Just got back from the Black Country Summer Deepstack event and believe it or not, I read through this whole thread for the first time as I didn"t know it was here !!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Des and all of the APAT team who may have had a say in choosing me to Captain the England team. Having played in the event last year I looked on that as a tremendous honour. How good is it to be able to say that you have been chosen from hundreds if not thousands of players to play for your Country?
This year though, to actually have the chance to pick the side goes one better. Believe me, I feel honoured to be in this position and I promise you all that I will choose the team fairly and pick one that I believe is good enough and committed enough to go on and lift the trophy. I also promise that the white jacket will be reappearing !!
I would like to ask anyone interested in playing to PM me by clicking on the earlier link and let me know the following.....
1. your name
2. your poker background
3. Any tournaments, etc.... won this season
4. what qualities you think you can bring to the team.
Please remember that this is a TEAM event and players should bear that in mind and also remember that they will be playing a series of SNG,s plus heads-up games on each day (plus tighty"s SNG "specials" afterwards......probably ! )
I intend taking all of the above into account when choosing my final squad and I intend to announce this early in the first week in August.
I will only consider those players who contact me though and also remember that if you are registered to play any other events at DTD on the Thursday and/or Friday, you would not be able to play these and play for England aswell.
COME ON ENGLAND !!

Congratulations Brian, GL to you and your team.

Congratz on your position Brian - as a guy who wears the St George Flag on his heart, you so deserve it!!
England FTW!!
-
Congrats brian on being captain, as to england winning BOOOOOOOOOO
Wales for 1st place LOL :P :P
-
Congrats on the captaincy Brian,,,goodluck in picking the team im sure it wont be easy,,,,come on england !!!!!!
-
Thanx for all the messages guys. It wont be easy, but I knew that anyway !
-
The toughest job in poker - selecting & managing the England team. Reminds me of several other games, but at least you only have to worry about who to include and managing the millionaire players, and don"t have underlying quality problems. I can think of numerous players who would be good picks for the team. Indeed, with the vast majority of APAT players being English, a case could be made for England having more than one team (England Red & England Blue?), though I guess that one won"t take off. Best of luck with managing everyone"s expectations.
-
Actually you have a good point there, no harm in England A and England B for next season.
We could then ditch one of those small time two bit countries that don"t have a cat in hells chance, like Poland for example.
-
So should England get 2 football teams in the World Cup to give them a better chance at winning that too?
Not trying to have a dig at their performance or indeed at the chances of England winning the APAT event, just trying to make my point that 1 nation having twice the chance of any another to win the event seems very wrong IMO.
-
Have to agree with Stuart on this one......though that doesn"t make selection any easier.
I do believe we are going to be a VERY strong side this season though, even if holiday"s have hit my plans :)
-

They do it in bobsleigh ;D
APAT is perhaps 60-70% English, but only 4 people get to represent us. There are many sports out there that allow more than 1 national team in order to represent the depth of talent/subscription to the sport.
It"s at least worthy of consideration even if it goes nowhere.
I also believe that with such a large pool of talent to choose from it"s wrong to pick anyone that represented England last year, to represent England this year. i.e. a once every 2 years at most rule would be a fair way of giving more of the good players their chance.

Go Andrew
someone will bite

OK I"ll bite.

Personally I disagree. I represented my country last year, and have duly sent the captain a request for a place this year. I have based this on my recent performances and form. OK, not much APAT specific form at the moment, but then there hasn"t been too much APAT (live) opportunity for me yet this season, but my general poker form is miles ahead of where I was last year. That said, I did consider not applying as I didn"t want to put Brian in a difficult position given that he and I are friends, and no doubt some people will claim intentions are wrong if I were lucky enough to be selected. However I want this as badly as anyone else, so chose to go ahead with an application.
To state that English selection should be based on every second year only is plain wrong - Most other teams include many repeat selections year on year, and some teams are identical year on year - why should we be penalised for being English?
Given that the total player base of APAT is hugely biased toward England (~25%+?), it does not seem wrong to consider breaking England into North and South. That said, whilst providing fairer opportunity, it would dilute the patriotism angle.... there is only one England, and can therefore only be one England team.
-
Congratulations Brian, man for the job. Av a gud un, i c u there matey. :)
-
why should we be penalised for being English?
True - you"ve suffered enough already.
-

Personally I disagree.
Of course you disagree Steve, that"s hardly le shock de la jour. But how disappointed would you be if you had been generally quite successful in APAT terms yet overlooked for someone who took their place last year? Wouldn"t that frustrate you slightly?
As for the other nations - yes some people are a shoe in because of numbers but that could be balanced by some nations having and A + B teams and perhaps having some of the smaller nations either combined or compete every two years depending on previous years placing - I dunno (just rambling ill thought out suggestions perhaps) but I believe something should be done to ensure that more of the top English guys get their chance to play in such a unique competition.
So my bottom line suggestion is either restrict appearances or give us a B team next season.

FWIW I have withdrawn my application. Personally I don"t see an issue - restricting selection because someone played the last game is something that happens at my 11 year old son"s cricket club - surprised people think it should happen at an international tournament event like this, but c"est la vie.... I would hate to be selected, and then find that I"m resented for it, or that Brian"s selection process is questioned.... Last thing I want to do is put Brian in any difficult situation, so to ease any pressures, I have taken myself out of his equation, and will focus on the other WCOAP events. Disappointed, but wish whoever does make the England team all the best.
England FTW

Personally, I disagree...and not having a shot either way, I have no axe to grind.
Selection is at the discretion of the captain and previous selection should not be a bar to being re-selected in any way shape of form.
I don"t think A & B teams are warranted either unless you are going to offer every country the option.

This is fantastic news. As a total unbiased, neutral, Welshman, I think the fact that one of the better, proven English players is withdrawing from selection process is brilliant. ;)
On a serious point, Brian has been selected as England captain due to a number of factors which include his standing in the APAT community, his poker experiences and his passion for the English team.
To think that anyone would want to hinder his already difficult task further by suggesting he should have stipulations within his selection process really baffles me.
The APAT team event is a unique event, pitting country versus country and if you ask any of the players that have played before about it, they will only speak in glowing terms about the pride and honour of representing their country.
To suggest England should have additional teams, or players that have represented their country before shouldn"t be allowed to put themselves forward seems totally ridiculous to me.
If Brian feels that having Steve in the team would be best for the England cause, then what"s the problem ? You have to trust in Brian"s judgement in the same way all of the countries trust in their captains picks.
They are not always right, and some of the past captains have said if they had their time again, they may pick differently (Well, that"s what Dewi said when he picked me in Season 2 ;D ), but they have been chosen to select a team to represent their country, and they should have the option to pick anyone they feel is right for the job.
It is impossible to please everyone, but at least, let"s give the captains a fair chance to make the best selections they feel they can.
That is all. ;D

Best players should play,,end of !!!,,,,and im sure the captains will pick what they think is the best team,,,,steve,,i dont know you,but your record and your apat commitment speaks for itself,,put your name back in,,,dont let them wind u up,,, lol
-
Steve,
make yourself AVAILABLE for selection, it"s hard enough for Brian to select a winning team without the availability of all players.
FWIW I"m a fish so am not available for probably a bad selection :)

Only if they could get all 22 players on the pitch at the same time.
-
disappointed that you have dropped out, steve and am posting to ask you to reconsider. I"m sure Brian will as well.
People really need to get a grip with this event
My various opinions on this are a bit of a ramble so I will number them (coz I is a maffs teacher init)
1. Selection Criteria - really glad that this has been canned. Running good in the few APAT MTT events that have taken place this year is no justification for playing in a team event. It should only be a consideration so that people following the event, may know a few names. The format is full ring and HU STTs, so players wanting to play would be expected to have evidence of proficiency in that format of the game. The only real evidence is from online play, which is unfair on live "specialists" but given the number of comps online players play compared to live players and the lack of difference between live and online STTs, online records seem a decent way to sort out the many candidates wanting to play.
2. Old Pals Act - It is a bit inevitable that a bit of this will happen in selecting the teams. I remember suggesting the only Italian Player to FT an APAT event to Luca last year after he had selected his team and he had never heard of him. I do find it childish though that players use phrases like "clique", "closed shop" etc.. to rant about their non selection. I"m pretty sure every captain wants to win and should be trusted to pick a team that can deliver.
3. Players who have played before but don"t want to put the captain under pressure because he"s a Pal - dont know where this came from tbh, but IMO if a player is good enough then pick them - whatever their other history or background says.
4. 2 teams for England!! - I genuinely thought andrew was trying to yank everyone"s chain with this, but it appears he was serious (I levelled myself LOL). To say it is merely a suggestion for future consideration really overvalues the idea. I cant think of any sport which allows more teams than others based on population or participation. I dont remember China having any teams in the world cup let alone 2 teams for the qualification period. I know Bobsleigh teams have more teams from other countries, but that option is available for all teams, providing they meet the olympic qualifying criteria. To then suggest it for a game that is so reliant on luck and not see that it therefore doubles that countries chance of success is very blinkered IMO.
Bottom line (and I have to do it in his style)
Get BEHIND Brian. He is the CAPTAIN and NOT a figurehead. He is an EXCELLENT choice and we should trust him to do the job in ALL its capacities. If people are not picked, then FFS get behind the team
COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!

Good to know that people have such strong opinions on this subject !
I am not going to say too much yet, but I will say this.
I know that I run the BCPC and that you all know that too but I would never let my position in that organisation influence any of my choices relating to my position of England Captain.
Having said that it has given me the chance to view first hand some very good poker players of which I class Steve Redfern as one.
I decided on my selection process early on and Steve Redfern was one of the applicants. Steve is a member of the BCPC, as are certain other people who have applied to play in the team.
I didn"t tell ANY of these people to apply. They applied because they believe they are good enough to be in the team.
If I believe they are good enough then I will choose them and if anyone thinks I have chosen them because I know them then please feel free to say so on here. I won"t take offence (I am pretty thick-skinned ) and we are all entitled to our opinion. Even if yours would be wrong.
Let me just quote you a few facts here.....
"In last year"s team event I was undefeated on the first day, winning all of my STTs and HU games, and then ended up after two days as one of the top scoring players overall"
"I was part of the champion APAT team in January 2010, and of the 8 man team, was one of the 3 who contributed the points".
"I am around $10k in profit since March"
"I am passionate about my poker beyond measure, am equally passionate about England, and suspect I"m one of those most passionate about APAT. Pulling on the England shirt last year was up there with the birth of my kids etc - and I desperately want the chance to repeat".
" I have a sponsorship deal playing SNGs, which is where I am best profitable"
I wont tell you who this is. But does this sound like a player you want in your team......especially at a tournament that has a mix of SNG"s and Heads-Up matches ?
Whoever it is, he has put forward a strong case for selection, wouldn"t you say ?
He wont know for around 10 days if he has been picked as I will announce my team starting on MONDAY AUGUST 2ND and announce 1 player per day thereafter.
And it will be a team that I believe will be good enough to win the Tournament.
COME ON ENGLAND !!
-

I like your style Sir...but can you do me a favour please?
Announce them in BLOCK CAPITALS. ;D

Great to see the responses. FWIW they don"t change my opinion, but I accept I"m in the minority (of 1 as far as I can tell lol).
Firstly I thought MintTrav"s suggestion of an England B team made sense, whatever his motivations for suggestion were (being Irish for one and a consumate wind-up merchant to boot). However, things can only change if people show their support, which is what I was trying to do. Nobody agrees so end of.
Secondly I thought that there was merit in the suggestion that to limit appearances would allow more quality players their chance, with such a big pool to choose from. Of course I risked offending the four players from last year but it was just a suggestion, not a jibe at the four players themselves. Any such rule introduced is going to hinder someone, but that shouldn"t be a reason to not make the suggestion (or voice the opinion).
Thirdly, for the record, I"ve got no axe to grind myself as I haven"t applied for the team nor did I apply last year (when my results show a good reason to be picked then I"m sure I will apply). My motivation was purely one of getting more of our quality players involved.
I completely accept that there"s no appetite for change and as such I"m stunned that Steve withdrew his application. So I too urge him to resubmit on the basis that the choice is down to Brian, and we all know that Brian is man enough to make his own decisions. Friendship won"t come into it.
COME ON ENGLAND!

Pick me for positive discrimination/affirmative action reasons.

Firstly I thought MintTrav"s suggestion of an England B team made sense, whatever his motivations for suggestion were.
Oh, has it caused some disharmony? Sorry about that - I wouldn"t wish to disrupt your preparations. Just thought I"d lob in a sparkler to see what happened, but didn"t imagine it would set off the fireworks box. Result! Let"s hope the tournament goes just as well.

I think the Irish team could do with some fresh faces............................ :D ;D :P

i"m not applying as i don"t have any APAT form but surely anything other than picking people on current merit is just plain wrong, irrespective of whether they have been in the team for the last x number of years.
a captain has been picked and surely it is his responsibility to make the choices and leave it at that.
oh and come on England
-
Have not put my name forward as I am rubbish, but I would like to say
COME ON ENGLAND
-
I would be picking my best team availbale regardless of if i know them or not, or if they have played before as the 4 picked to play for England should be the best four English apat players you have regardless of if they have made many apat this season. There are many good players to pick from and i could say 20 or 30 players that all have a good shout for why they should be in the team, but the pick comes down to the captain and good luck to you Brian.
But i would just say one thing i would not be picking players who have sponsorship deals to play poker, as i think this would go against the apat spirit and would question there involvement in playing in any apat comps never mind the England team, hope they have informed apat of this said sponsorship deal.
last year England team had some lets just say 2 borderline selection in it in blatch and john miller, i have nothing against john but i believe he was pro at the time and blatch a pro gambler and pro grimmer, so i would hope we don"t go down the win at all cost as after all it did not work last year
-
I believe Brian"s "scouting" mission at the Sky Poker Tour yesterday was a huge success.
He came across lots of players who got it in bad and then won the hand, which is just the sort of players he is going to want for the team if England are to take this down. ;D
-
But i would just say one thing i would not be picking players who have sponsorship deals to play poker
After your Betfair sponsorship last night does this include you ::)

I would just like to say Thank-You to all of the players who have applied to play for England this year. I have first-hand experience of playing against most of you and the others I have been doing my research and found out all that I needed to know.
Now then, to the team selection.
A bit like Fabio, Sven, Tom, Dick and Harry......whoever I select I am going to upset someone, somewhere, if not everyone, everywhere, so while I will announce the rest of the team on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week, tonight I am announcing my first selection.
Whether this selection will be the most controversial is open to opinion, but I sense it will certainly get the forum talking.
My first selection for the APAT 2010 England team is............
BRIAN YATES {CAPTAIN}
I have thought long and hard about this, but at the moment I feel that I am in the form of my life, especially over the last few weeks. Choosing myself was not a decision I came to lightly and while I am sure there will be people out there that may believe that this is wrong, I would like to think that whoever was Captain would have been giving me serious consideration as a player.
I am current Online Rankings Champion, still current APAT Irish Champion, hold 3 Gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze APAT medals. Last season I was 4th in points scored overall at the European Championships and top scorer for England.
My heads-up play of late has been outstanding and that has helped sway me in making this decision.
I hope that I do not upset too many people in making this choice but I actually feel that it is the right one for the team and ultimately, there is no "I" in team.
I will lead from the front and yes......the white jacket will be making an appearance too :)
OK guys......now you can begin the debate. I am off for a weekend in Benidorm and will catch up on my return on Monday when I will announce my 2nd choice for the team.
COME ON ENGLAND !!
-
Defo the right decision Brian, good luck, I know you will hope to go a few places better than last year.
-
Never really understood why the home nations should have a non-playing captain, when the "emerging" nations don"t.
Don"t think you need to qualify your selection in any way at all, and whoever was captain, you should be up there at the top of the selection list.
Same goes for Paul Mac in the Welsh team!
England FTW

Call me pedantic ( and God knows I am ) but what countries do you include in this category Steve. I ask because the best definition I could find was....
"An emerging nation is country that is on its way to becoming an industrialized nation. An emerging nation is a developing country that has achieved some industrial capacity eg: Brazil and South Korea"

Would have been on my teamsheet, so no reason why you shouldn"t be on your own IMO

The second choice for the 2010 England team goes to........
PAUL HAYCOCK (ADIDAP)
Paul is in terrific form in live events this season, having racked up a 2nd place in the £100 event at the UKIPT at Coventry in April for £2.3k and a month later winning a £250 GUKPT side event at the same venue for £4.5k.
Only a few weeks ago he won the £100 freezeout at "The Vic" for just over £2k and was also 11th in the GUKPT London in 2009.
His APAT pedigree includes Gold in the Northern European Online Open and Silver in the Welsh Online events this season to currently place him 6th in the Online Rankings, giving him a shot at taking my Title away !!
I look forward to pitching Paul in at the deep end at Nottingham at the end of this month and I am sure that he will do his country proud.
Welcome to the fold Paul.
-
Don"t know what to say. I"m as surprised as I am delighted, with so many excellent players you had to choose from.
This is such brilliant news! Looking forward to it already...
Eng-er-land ftw,
Paul.
BTW, the adidap name was retired with the move to Betfair 2. I"m plain old Pears27 on there now too.
-
Never really understood why the home nations should have a non-playing captain, when the "emerging" nations don"t.
Don"t think you need to qualify your selection in any way at all, and whoever was captain, you should be up there at the top of the selection list.
Same goes for Paul Mac in the Welsh team!
England FTW
Cheers Steve
-
Well done Paul, good luck at DTD.
-
I have been doing my research and found out all that I needed to know.
I too have done my research, and i can"t for the life of me find a link for yourself being remotely Welsh, Brian. So excellent choice mate, and with Paul also. Good job and good luck. :)
-
Excellent choice. Never again will I sit at Paul"s cash table with him on my left - demon!!
What did "adidap" stand for anyway paul?
-
Paul Mac...... Mom"s name Jones.....Grandad"s name Llewellyn !!
My name......ENGLISH !!!!!!!
(in CAPITALS !!!!! )

Time to announce player number 3 for my 2010 England team and that player will be ......
STEVE REDFERN
Steve, I am sure, will be viewed by many as a controversial choice but as I explained in my earlier post, his selection has been made purely on his credentials as a poker player.
At this moment in time, Steve is an amateur player and is, as such, available to play in APAT events and as one of the best SNG players, he is a shoe-in for my team.
Obviously, I get to see plenty of him in action live on a regular basis at the BCPC but for all the talk of him being a luckbox, he is an extremely good analytical player and most of his actions are made for all the right reasons (GUKPT Walsall events excepted !! )
Steve played for the successful APAT team in Manchester in January and was a member of the 2009 England team that finished 3rd in last season"s European Championships and on both occasions contributed significantly to the cause and was a "team" player in both events.
I know that he will be a proud member of this team and will bring his A-game to every table that he plays on and at the end of the day, I believe that every other side wish that he was available to play for them.
Hopefully, Steve will now accept his place in my team.
COME ON ENGLAND.
-
Well done Steve, I know you"ll be chuffed.
-
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE - Mucho congrats
-
Clear cut choice imo. See you there Steve (assuming all that withdrawal nonsense is out of the way).
To answer your question, adidap was just a slight variation on adidas which a lot of people (wrongly) think stands for "all day I dream about sport". I expect even someone from Kidderminster can work out the modification at the end ;)
-
Paul - when I was at school, it was usually After Dinner I Did A Sh.. and assumed you had taken P., as the polite version :)
Cheers Bri - needless to say, chuffed to bits, and can"t wait..... hope I can do the selection justice!! I know I was putting you in a tough spot - thanks for the confidence!
Bring it on - England FTW!
-
Looking Good England, looking very Good
Top selections so far apart from Steve ;D
-
Deserved imo. Well done Steve

-
Just the one untried gamble selection so far.
No gamble at all Paul... you just need the rob of the green ;)
-
And finally, it is time to announce my 4th pick for the 2010 England team and that place goes to.........
CHARLES MASON
Charles is the current APAT World Champion and will be defending his Title at DTD but before that he will recording a unique double by helping England to the World Title on Thursday and Friday !
He is a keen SNG player and has a terrific success rate when reaching Final Tables, having cashed in tournaments both in Europe and the USA.
Charles will be a great asset to the team and I am sure he will be up there with the top points scorers at the end of Day 2.
So our England team reads...
PAUL HAYCOCK
CHARLES MASON
STEVE REDFERN
BRIAN YATES
I am very happy with that and I think we will do well this year. There is also the added fact that as we all hail from the Midlands, we can understand each other too.
Possibly :)
COME ON ENGLAND !!
-
Good luck Brian, to you and your team.
-
Likewise to you and yours Stuart......it should be a great few days :)
-
Good Luck Team England..See you at DTD
-
Now that my team is chosen, I would like to say that I was absolutely amazed at the amount of people who applied to play this year.
You may be thinking "wow....were there hundreds ?"
Well no, there were........ermmm..........just nine...........and FIVE of those were BCPC players !!
I really found this astonishing.
I was expecting an absolute flood and it never materialised. Without mentioning any names, I was disappointed to lose one player to holidays, who I would have given a lot of thought to, and several players I hoped would apply, didn"t.
I wasn"t going to ask anyone as I wanted team players who wanted to be there.
As to those who I did not select, 2 players were VERY close to being selected. I changed my mind several times and came very close to choosing one player ahead of myself, but as I have told him today, maybe I took the "easy" option in the end.
The players who were from the BCPC who didn"t get selected gave me a very difficult task indeed ! Obviously, I know them all well and do rate them highly but it would have been very tough to have picked an all-BCPC side for England....even though everyone knows we would have walked it :)
As it is, I hope everyone will see that I tried to make what I considered the best decisions for us as a team and hopefully I can be proved right over the 2 days. Only time will tell.
If you want to come and tell me what a **** I am at DTD, feel free to do so. Everyone else does !!
COME ON ENGLAND !!
-
CHARLES MASON
Ty so much for this Brian, its a true honour and I promise to do my best for the cause! First live team poker I have played but given the extreme fun we get from the battling and banter in our online leagues this is surly going to be a blast for players and spectators alike!
Simply can"t wait, just one thought comes to mind, will the official "England Tailors" manage to err.. make .. err.. allowances on the generous side ;)
Oh and "COME ON ENGLAND"!
-
I wasn"t going to ask anyone as I wanted team players who wanted to be there.
There"s plenty of us out here that would love to be there and who consider themselves team players. However, our results have to back up our application, per your initial request, and so to some extent I think many people de-selected themselves on that basis. So you really shouldn"t be surprised at the lack of entries, please don"t assume that it is a lack of enthusiasm for the team.
As it is you"ve got a team of winners who will push very hard for the title. Good luck to all of you.
COME ON ENGLAND!!
-
Great team well done glglglglglgl

Don"t know how many applied last year but I was surprised at the low numbers.
-
Brian,
Thanks for taking the time to send me a personal message regarding your team selection, I appreciate you doing that.
Best of luck to yourself, Steve,Charles, and Paul.
COME ON ENGLAND!

Firsly i would like to say good luck to Bri and the England team , but want to have a little rant! which is my opinion and not a slur on Bri who had a very tough job to do!
I think for such a great oppurtunity and with a wealth of talent to pick from different players should get the chance to take on the rest of the world therefore steve and bri should have let other players have a chance and the honour of wearing the 3 lions. I think the other players who applied would have been capable of doing just as good a job. I realise there wasnt many applicants this surely must of been because they thought too many applicants not much chance etc. Also as a captain / manager surely you should be watching the other games weighing up the weak links or which of his players would fair better against other team members( obviously depending on how tourney run). So the responsibilty of the captainship is not compromised making game or decions as captain under extra pressure. And can solely concentrate on whats best for team.
I believe there is at least 15 england players who could easily do well with that little but of luck we all need, so why not give more of them a shot.
I still beleive England have a great team and a great chance of winnig it but would have just a good chance with fresh blood .
This is not me being bitter for not getting in by the way , i have texted bri and told him i was doing this and he has accepted my opinions like the top bloke and player he is .
Last but not least come on england !!

Making it easy for the rest of us . ;)

England now have a quality team, and have a great chance of winning, and under Brians leadership I wouldn"t be in the least bit suprised if they did win it.
As regards Steve"s argument that there are many players who could do a good job and would love a crack, this is a tricky one, the captain is selected and then it is up to him to pick his best team a not just give other players ago. I actually feel that is what the other team event is for and that the "APAT" team should be made up of players who support APAT but haven"t had a look in elsewhere, but will that happen this year as they are defending the trophy? ???

mikey not sayin pick inferior players as i said there players just as good and with the luck / run of cards they would be just as strong if not stronger with the added prove apoint thinking

Pretty much agree with this.
Given the format is what it is for this tournament then the home nations will always struggle the most to satisfy the players.
As much as we might hate to admit it, due to the nature of the game on any given day any apat member can outperform any other so really who actually represents their country becomes pretty irrelevant.
I"d much rather see a more inclusive method of selection for each team than the captain decides as it will always be an influenced decision and instantly alienates some proportion of members.
Is there any reason that in future years members could not be chosen from either a single qualifying tournament, ballot or any other random method giving everyone the opportunity to play?
-
Appreciate Scouse"s comments and as I have told him myself, leaving him out was difficult.
Both he and Dan Owston are extremely tough players to read and to play against and bring a mindset to the APAT tables that is matched by few others. They also bring a volume level matched by no others !!
I have huge respect for both of them and enjoy there company. I jush wish I could pick more than 4 in the team.
As for the selection process, as long as it is the same for every team, then maybe a tourney is the way to go and then appoint a non-playing Captain (as Scouse suggests) at a later date ?
Anyway, whoever or whatever criteria is used, we can never please everyone.....human nature.

good luck england or is it dads army woop woop

Sod waiting "til DTD. Can i just call you a ****** now ??
I"m disappointed, as i was expecting a mediocre team... much like the one that showed up at the world cup.
However, form is temporary, CLASS, is permanent.
That is why TEAM CYMRU will destroy you.....at any cost.
Well done all selected, but be wanred. By the time we"re finished with you, you"ll ALL wish you were Welsh. .

Reign it back in Dan or you"re going to get yourself withdrawn. We have a lot of players playing an APAT for the first time in this event and I don"t want them to think we"re all a shower of ****s.
Thanks.

Agreed, just friendly banter between us and the old enemy ;-), apologies. Anyway, i was going fot the word footb there :)

Good luck to Brian and what looks like a great team.

G.L Brian and team england.
-
Pretty sure Dan had double figures for applicants last year. Unsure why it"s dropped off this year
Well over 20.
Not sure why it"s dropped this year. Maybe there was an "APAT lull" with the last "National" being in Estonia and not as well represented by English players and there wasn"t as much attention surrounding the event? Possibly also a correlation between the summer holidays and the application period - or even the dates the event is on?
Best of luck to Brian and the team. I"m sure you"ll do far better than Capello and his squad. Bring it home!!
-
Oh, and I"m sure Wales will do better than they did last year.
;)

Not to me it isn"t John.
-
Really Bri?
I wasn"t going to ask anyone as I wanted team players who wanted to be there.
There"s plenty of us out here that would love to be there and who consider themselves team players. However, our results have to back up our application, per your initial request,, and so to some extent I think many people de-selected themselves on that basis. So you really shouldn"t be surprised at the lack of entries, please don"t assume that it is a lack of enthusiasm for the team.
^This^
Have to agree with Andy here. You possibly took too many people out of the equation with a results orientated selection criteria. Most of the other obvious reasons hols/work/cost/logistics were movable objects with an England call up.
You had to have your own criteria for selection, captain"s perogotive, and fully understand a respect that, however, limiting your selection pool massively then being suprised at such few applicants, suprised me tbh.
-
Sorry I missed the boat on this one but I thought selection criteria was to be "results" based and as I have only played one live event this year I didn"t think my results merited me applying to be selected for the team. I"m sorry to hear only 9 people put their names forward. Having been the acting captain in the first year I can definitely say it is an honour and fun to play for your country.
So for next year I am definitely putting my name forward either to play for the team or to act as captain, always willing to help in anyway I can. But I"m hoping that next year more people will get the chance to represent their country. Its an opportunity that few people ever get the chance to do and an honour when given the chance to do so.
-
Top Side, Well done Brian!!
I fully expect the title to be kept on home soil by the time I touch down in a few weeks time.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!
-
I can see how pre-qualifying applications by looking at results reduces the field captains have to choose from. Trouble is, the risk of not doing that is that you could easily see the same team being picked every year. If there"s no results element to the selection, how can captains show they"ve been objective in how they"ve picked the team?
But I would say that wouldn"t I...
-

You"ve missed the point. Brian seems baffled as to why he got so few applicants. Nobody is saying that making it results based was wrong - that"s his perogative as captain. But making it results based was the reason he got a few rather than a load of applicants. He would probably have ended up with the same team either way - this way at least he had fewer people to say no to!
Good luck in the team we"ll all be cheering you on.
COME ON ENGLAND!
-
No, I do understand the point. I was just picking up on the earlier "took too many people out of the equation with a results orientated selection criteria" point (not yours, I know). I just think it"s better than the alternative.
-
It should of been the best players who applied, simple as that. That is the only way you have the best chance of winning. I think brian did a good job of the team.
-
Let me just quote you a few facts here.....
You never told us whose application this is from, Brian.
There are only three possibilities, so I"ve been trying to work it out - was it Blatch?
-
Seems to me everyone is agreeing,,,selection has to be based on results and those who have not faired well of late or are not available have not applied.I think the hardest job is picking the team,,,some good players out there !!!
COME ON ENGLAND !!!

Bitterly disappointed.
Gutted, but content in the knowledge that I couldn"t have done a great deal differently. The few decent hands I had were outdrawn - lost every single race, and couldn"t even win the two 80/20s I managed to get in with. The whole team ran so bad it actually become comical - the trend was set on the first round of the first day when Charles got in with JJ v 55 and lost.... and that followed on for the rest of the team.
Personally, felt the pressure from the off given recent discussions around repeat selection - realy wanted to prove a point, but frankly things couldn"t have gone much worse.
Bad beats and outdaws aside - this was another fantastic APAT experience, and am chuffed to bits for Paul and the boyos. Shared tables with some of the Welsh team along the way - what a great bunch of guys, and deserving winners.

Watched a lot of your games Steve, and to be fair you all ran hugely bad...five overpairs cracked by underpairs isn"t helpful!
-
Just to echo Steve"s post, I thoroughly enjoyed the event despite the result. Recovered from a personal perspective on day 2, but team poker is such a different dynamic and I"m just gutted for the boys. Didn"t play anything like as badly as the wooden spoon would suggest. Even the cash on Thursday night followed in the same vain. What a time to run horribly.
Fully expect us to put in a magnificent showing in the main now. Here"s hoping...
Thanks again to Brian for my selection, and huge congratulations to Paul, Dan and the two Welsh lads I didn"t get to meet. The balance of good spirit with a bit of needle was spot on ;)

Another fantastic experience over this long weekend. Great to see old friends and meet many new ones.
The team event from our point of view was hugely disappointing, not that we could have done much differently than we did. As Tighty said, 5 times in 6 sit-N-Go"s we lost to an underpair. I guess our suckout"s will come later down the line.
I would like to thank the APAT guys for the chance to Captain the team and although I doubt that I will get a 3rd shot at playing in this event, that wont stop me trying to come back and exact revenge next year.
Congrats to Paul and the Boyos, all top lads although it is hard to find a more deserving Captain than Mr McGuinness. I have huge respect for this guy and nobody deserved success more.
Also, the Welsh were my "Team to beat" as I told my team before we started on Thursday. The main reason for that was one Dan Owston, who many regard as a loose cannon, but who showed that he is anything but that when the situation requires it.
I played against both Rudders and Dylan during the festival too and both can talk a good game and back it up on the felt.
All in all, the best team won.
Good on ya lads.

Just wanted to add a some thoughts, firstly a few thanks:
- All at APAT for excellent organisation
- DTD for their top notch professional delivery of a great competition.
- To Brian, thanks so much for your invitation, truly honoured just so disappointed I couldn"t deliver.
- To the team, amongst all the banter and beats it felt so good to be part of the England team, we lived and died through the experience together unbowed.
It was my first live experience of live team play, its quite different, I would recommend it to everyone, really consider putting yourself forward next year as you will have a blast.
Well done to the Medalists, the Welsh team fully deserved their success.

Guys, well what can I say. Most of you know me and you know there is nothing I"d like more than to take the pi** out of your position at the wcoap. But it ain"t going to happen. I have never seen any one run so bad when racing or even when your ahead. Obviously not indicative of your normal individual play. I know your all gutted about your performance but don"t be. As you said several times you got it in good and that"s really all you can do. Really unlucky lads. Best of luck next year. Team Canada

Hi guys, thank you for your kind words. As i have stated elswhere you ran so bad throughout the event, and as Brian states,"You couldn"t have done anything differently" Do not beat yourselves up, you are all excellent players and i know neither myself nor the Welsh team have anything but total respect for you guys. I really admire the way you have all handled the situation, and anybody for any country that played could not have withstood the neg variance over the event that you guys suffered. Thank You also for your support when you were no longer in the running, very much appreciated. This is the true Apat spirit, and you four are glowing with it.
Hats off to England and the very best of luck for the future.
On behalf of team Wales
