Title: Cash game top-up ??
Post by: BOOTSY100 on October 02, 2007, 18:02:48 PM
Hello

Just wondering what people think about keeping your balance toped up in cash games.

I go in with the the Maximum allowed as i learnt some harsh lessons by going in short stacked and being bullied.

But have noticed recently a number of players will reload to max every time they loose even 5 - 10 %.

Surely this makes it more difficult to pace yourself and means you risk becoming a calling station.

My take is that it gives me a target to get back to level and then head for profit. It makes me concentrate and play better poker.

but i would like some opinions.

On a final note anyone going to Gt Yarmouth Saturday to watch me take the GOLD !!

Doyle brunson always takes the max to the cash tables and will always top up if he falls below. That would be good enough for me.

As someone who rarely plays online cash, I will assume it is because you want max value from all in situations.

Keep topping up.  When you win big, you maximise your winnings.

I find that setting artificial targets, such as getting back to level (for example) mean that you deviate from your A-game.  If I see a player get back to level, and then get involved in a pot on a dangerous board, I"m going to be betting into them knowing that they are likely to be getting out of the way.  After working hard to get level again, they aren"t going to want to risk a big chunk of chips immediately.

Just my thoughts.  Your mileage may vary.

Bootsy, being ill at the moment will probably prevent me from travelling from Norwich to snatch that gold from you this weekend, so I"ll let you have this one ;D. I suppose it still gives me 3 more to collect........... Are you are regular at The Grosvenor in Yarmouth? Do you know many other people who are going?

I"ll auto top-up even if just a SB below max buy-in. ALWAYS sit with max buy-in.

Same here, I always keep topped up when playing cash. If your playing 00.25c/50c and you drop down to say $30 and double up you only gain $10 profit. But if you top up to $50 and double up you get $30 profit.

That said, there is a strategy I sometimes use which is to play short stacked and play tighter but more aggressive as you"ll find the big stacks do not get the right implied odds to call your raises with small pocket pairs etc as you don"t have enough back.

Me being one of those players who is always fleeced by the minbuyiner. They are so annoying!. They sit down with $10, double up then do one. One of the reasons I hate online cash. The other being that I am a donk at it.

I have to admit to being one of those people that would play short stacked, double up and then move to another table - very profitable over the long term  ;D

That is certainly another approach.  Not sure it"s the best approach to maximise long-term profits - but it does seem to work for some.

I prefer to be the one with the biggest stack, making others make decisions for the rest of their stacks.

Got to agree with Kinboshi on this one ..

I have seen players lose the bulk of their stack and then almost immediately hit a monster hand, only to get a small payday. I don"t keep reloading every time a drop a $ or two but if I do take a sizeable hit, I top up immediately.

With careful observation (something I feel most people are weak at online) you can spot playing styles in particular when a player is short stacked.
