe downswing for a couple of months, I turned $20 into $180 playing .10/.20 for 90 minutes, and won a $12 180 seat SNG on Stars for $594.
Decent book!!! $742 up for the night :)
-
WOW, as endorsements go, that"s pretty good.
wp that man. (I mean Gus, obviously ;D )
-
good work steve. I"ve read Gus" book too and cant think how that helped you. I"d be taking all the credit there
-
It"s good to learn how to play a big stack - assuming you"ve got as far as that by now, but I wouldn"t recommend it that highly. It is good if you want to learn how to bully, no doubt about it.
-
I"ve read it twice and am still c%*p. :(
-
How many APAT Nationals has that Hansen fella won?

my point exactly John!! ;D
-
Must be something in the water tonight - just finished my next 180 seat SNG and came 8th..... and on the .10/.20 cash table on the side turned $20 into $74
Around $850 up for the night. What a book - can"t wait to read chapter 3!! :)
-
Tis a great read but I wonder how much long term success you could have playing Gus"s way.
Cliff"s notes: lead out at a lot of pots and re raise a lot. Reason it works for Gus so much is cos if you have a raggedy board and he"s betting at you it probably slows you down cos it"s Gus Hansen! He could have anything and could do anything at any time!!!!
-
He could have anything and could do anything at any time!!!!
But isn"t that the point??! The art of poker is reading your opponent and being able to make an informed decision...... but if you can"t put your opponent on a hand, then you"re at a disadvantage and making decisions in the dark.
If we all just sit around waiting for AA, the game would be so boring and so very predicatable. Surely adding a bit of "Gus" to your game is essential to keep your game fresh, and to keep your opponents on their toes.
-
$850 up in one night! I wouldn"t bother reading any more!! Well I didn"t read any books and was $50 up on the 25/50c cash!! Now where is that Hansen bloke? ???

OMG!!!
Does this mean your widening your already chasm-like range??? God help us all

Nope - I will continue in my usual quiet and uber-tight style, with a starting range no wider than a gnat"s wotsit!

Must be that climate change producing some massive wotsits then :D
-
I read his book and the day after played a $50 MTT on PKR, and very quickly got a massive chip lead, half an hour later and i"m 1st out of about 180 initial runners, then clash with the guy in 2nd who i just have covered and we both chuck it in on a J high board I have J6, he had a better J though.
I"ve done crap since. ;D

I agree AMRN- what I am trying to say is that Gus has a lot more equity in playing the way he does cos he"s renound for it. You or I will get called or raised when sometimes he will earn a fold. Brian Townsend says later in the book that Gus never bluffs!!!
Am I making sense? I don"t think I"m expressing my argument very well

lol why?!?
I was on the greatest run of tournament wins in my life until I read that book and made some tactical changes. I started losing, I started drinking, I got spotty, my wife left me, my house got repossessed and Eduardo broke his leg against Birmingham and Arsenal"s season fell apart. I"ve still not recovered.

I met Gus Hansen in an EPT event 2 yrs. ago , I am an above average backgammon player and thats how it started the conversation , after a while i asked him on his unorthodox style of playing poker and his reply to me was his reads on players comes after the flop but before the flop you have to do the math as in blackjack for the cards to hold up , didnt understand at first but after a while i had it down pact.

oh rite then, ummm ouch, eh?
I say throw ur shoes at him at the next final table he starts bossing.
-
Gus hansens style does so well because of the structure of the big tourneys that he plays.
For example i dont think you could have played his style at one of our regional events from last season. You would have dribbled all of your chips away in the first two or three levels. Similar to Daniels (kid poker) small ball style. You need a slow clock and big starting stack, so that you can use post flop skill over hoping to get delt good starting hands.
If you try gus or daniels style in a Online SNG, then your reslults will dramtically drop, trust me i know because i tried it out a few months ago. ABC poker is the only way to go with the faster tourneys.

Not all bad news then? :D

I highly rated his book thought it was better than the others as it doesnt tell you how to play this hand that way and that hand this way, and his explanations are great when he makes plays that make you think hes a mad man
Helped me pick up a nice second place in a $24 full tilt MTT and my biggest win online so far

The book is very interesting and a great read. I couldn"t put it down.
It"s wrong for people to suddenly expect overnight success by playing Gus"s way. It"s taken him years to perfect (if that"s the right word). Remember, he"s playing out of position almost all of the time which is much harder to do.
You will notice how many walks he gets. He has built up this reputation of defending his blinds, and as a result, people just won"t bother trying to steal. They"re just too scared to play him, because they know they"ll be outplayed. What a great reputation to have! :D
There is an interesting thread on 2+2 where Jimmy Fricke (Gobboboy) gives his account for some of the hands, particularly when they were HU. You need to start from about post #133. The thread does deteriorate unfortunately in true 2+2 style as people start trading insults.

The Pokerstars Deepstack tournaments are slower than almost any other tournament on the planet - they might be a good place to experiment if you want to try and bring elements of these 2 styles into your play.

Yep or the APAT tourneys! Word of caution if you wanna play the stars deepstackers- they are VERY VERY VERY deepstacked!!!

That"s one helluva thread on 2+2 - almost as long as the book itself!!
-
... and how much of a pounding does Gobboboy take ... ?
Fair dues to him though, he sticks with it (as far as I"ve read to anyway).

I couldnt get over the number of posts many of the regulars on there have..... loads seem to have 4000+, and a handful upward of 15000. Perhaps they are professional forumites, or more likely they have little else to do....
Puts Kinboshi to shame!!
-
just to echo what george2loose said about how deep stacked the pokerstars tourneys are.......
i played in one not so long ago, on a saturday night.
$20 +$2 buy in....450 players and it started at about 11.15 pm.....i went bust at 6.30 am and came in at 24th i think....
there is so much room to try different styles and tactics, and get a feel for you table. I reckon if it was not so late (or early) i would have done better.
As a side note, iv also seen chris moneymaker playing in these.....lol.
