Just heard from my mate GARY PENIKET, who played Coventry on Saturday, that he has won a seat in the live Final of POKER MILLION on Friday December 10th on Sky Sports.
Gary will be the only amateur playing and I am sure that you will all be rooting for him.
I have been trying to get him to the BCPC for 2 years but he thinks he isn"t good enough......
-
Would be great to see him in an APAT shirt if he was inclined. Can you ask him whether he would be interested?
-
Wow, that"s huge. I"ve been watching the series all the way through. I"m sure he"ll love playing with Antonius, Hansen etc.
Imagine taking it down. Sweet.

Congratulations Gary - A fantastic opportunity.
I agree with Des (that was quick BTW!) would be awesome to see him in APAT gear.
-
I know the name but can"t place a face - any chance someone could link to the pic from Coventry please?
GL Gary!!
-
Considering his biggest cash is the £250 at the team championship, this is massive.
Good Luck Gary, anybody can win on the day TID

Yeah, either way fantastic achievement Gary and I will drop in to say hello on the night. We are relocating the Sky Poker studio next week and it will now be about 6 feet across the hall from the Sky Sports News studio.

It"s more to do with the fighting you arrange afterwards I"m not so keen on Bri, certainly not
cos of you BCPC donks :P (see you all in Bolton ;) BOING BOING!)
I"ve had a couple of £1000+ wins that aren"t linked to THMF database(honest guv ;D), but
effectively a sit&go buy-in at $125,000 .. LOL, now thats pretty big.
I had previously lost twice heads-up for Late Night Poker, so a third runners-up spot for sweet f.a
would have finished me off.. Cheers for the congrats everyone.
p.s Is Georgie Thompson working next Friday Des? ;)
-
Awesome stuff, well done Gary!
Have you locked up any cash? All the other seats have $90K for their heat wins. Plus do you get a table in the family & friends area. I can see a table full of bright green shirted reprobates hob nobbing with the poker jet set!!!

lol...i held a meeting with Tighty in the office once Gary and we were walking down the corridor and he did a double (triple lol) take when the one and only Georgie walked by. Anything"s possible!! You remember that for the final and take it down.
-
Gary is a great guy who contacted me and arranged to meet up in Vegas when we were both there in 2009.
I got him into the Ladbrokes party on top of the Rio in the Voodoo Lounge and that was where we first met up and he is a very down to earth lad who deserves this shot after back-to-back bubbles for Late Night Poker in successive years (in one of which he got it in with a set on the turn, only to be flushed on the river...with nowt for 2nd place !!).
He also loves mingling with the "Stars" so will really enjoy this experience and of course, a shot at ONE MILLION POUNDS is probably a once in a lifetime chance.
The whole of APAT is behind ya Gaz....and I wanna see some Baggies gear on show.
Tek it darn mucka !!
-
Nice one Gary lad shhhiiiiiipppppp
-
When do you play, and when is it on TV?? And if u are playing against Gus, ask him why gives so much money away online all the time.
good luck to you, i dont know u but it would be great to see u win it. The pros dont really need the money anyway.
@ brian....Sick brag about beign able to get someone into private party at the voodo lounge.
-
Will..it is live on Friday 10th and will be shown in full @ BCPC (Hope this doesn"t get deleted as I mentioned that 4-letter word there) on the big screen.
Matt is going down there with Gary.

Don"t think we"ve ever met Gary but wow! Good luck and enjoy the whole experience

According to high stakes db, gus was down about 8 million over all games when i last looked. PTR is not so accurate, it has only been tracking since 08, and it doesnt follow all games, such as the mixed limits etc.

I am off with gary on friday and cant wait !!

The line up for this Friday"s live Poker Million final is now complete after online qualifier Gary Peniket won the last seat after winning a special freeroll at Full Tilt Poker.
The Birmingham man will be making his TV debut on Friday after a couple of near misses in other televised events. "I'm really excited about appearing on TV, but I am hoping I can shut it out after a few hands and concentrate on the job in hand," said Peniket. "I have finished second in the "winner-takes-all" packages twice before to appear on Late Night Poker, so it was a case of third time lucky."
Joining the 39-year-old at a high class final table are Gus Hansen , two-time WSOP bracelet winner Howard Lederer , cash game legend Patrik Antonius , Hendon Mobster Barny Boatman , Brighton chairman and multiple Poker Million finalist Tony Bloom , WSOPE Main Event champion James Bord and the winner of the stacked runner up play off Seth Webber .
So how does Peniket rate his chances? "I can't wait to tangle with Gus in particular as he is such a prominent iconic figure in poker today, and Patrik is obviously legendary in terms of cash games".
Each player is guaranteed $90,000 for reaching the final with $1m up for grabs in the winner takes all final.
The FullTiltPoker.com Poker Million IX final is live on Sky Sports 2 and HD2 from 7pm on Friday.
-
Is Gary guaranteed the $90,000 or was it the different heat winners, plus Seth Webber with his second chance runner up spot?
-
If he"s an online pro how come he plays APAT?
-
If he"s an online pro how come he plays APAT?
good question
the immediate answer is we had no idea he was.
-
If he"s an online pro how come he plays APAT?
Gary got made redundant a while back and plays on-line poker whilst he"s in between jobs..."media" definition of an on-line poker pro?
-

a bit of poetic license in the news report then... "The 39 year-old left a job in finance three years ago to take up poker full-time"

gary is a pro like the rest of us not lets all just wish him luck instead of being patetic (spelling brummie) lol so playing s&g online small stakes and a few mtt makes u a pro what dose playing £300 mtt at dtd make u when apat have a £250 pro one why dont them pls play the apat pro plus didnt apat wont pros in that why they have £250 mtt now why do some apat members use this forum just to moan in stead of helping pls like it should be so to my mate gaz smash them donks friday show them us brummie lads are having it and up the baggies do the ville satday woop woop
-
I was just asking a question. Definition of a pro is Obv up for debate but three years relying on poker for an income would make him a pro imo. Also dont know what u mean by help him? Sure he won"t lose any sleep over my post. Gl to him in an extremely so sick line up.
-
But seriously, 39 ?
-

Erm...once again...but in English please. ;D
-
Matt - nobody"s having a dig... George asked a perfectly standard question about his "pro" status, given that APAT have a rule that "pros" (those who make their sole income from poker) aren"t eligible to play the £75 events....
Personally I don"t really care either way - but it is a fair question.
GL Gary - really hope you take it down mate.
-
Gary is a mate and he plays APAT. He is also a Baggie and for those reasons alone he gets my support.
If anyone thinks he is a Pro compared to Hansen, Antonius, et al, then they are wrong.
He is a down to earth guy who loves the game and although I haven"t known him long, I have never heard him say a bad word against anyone.
If he wins this it would be amazing and I am sure that APAT would want to promote the fact that he plays under "Our" banner.
Maybe he could replace that well-known APAT member Liv Borree who has her picture on the banner for the Poker Forum, yet I believe hasn"t played since Season One ??
GL Gazza......BCPC are behind you.
-
Why does every post have to turn into a discussion in the negative way . Who cares if he a pro amateur , he has played in apat so all that needs saying is good luck !
-
If anyone thinks he is a Pro compared to Hansen, Antonius, et al, then they are wrong.
The "level" of Pro is irrelevant. If he"s a "Pro" under APAT's definition then he shouldn"t be playing in the £75 events.
Being a "Pro" doesn"t make you a good player....although staying a "Pro" would probably require it.
Frankly I could care less....but the rule is there and it"s up to APAT to enforce it...or not.
-
The "No Pros" ethos is up to players to self-police and many do. I know of 5-10 players who would love to play APAT £75s but don"t as they know they are not eligible
If we don"t know a player and have nothing to go on, we won"t necessarily spot a Pro in the field. The number of these that I am aware of in four seasons is less than 5, and they subsequently haven"t played the Amateur events
If we have concerns, we address it with the player, and have done so on several occasions
Of course there are no restrictions on Pro league or the team events
and, as has been said here already, its not the matter at hand. Shipping the Poker Million is, and good luck to him.
-
well if he ships this, then its fair to say he won be plying the £75s again. Good luck to him, no mater how much he has in his roll.
lol at people calling gus hansen a pro, He just makes his money from a % of shares in full tilt and also promotions etc.
-
as has been said here already, its not the matter at hand. Shipping the Poker Million is, and good luck to him.
Damn right!

If I understand you right (and I"m by no means certain that I do)..then not having a job and having no other source of income other than poker DOES make someone a Pro.
They might not be making a lot but that"s the definition .

Who you"re playing against, at what stakes and how much you win are all irrelevant as to whether for APAT purposes a player is a pro or not.
And if we have any issues, we privately discuss these with the players in question for any future events.
In this case, Gary is not playing in an APAT event, so this discussion is just hijacking a positive thread about an APAT player about to have an incredible poker experience, steamroll some of the best players in the world and scoop a lot of money.
Let"s keep it on track, and Good Luck Gary. GET IT WON !!!!!!!

Very best of luck Gaz,TID mate.

I"ll be watching this from about 11, so dont bust out before then.
LOLz at the over reaction to George"s question / comment

GL to Gary, he was on one of my tables at Coventry, checking his phone for the WBA score. Hope he runs well and gives a good account of himself 8)
He was the guy who had Kings cracked twice? Didn"t realise it was him!

Maybe he could replace that well-known APAT member Liv Borree who has her picture on the banner for the Poker Forum, yet I believe hasn"t played since Season One ??
One question. Does he look better than Liv?
I"m guessing the answer is no! :)
-
This discussion about what makes a pro is always open to various interpretations.A good example is Tony Bloom an extremely good player who scares a lot of the big names but makes his money from sports betting and other interests but has also won some large tournements and had big cash game scores. He insists he only plays poker for fun so is an amateur by definition yet some may dispute it.I am just saying its hard to have an absolute ruling sometimes. So come on Gary TID.

Can anyone answer my question from the other day?

The answer is no Chris.
Gary won a freeroll that had certain entry critique. He won a seat and a few quid expense"s to cover 2 nights
accom and travel.....and of course the chance to win $1million...

Play to HU then chop for half a mill each?
-
Depends who he gets hu with, if its with Gus, then he will want to flip for the money, but then again gus has probably cross booked everyone at the table.
Is there a standard pay out structure, or top 3 etc. Cant see it as winner takes all. that would be cruel.
-
Winner takes all Will.
-
think they will do a chop lot earlier than HU. Theyre all well off but 1 mirrion is a lot of $$$
-
Not sure on last year, but deffo year before they broke payout structure down when 3 handed, the year Marty Smith won i think.
-
Good luck Gary.
What a chance. I wish you the best of luck for tonight!! TID!
Paul.
-
Only an hour to go. Rooting for you Gary !
-
Gary looks pretty cool, easy money to his left ;D
-
Does anybody know how good a sit n go player he actually is, if he knows shoving and calling ranges he should have at least as good of a chance and anybody at this table should he not?
-
I agree, had a bit of the 14"s on BF
-
Gutted for you Gary, what a card rack Bord has been!
-
Really unlucky exit hand :(
Well played.
-
based on wot been said tonite about Gary being a pro, a few people owe George an apology, he is a pro and shud not be playing APAT, shame though, ul .
-
I dont think george was having a pop in the first place, it just got out of hand.
anyway, really ul with the exit hand. That will hurt for a long time i think. But at least the high stakes cash games online will have a money boost with Gus donating his winnings around the tables.

Yeah unlucky Gary, horrible exit with a dominating hand :(

Again definition of pro is up for debate. I was just asking a question. If he earns solely from poker than that makes him a professional surely otherwise how do you define it?
-

ok if u say so are let him know he cant play any more lol cause he a pro now he been on tv

Matt its nothing to do with Gary being on TV
Now we have information that there is cause to think Gary is a Pro, we will have to talk to him about his eligibility should he choose to buy into or qualify into future APAT National Amateur events
Until we have that conversation with him I am not going to pre-judge it, and the situation is no different to various other players we"ve discussed the Pro issue with in the past.
Firstly though, Gary needs to enter an event. If he does, then the process of discussion, privately, can begin

I don"t think anyone on here wish Gary anything other than good luck Matt, but the question raised was legit once Gary classified himself as a professional in the Matchroom press release. As Rich said, if an appropriate time comes up we"ll have a chat with him, if not we won"t. It will always be down to Gary to say what his status is, not George, you, Rich or I. So let"s let this one die now. :)
-
its just so sad how a few kick it off on here there was no need to say any think about o well no worries des i still going to try pro poker xmas week woopp woop

Matt not at all
It was a perfectly reasonable subject of George to raise, and will be addressed if Gary wishes to play APAT events in the future
-
i think we leave it ok shame rules only for sum then

i think we leave it ok shame rules only for sum then
Far from it Matt. If you are aware on any players that you consider are professional playing APAT events, then drop me a pm, and I"ll look into it.
We can"t, and won"t, check every player that signs up to an APAT event, but where necessary, we have had private conversations in the past, and we can easily do that in the future if necessary.
As you are going pro for Christmas, we won"t put on any APAT events over the festive period, so you don"t miss out. ;)
In fact, I might go pro for Christmas aswell. Sounds a laugh.
