Title: ENGLAND - European Team Championships 2009
Post by: kinboshi on June 25, 2009, 11:20:25 AM
Much to the chagrin of many I am the team captain for England for the European Team Championships taking place in November 2009.

To have the role as captain is an honour, but it"s also a headache.  I have to select a team of just 4 players, and so it"s obvious that some excellent players who"d like to represent England are going to be disappointed.

I"m still determining the criteria I"ll use to select the team, but in the meantime please PM me if you"re interested in putting your name into the hat.  I"ve already had a few dozen people PM me expressing their desire to be part of the team and I will make sure I consider each and every one of you.

One thing"s for sure though.  I"m picking a team to win it.  We"re going to have a good few days as well, but the plan is to win it all.  If we don"t win, it won"t be through lack of commitment.  One thing"s for sure though, we"ll beat the sweaties ;).

maybe running a mini league tournament for the english players would be the best way?

or perhaps, picking 2 players and then letting 2 players win their place.

I haven"t thought about the format or anything, but since we have a lot of good players it would be an opportunity for them to face off and find the best of the best maybe.

Something that could then be deployed year on year.

Ro-Sham-Bo for a place. All names in to a hat wich are then drawn in to pairs. Pm Kin your selection and he posts the result.
Play down to 4 obv. Piece of p innit.

That was another method I thought of using.  Necking pints was a third.

I considered something like this, but how would it account for variance?  It would have to be a series of STTs and HU matches, but to get a statistically valid sample we"d be talking hundreds if not thousands of games.

There might be something in it though, possibly.

I did think about the variance issue, but playing a few games should counter this (WSOP Heads Up final is 3 games for this reason). Which is why i said maybe pick two in form players and let the others fight it out. Stars do it this way for the Poker Nations cup.

At least you will definitely know that two of your players have beaten a lot already to play there.

Probably as statistically valid as running a mini series

I think players that win or go deep in APAT and other events are going to be the one"s in contention.

That"s not going to give a massive shortlist - after that it"s down to the captains judgement.

So we know who to blame if we don"t win.

I"m sure you"re right. It"s more likely to be through lack of ability.

I think the Irish and Scots are worried about the England team.  Why else would they feel the need to come onto a thread about the England team and post their witty comments?

Is there an equivalent of the penalty shoot out for England to lose at?

If there was, the Scots wouldn"t even qualify for the main event.

Three national championships so far this year.

Event 1 winner - English
Event 2 winner - English
Event 3 winner - English

No sign of any scots, irish, etc. Maybe they"re winning the online nationals....... nope!!

From what I recall clearly from last year, the teams who excelled at this event had one thing in common.  Incredible team spirit.  There were lots of strong individuals dotted throughout most of the teams, but when it came down to it the Irish, Scots and Germans supported each other more passionately than the other teams did.  Who knows, it might be a significant drawback to have four individual champions on your team, if they don"t gel.  What a great and interesting tournament this will be...

From what I recall clearly from last year, the teams who excelled at this event had one thing in common.  Incredible luck of the Irish, or to be more specific, a cardrack called Pat.

FYP

The team spirit thing is a key factor in this event though.  Those teams that shone through, clearly had a togetherness over the weekend.  They also had a skilled and talented team captain, who was able to gel the team members together to get the most out of them, by utilising not only the team captains poker knowledge and skills, but also maximising the skills of their team.

I"ll leave the punchline open........................

I think the team spirit is a coincidence

I can"t see any logical, statistical or analytical reason why a non-team game like poker would benefit from it.

I recall a similar theme around England"s Nations Cup victory the other year - the summary of that was that England were the only team acting like a group of individuals during the tournament rather than getting cosy with loads of bonding.

They won that, teams with good team spirit did well in this last time -to me this reinforces the evidence in favour of coincidence.

I think these are probably the definitions Dan was considering..... taken from various dictionaries...

scare   - daunt: cause to lose courage;
scared  - frightened: made afraid; ie "the frightened child cowered in the corner"; (replace "child" with "Scot" here)
scare   - panic: sudden mass fear and anxiety over anticipated events

O Flower of Scotland
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for
Your wee bit Hill and Glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward"s Army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now
And Autumn leaves lie thick and still
O"er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
That stood against him
Proud Edward"s Army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.
Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him

Now the WCOAP is done and dusted, I will be looking at the short-list of "contenders" and putting together a final team of four.

I"ll contact each one privately and see if they are still interested in playing and can make the dates.  If not, I"ll then go through an alternates list.

Hoping to do this during the week.

Can I be considered please Dan?

My main credential for selection is that you stay at my house when you"re playing at DTD so if I don"t get in you"ve got to start paying for hotels.

I"m not actually available to play but it would be nice to know that I would"ve got in if I could make it.

Unfortunately I won"t be able to  make it as I"m away visiting friends.

I"m sorry to let you down as obviously you wanted me in the team cus I"m dead good but you might still have a chance without me. I"m sure there"s at least one England player other than me who know"s what they"re doing.

I did as you asked, and have looked back over my family tree, but unfortunately it"s 100% Welsh.

Surely your other applications cannot be as bad as you have suggested ?

Best of luck scraping a team together, just remember, it"s the taking part that counts.

Dan,

Cheers for the PM.  I"m really honoured that you would want me as third choice in your team, however, as I have mentioned before, I am an administrator.

I did as you asked, and have looked back over my contract, but unfortunately it"s 100% non play.

Surely your other applications cannot be as bad as you have suggested ?

Best of luck scraping a team together, just remember, it"s the taking part that counts.

Funny how those from the minor nations, such as the scots and the welsh find the need to troll in this thread.

They"ve obviously picked out the strongest team for this year"s championship and are trying to upset them before it all starts.

We are going to win it all.

JERUSALEM

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England"s mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England"s pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear! O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire.
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England"s green and pleasant land.

Rule, Britannia

When Britain first, at heaven"s command,
Arose from out the azure main,
Arose, arose, arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian Angels sung this strain:

Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must in their turn, to tyrants fall,
Must in their turn, must in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.

THERE"LL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLAND
There"ll always be an England,
While there"s a country lane,
Wherever there"s a cottage small
Beside a field of grain.
There"ll always be an England,
While there"s a busy street,
Wherever there"s a turning wheel
A million marching feet.
Red, white and blue,
What does it mean to you?
Surely you"re proud
Shout it aloud.
Britons awake!
The Empire too,
We can depend on you,
Freedom remains
These are the chains
Nothing can break.
There"ll always be an England,
And England shall be free,
If England means as much to you
As England means to me.
"This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in a silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house
Against the envy of less happier lands
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm
This England"
