Post by: AMRN on April 25, 2011, 17:48:12 PM: My first visit to a casino was in the late eighties at the Rainbow in Birmingham, and I had to apply for access 24 hours in advance, and had to wear a collar and tie to gain entry. Jeans, trainers, sports clothes, etc were definitely not allowed.

Today, most high street casinos rightly (imo) insist on a certain standard of dress, albeit it"s now far more relaxed than 20 years ago, but they do also insist on entrants being registered members.

I found it quite strange that I could just walk in off the street at Aspers showing no id at all. Also quite strange to see blokes in shorts and flip-flops, etc. On Sunday night I sat at a BlackJack table with a guy dressed in tuxedo and black tie, a lady in a posh frock, and a guy in a string vest with paint and cement down his trousers and over his hobnail boots.

I got talking to the dealer at the table - and he hated the sub-standard dress code. Jeans/trainers - no problem as that is standard society dress today, but work clothes, beach clothes, etc - unacceptable. It"s not like he was an old fuddy duddy harping back to the old days (like me), he was just 21.

Any thoughts on this? Is a casino a better environment for having dress code standards, and for knowing a few details about"s it clientelle through membership? Or am I in the minority?

Not all bad at Aspers though - by far the best variety of house games in one casino that I"ve ever come across in the UK. Staff and food were both excellent.

Post by: Hammerite on April 25, 2011, 18:13:15 PM: As far as I know it is a legal requirement to have a list of members if you operate a casino. Unfortunately this law is enforced by the Gambling Commission, who have since it"s inception not bothered to enforce it.

I was shocked when I walked into the Empire Leicester Square a couple of years ago and was just allowed to walk in off the street. I think they were the first to see if they could get away with it, nothing was done and now it seems to be common practice.

I think the dress code thing is linked, if you have to provide proof of membership upon addmittance then this is when any dress code can be enforced, otherwise as you witnessed over the weekend anything goes. I tend to agree with you Steve that there should be some kind of minimum stanard of attire, I guess at the end of the day as with so many things in modern life, cash is king.

Not really bothered about dress code, take Vegas as an example of how casual it can be. That said I do like places (not necessarily casinos) that have a dress code and stick to it. Makes it a bit special IMO.

And seriously why do you care what other people wear. I have seen people in suits smart pants etc and to be fair have never complained how pikey the look in their primark get up. Because i really dont care each to his own as long as in the constraints of the establishment.
Would love to go to one APAT without some petty complaint can these people please be banned for being fun vampires ;)

I don"t think it was a personal dig at you. You were dressed quite smartly compared to some. ;)

We go by the venues rules, and that"s that.

I understand that on the Saturday night there were some people in the downstairs bar that were wearing hardly any clothes at all. Shocking. :o :o :o :o :o

If a random person walked in off the street and cashed in for £10,000 for example, would he have to show ID to collect ? I am sure there must be laws relating to money laundering.

Was this comment aimed at my comment, in the previous post, or the OP?

If you are asking, was my post a personnal dig at you. Then no it was not. I wasn"t even in Newcastle at the weekend, I have no idea how you were dressed or how you behaved.

It was simply a general observation that many casinos seem to tolerate behaviour that I would deem unacceptable. Therefore how people dress is a secondary consideration.

As for the question raised in the OP... Good or bad, the days of having to wear a collar and tie to enter a casino are long gone, I have no problem with shorts and flip-flops, but do think the line should be drawn at dirty work-wear and boots. I wouldn"t be keen to see football shirts allowed either.

I was disappointed to miss all of this, sounded really good viewing....course, I was trying to make Day 2 at the time

No Steve it wasn"t a personal dig at you. I think my discussion point was about member registration, and about dress code in general. I don"t think I said anything about you or what you were wearing - in fact, I can"t remember what you were wearing as the only time I saw you was when you were sat at a cash table (and wearing a very smart polo shirt).

If you read back at my OP, the only person I actually referenced was somebody wearing their building site attire having obviously just popped in on the way home from work.

The bloke stank of a days hard work, and left cement/paint powder all over the stool he was sat on - I don"t think I"m being a "fun vampire" by asking if others think this is acceptable in a casino.

This in my opinion was prob the best apat i been too from the thur to the sunday was such a laugh. And was dissappointed for someone to have a moan about such a succesful event. I know it was more aimed at the establishment but such is life .

LOL Steve - I said hello to your top half, and given that you were sat at a table, I didn"t really have any interest in looking under the table at your bottom half - not that way inclined ;)

My opinion is general. Not moaning about APAT, the players, the staff, the play, or anything else. In fact not moaning at all - just expressing an opinion, and asking what others think about the subject. If the UK casino community ends up relaxing dress code across all casinos, so be it - very different to the past, that"s all... and my personal preference is for standards of some sort (although G Luton take it too far by in my opinion by banning trainers).
