Title: APAT Northern European Amateur Championships: Live Update
Post by: TightEnd on July 30, 2010, 13:14:21 PM
Tomorrow afternoon James "jbworldwide" Barber and I will be bringing you coverage of the APAT Northern European Amateur Poker Championships from the extremely pleasant Olympic Casino here in Tallinn, Estonia.

James and I have come from Heathrow via Helsinki, then hopped across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn.

We"re two hours ahead of you here so play will begin lunchtime tomorrow for you. Stand by for many mis-spellings of Baltic names, Gerard Smyth stories and tales of Tallinn nightlife

We"ve got 130 names registered for the event so far, including Nine intrepid UK travellers.

Please join us tomorrow for what could well be fun and games. For me anyway. You lot can merely titter in the background.

Desperately tried to convince the missus that I could play this one, then fly down to Cyprus to meet up with the wife and kids at the start of the family holiday - she was having none of it!  can"t imagine why!

Good luck to those travelling...

Although I final tabled the £35 ish 1rebuy. I went out in 9th relatively short utg shove with 1010, got looked up by AJ and QQ and QQ scooped.

oh well, can"t do much about that.

The other UK players are currently out, seeing the sights. there are already stories! I am sure we will hear more tomorrow and keep you all entertained throughout tomorrow.

It"s been a long day, so off to bed.

Make sure you are here tomorrow for what will be a very interesting day.  ;D

So, a hearty breakfast inside me this morning I set off exploring

Right next to the casino is "Police Park", so called because back in the days of Soviet Occupation the Police would lunch in this park next to their headquarters.

Designed to Stalinist architectural styles in the 1950s, with a fixed grid pattern, this park contains 46 different types of tree. If I counted correctly.

This park has a national significance as it was here that Soviet soldiers massacred innocent protestors during the first occupation at the turn of the 20th century. This statue commemorates that occasion

Five minutes later and I reach one of the old Towns. Tallin is a real mix of Soviet functionality and old character untouched since medieval towns. There are three "old quarters", a vibrant port and an awful lot of drab buildings in between

Here was my first sight of the old parts....

The scene is a packed Tallinn Town Hall

Hundreds are gathered for the announcement of twin Cities for Tallinn

Major excitement already as the likes of Gothenburg, Malmo, Riga, Moscow, Venice and Vilnius has been announced.

Only the announcement of the UK City awaits.

The mayor rises to the lectern, golden envelope in hand

Beside him, one councillor turns to another

"Great, England. Time for Jiggy-Jiggy on our holidays. Wonder what we"ll get? Something with cultural significance, with a history of overcoming suppression perhaps? Religious overtones maybe?"

"Who cares?" replies the other "As long as it has strip clubs and I get to meet Cheryl Cole, wa-hey!"

"I prefer Clare Balding" replied the first, a little too loudly as eyebrows arch in the first row

The Mayor opens the envelope

"I am pleased to announce that Tallinn, Estonia is to be Twinned with Dartford, Kent"

An audible "wtf?" rises in the auditorium as aides scramble for their maps.

The Mayor clears his throat

"Lets all trust Des Duffy" he says "He got us Venice and Moscow, Vilnius and Gothenberg. Dartford will be special too"

Just as he finished he noticed a note attached to the card. It was from that renowned negotiator himself, la Duffy

"Sorry Jari" it said "Dartford was all they had left, even Walsall was taken. My invoice is in the post"

Today"s TDs are Priit Pajuumaa and the delightful Maria. Sadly Priit goes home at 6pm and Maria takes over. Toasty life for Tighty!

Priit tells me that in 2007 Bluff Europe magazine voted Tallinn as the "third hottest European Poker City" behind London and Dublin.

At the time Estonian casinos only had six poker tables total!

Since then though Estonian poker has taken off. Betfair Live, Ladbrokes and Expekt events have been hosted here, as well as Swedish Poker Championships and in August EPT Tallinn comes to town, hosted by and managed by Priit and his team. The Estonia National Champiopnships attracted 70 runners two years ago, and this year nearly 300.

In terms of a player base he reckons Estonia has about 30,000 poker players and it is growing all the time.

Estonia itself, and the casinos within it have had a rough time, very impacted by the credit crunch affecting their newer industries, but things are now on the way back up.

The tournament itself is running over two floors and we"re based downstairs. Sweeney will be on stair duty. Haven"t told him yet though

Already laid out on various tables, fresh fruit and soft drinks free of charge.

Betfair Poker banners up. Valets hovvering nearby

Good Morning UK/ Afternoon Estonia.

I have just sat down and I am loading some pictures up to show you my tour of Estonia, the Old town is a town full of character and some lovely architecture, and they play on the medieval heavily.

But before all that it was decided last night that the holiday anthem would be this;

With Stuart Ward claming that he is better than Axel Rose. Ger has the video, I"m sure you"ll decide when that surfaces.

I"ll give you a hint on the quality of the singing though, reports suggest there were 7 other people in the bar when they started and none at the end of the air guitar solo.

The countdown is on the screens 40 mins to go until the start.

For those of you following the updates a little game for you;

Considering the LAG approach by many in Vienna, how long do you think it will be until the first person and UK person goes out;

My guess is; 17 mins

Then how long until the first UK person goes out; 1hr 50 mins

Guess away; winner gets some pride  ;D

I went for a wander around Old Town today and visited a few of the churches, I took some pictures along the way to help you visualise the place.

I do recommend a visit here, the daytime is lovely, and apparently the night life is lively.

So on walking about 10 mins from the casino/hotel, you come to the entrance of the old town...

Then walking along the streets all the cafes have outside furniture for you to enjoy the atmosphere and there is a strong medieval theme, with many people dressed up in costume.

So I keep walking and start heading up towards the top of Tallinn and  a first slice of imposing Russian architecture in the form of the Russian Orthodox Church, which is stunning inside (no pics allowed sorry)...

I then went across the road to the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin which had a wonderful altar...

and an ornate pipe organ as well, which was being played at the time. It gave the church a great atmosphere.

I then paid 50 Kroon to get a guided tour up the tower. It is the highest point in Tallinn Old Town. It was about 140 steps up a small winding staircase and I was tired when i got to the top, but the view was worth it.

In the picture below, the Russian Othordox church is on the left and the Estonian Parliament is the pink building with the tower on the right. The Estonian flag is raised everyday at 6am on the tower and lowered at midnight.

On the other side is a view of Tallinn coast and the port.

All the houses in the picture where left in a state of disrepair during the Soviet occupation and the Estonians have spent time and money fixing them up.

Still many of the walls of the old medieval town exist and you can walk along some of them (I will be doing this tomorrow)

This picture may give you a little clue as to what I will be uploading later  ;) ..

Hope you enjoyed the tour.

Any requests for info I will gladly attempt to fulfil.

More on Estonia later.

Being a travel fanatic (even if I can"t indulge myself as often as I would like), I"d like to know the details & experience of your journey to Tallinn.

Well firstly I must try and get a go at the archery tomorrow morning!

The experience of the journey?

Well firstly Tallinn is not that accessible. Although there is a direct flight from the UK on a Thursday you can"t get back til the Tuesday. We therefore connected via Helsinki, others connected by Prague

Although there are some UK tourists here this all means that Tallinn retains an old world charm. Compared to Riga, which I went to on a stag three years ago, its far less UK-centric and less commercial.Apart from the places the lads go to I would imagine!

The journey London-Helsinki was 3 hours or so, via FinnAir. Very good

The hop from Helsinki to Tallinn was 20 minutes on a turboprop. We both said that we"d investigate doing the 45 minute fast ferry when going back on Monday. In this summer weather, looking down on groupings of Islands just in the Gulf to the south of Finland that looked a very appealing travel option. Something far better about looking out at sea rather than above the clouds!

As it was the hop across was fine, and this venue is 15 minutes from the airport

Estonia"s currency is the Kroon, which is replaced by the Euro on 1/1/11. So far prices don"t seem too bad. A bit more inflated than at home, but bearable.

One of the gallant Brit Nine is Chen Tam "Sunseekers" from Nottingham, here with his partner

He raises to 150 in level 1 in the hi-jack

Ivan Piskunov flat calls on the button. Impeccable English and he announces "I have this round thing". The button I assume

flop  ac ah 4c

Chen leads for 150

Ivan makes it 600

Chen makes it 1500

With a quizzical smile Ivan says "So my four is no good then?" and folds

Chen tells him "maybe, I was just finding out if you really did have the Ace"

Don Logan and Gerard Smyth have been drawn on the same table, and Ger has position on Logan which means Logan already sports a rueful smile of a man who knows his steals are going to be tricky today

Arriving on the scene to spot a  kh 7s ad 8d jd board I find Ger facing a bet on the river into a 2,000 chip pot

As he currently seems sober and not too hungover Ger retains his logical faculties and made a good call with  :as: 5c to take down the pot over  6d 6h.

Meanwhile upstairs we have our first two exits, being replaced by alternates as we speak.

Gary "gjp" Palmer managed to only lose 4,000 with K-K v A-A

He raised to 175 at 25-50, oppo made it 1600!!

Tank-call from Gary

flop Q-10-7 rainbow

Gary bet out hoping oppo had A-K

Oppo almost mucked, called

Checked to the end....

field might have some value then!

First UK player out at 1 hour and 40 mins.

Stuart "FatCatStu" Ward is out.

Stu started the hand with around 8.5k in chips

He then flopped a set of 10"s and an opponent on the table shoved with KK.

All good for Stu until a King popped up on the turn, and no help on the river.

He was taken out by Tanel Kalmo (Estonian) who now has around 25k

Tanel Kalmo has assumed a massive stack of 80k and is controlling the table at the moment.

Just being at his table though, they seem to be disliking the fact that he keep raising and stealing the blinds and a little fight back has begun. I say little because Tanel only lost 2k in the process. We"ll catch up more with his table later.

Someone tried it on last night at the local Shell club game.

First hand of the night.  I am on the button, I look down at  qd  qh.  Ohh Goodie..

Most of the table limp in for 100 big blinds..

Comes to me, "how much" is going through my mind, bearing in mind half the callers will not fold, so I made it 600, 3 called, and the last man before me, he is a pretty awful player, he thinks for a little while, says nothing, and shoves for 12k all in... This guys range aint gonna scare me in a million years, so I insta call..

The other guys who had already called the 600 are having a little moan and wanna see if their cards just changed to AA... And while I am waiting, the man before me, who had shoved in ahead of me, has all of his chips back out and just 100 chip sitting there.  So I ask him, what are you doing, you pushed all in, I called.  His reply was "I was only messing about!!!"..  GTFOH..!!!  I said to him, you cant do that, you have just pushed in which induced me to push in too.  So I asked for a decision..

He tried his best to try get off the hand but after 4 or 5 mins of argueing, they told him, its his own fault, he cant mess about like that, his chips are in.

He had 10 J of and although a 10 on the flop, there were also 3 kings up to the turn which basically killed him off.

This guy is a complete idiot and after 2-3 years of him playing poker, he still plays like a beginner who cant figure out hands.

I just had a fun hand on Stars...

I have 99, 200 blinds, make it 600, 2 callers....  flop 7 high, me first to act, so shove 2.5k on top the the 1.9k pot... first man folds, 2nd man goes into the tank, uses his 15 or 20 secs, then used the 60 seconds on his time button..  I am waiting...  waiting..  thinking he cant have a very good hand, eh is gonna fold... 2 secs remaining and he calls....

what did he have?  Any guesses?

So as promised earlier a continuation of my exploits this afternoon before the tournament.

As you may have noticed in the last picture of my tour of Tallinn earlier, there were some archery targets. Who can resist? for 150 Kroon I got 10 arrows, about £10, and I got to look semi cool for 10 mins  8)

So here are the pictures of my archery exploits;

Loading the bow, notice on my left arm a groovy arm protector and on my right hand leather finger protectors.

Team APAT power right here

And again

Well there wasn"t a buffet as such, free fruit and snacks offered all day and then some players ordered off the menu. Very nice menu too

Breakfast was fascinating. All you can eat buffet. Continental meats etc plus full cooked and lots of Scandi specialities. I indulged modestly. Only three helpings, as the bacon was cooked to within an inch of its useful life. Just how I like it, crispy to a frazzle.

One such odd speciality, at least to an English palate I would imagine, was Herrings in a Cucumber sauce. Wasn"t quite brave enough to try that at 9am, especially given a rather chequered recent history with Cucumber revelations.

So today, later on I had Pasta Carbonara with bacon strips. Very nice too

James had a Meat and Vegetable soup. I had this as a starter last night and with a thick consistency it was really more like a broth than a soup, though I am not sure where the dividing line between soup and broth starts?

One thing that is clear here is that "Fold" sounds a lot like "Call" in the Estonian accent. My head has been flicking everywhere as the play gets a bit shovey shovey.

Matt Ward has a new nickname choice; Granite or Gibraltar

Reports suggest he was on the SB and after it had folded around to him he folded 89 suited.

You decide which one you think is better  ;D

Payout Structure

Decided with the Venue director to use a standard payout structure, with his guidance. No long term reasoning, just easier to sort out this weekend with a lot of runners, and a lot of those (ie 171 out of 180) new to APAT.

An odd [better, imo] pay structure for an APAT event?

????

i think Alan is pointing out that the pay-out structure is not as flat as is usual in the UK based APAT comps.

Usually this is a function of having to fit in with the casino"s requirements.

It"s a matter of taste... I prefer the flatter payouts as it encourages play...but opinions differ.

Any more photies/reports on the Brits? Just in case final play slows down a little ;D

no chance of this for 2 reasons;

a) This final table is moving very fast
b) most of them are in the Old town now drinking

Payout Structure

Decided with the Venue director to use a standard payout structure, with his guidance. No long term reasoning, just easier to sort out this weekend with a lot of runners, and a lot of those (ie 171 out of 180) new to APAT.

Hardly valid reasons.

180 isn"t a lot of runners for an APAT tourney... and if the regular payout structure is "right", then it should be right every time. We were all "new to APAT" at one point.

Next thing you know they"ll making deals at the final table!

Well they are my reasons. Of course one listens to the TD who knows the local scene too, where he knows what the player base is looking for.

We did exactly the same in Vienna as it happens. Softly softly, spread the APAT word piece by piece!

And both Martin and Alexei fold.

Marrillis calls in the small blind

The push is for 60000 or so

Quite perturbingly I think Non Limp Bizkit folds  ac 9c face up in the big blind for about 1/10th of his stack

Rajko  7s 7h

Marrillis  kd qd

board jc 6s :2c: ad1 4s

Marillis has exited in 7th place, after a raise from Martin she button shoved with KQ suited diamonds.

Martin called the small amount with QJ suited hearts.

The flop was incredibly favourable for Martin with J96 with two hearts

the 3 of hearts on the turn sealed Marillis" fate.

Well played Marillis, taking home 11,167 EEK.

OK Heads up was brief but interesting

A tale of two hands really

In the first Hein was on the button, limped and Fedorov checked his option

the flop was  ad1 jd :3d: and Fedorov open shoved the lot in

Huge overbet

Hein is a thinking player.

He launched into a monologue

"You"d raise any Ace right? So no Ace. Maybe you have the King or Queen of diamonds? Maybe nothing. I have a pair and a flush draw"

He thought some more before eventually releasing

Next hand, Fedorov open shoves the lot from the button

Hein sees  ad1 6h in the big blind and I think it is reasonable for him to expect to be ahead compared to the loose chip-leader

He calls

Fedorov has  :as: ks though

the board runs out  jh 8c 7s js 4c and

that means that

Vadim Fedorov is our champion winning 59,400Estonian Krone, the Title and a GUKPT seat, medal and of course...significant media exposure. LOL, when I wake up  ;D

Right then I think that"s it from James and I

A few thank you"s. To Priit and his team here at the Olympic Tallinn, thank you very much. Superb organisers, wonderful dealers (the dealing standards had to be seen to be believed) and a really good poker room

To James, well done. Grand job for two days.

Thank you to everyone for watching and posting. I know it"s a bit different railing an event where you know so few of the contestants, and it"s appreciated that you do.

Lets hope some of the Baltic players introduced to APAT this weekend stick around.

From my perspective, this is a really interesting City. Maybe we"ll be back with APAT in the future. I"d recommend the trip if it is ever possible for you

Goodnight!

Just got home.

I have to say it was a cracking weekend, Casino was superb, the number of dealers seemed endless and they were all excellent.  Enjoyed my time at the table with Ger, and some aggressive Fin"s, two of which got to the final table so it was a tough day.

Estonia.... lovely..... women just gorgeous...........

Hotel and Casino just the ideal combined venue.

Great company once again, Ger awesome, Phil, Gary, Stu and Matt (Well Played Sir) the Stockton Massive, JP and finally Don R.

Hope APAT goes next year as I would love to go back and enjoy the delights of the Olympic Casino.

Paulie, you probably need to say DAMN IT a few more times, trip was a corker  ;D

Finally a big thank you to Tighty and James, another excellent APAT !!!

Except that I am still here having a beer in Lounge 24, a bar on the roof of the Tallinn SAS Raddison.

I will post fully on my return to the uk on Saturday but for now massive thanks to tighty and James for this weekend + top work by the casino. Thanks also to the rest of the Tallinn 9.

PS - Mika is playing in Tallinn tomorrow. He may have to amend his lyric to "Estonian girls, you are beautiful"

Its interesting to see how many variations of my name are present in the updates. The correct one is Aleksi Haapajoki.

Was really fun playing with you all in the APAT and hope there will be one next year.

The only complaint that I have is that the cash games end at 6am and breakfast doesn"t open till 7am ;D

Right first chance for a real post!!!

Phil really wasnt lying when he told me i had to do one of these!!

Fly fly fly fly. Arrive at hotel, check in. No Russian man.

Meet in bar, suck on some nice cold coq, realise Ger"s penchant for buying rounds, sup on some more coq.

The rest of that night is rather hazy apart from losing my sim card in completely inexplanable fashion!! Also a highlight was the talking to random, cigar providing bloke from Barnsely/Australia/Canada/the moon and his lass (no i STILL havent emailed her sister, as i have lost the email address, i run SO badly!!!!)

Poker was brief, railing all the lads was not!!! Cash on the saturday night, sitting next to a lad of 12 was interesting, Ger was rather thoruough of his questioning of the poor lad. James does a mean photoshop, that picture of Ger the short stack ninja is being made my background on my laptop!!!!

More beer, laughing at Ger declaring "James.....your ****....your ****" for no good reason!! James runs well for about the 2378574893th time that weekend, including winning about 254342957389467 EEKs on slot machines.

Sunday....uber hangover.... unfortunately short railing of the stockton rock (well played kid) very funny SnG"s, off to town again! SCARY club... meet james, more general laughter, 5am bed, random Russian man sweating all over my bed, clothes, APAT medal, Mattys money and passport.

Monday.... get stalked by said russian, fear for life, get the hell out of dodge, listen to Phil"s chortling ALL the way home.

Overall, this is the best weekend away i have ever had.

To find some people i have never spoken to before and feel like i have known them for years, and do nothing but laugh with them is truely special, thansk to all involved, I will never forget it, and will definately be doing it again, and will not be "too loose" as James so kindly put it after the 2nd hand of the tournament!!

Greetings!

Tempted as I was to go the way of numerous Scottish football fans in Buenos Aries, 1978 and never return, I have finally made it back from the Baltics having had a few extra days in Tallinn followed by 3 nights in Riga.

Most of it has already been said so I will do my best to avoid labourious detail and bullet point the highlights of my trip in chronological order

Friday

1. Everything runs smoothly for the very early flight and I find a seat next to Don Roberts (Hammerite). We had never me before but exchanged pleasantries on the forum so it was a pleasure chewing the fat with him discussing all things APAT for the duration of the flight.
2. Caught up with the Teesside Massive, Don L & Ger in the bar and the session began
3. Following serveral beers in the hotel bar, we investigated the casino where Sweeney"s chat up technique had me in stitches as he insisted to the georgeous bar-maid that he was looking for more than just a bar.."Ahm lookin" fah Kul-Cha!" - although he was to have the last laugh - vnh sir!!
4. Hit the old town, Karaoke Klearance (see prev.) and a few beers o/s the Peppersack where we met the random finnish, welsh, canadian, yorkshire couple.
5. *

Saturday

6.12 noon on saturday I receive a text from TC and a phone call from Don L checking i was ok? That"s nice!
7. Make it to the hotel barwhere Don informs me that in the middle of the night we were the last 2 out and as he tried to bundle me into a cab to come back with him the response was , "F**K It! I"m staying Out!"  :o
8. Suppose we had better play some poker... well not that much as it happens
9. Onto my tournament in a minute(what there was of it) but first news reaches me that Fatcatstu is out in a bit of a cooler. Apparently he had top set of a 10 high board when all the money went in and his opponent had pocket Kings. Unfortunately his oppo spiked a king and that was that but given Stu"s approach to poker and life in general he took this all in his stride and never again mentioned it the entire weekend  ;)
10. My own tourney was short-lived. Despite Don L"s advice "do not bluff these people" I proceeded to attempt just that and had 4k before you knew it. I recovered to almost 8k but ultimately went out with KK- I may post my exit hand in the right place, but not here  :)
11. With a lot of the day remaining I headed for an ultimately profitable cash session. It is 17 EEKs to the £ and we played 25 / 50 DC the highlight of which was scooping an 8k pot (probably the last chance i"ll get to say that!!) in a PLO game with Quad 8s
12. Headed to the old town
13. **
14. Returned to the casino to find Ger holding court as a kind of Irish Rowley Birkin QC with the Teesside Massive in absolute hysterics.
15. Ger Fell asleep

Sunday

16. It"s been mentioned on the thread I"m sure but the local beer is "Coq". So the first words I hear from Ger"s Mouth on Sunday are "Coq Please"
17. Railed young Matty for a while, sadly for far less time than we"d hoped. UL & GG Young Man.
18. Hilarious SNGs, absolutely hilarious - with the UK APAT contingent, and a couple of random locals - Ger you are a legend and I do not think I have ever enjoyed a game so much purely for the fun of it even if you continually out-drew me like a ******* - In fact you sucked out so hard and so often I think we could get you a job in one of Tallinn"s ..... errr....entertainment establishments  :o
19. The arrival of Mrs River and an entirely different few days begins  ;)

* Point 5 has been omitted due to a complete loss of memory
** Point 13 has been omitted in the interests of Mrs River remaining Mrs River  ;D

Thanks again to everyone involved, the staff, the locals, the lads!!

Good to see there is some proper two-handed drinking going on!

DAMN IT!
DAMN IT!
DAMN IT!
DAMN IT!

That is essentially due to numerous conversations like this...

Ger: Right, who wants a beer?

JP: No thanks Ger, I have a full pint
Phil: No thanks Ger, I have a full pint
Don: No thanks Ger, I have a full pint
Stu: No thanks Ger, I have a full pint
Gary: No thanks Ger, It"s 2.30pm and this is my 6th

Ger: Right, 6 Beers then

ALL: SIGH!

Hi JP nice report. I kind of lost touch with you after your exit on Saturday, so reading your report had helped me catch up.

Was nice to meet with you and chat on the plane, the journey certainly whizzed by.

Hopefully catch up with you and the rest of the Vienna/Tallinn gang later in the year.
