this is the problem when you play this level of players! i had a silimar situation earlier when i push all in(with pocket 8s) and someone calls 1/3 of his stack with 8-9 off!! of course the 9 hits on the flop and im nearly drawing dead! Can you imagine doing that yourself?

something i have been doing recently is playing tournaments with a lower amount of runners, funnily enough my results have been far better including making final tables instead of just cashing. try that for a few weeks rather than playing the big guarantee tournis, hopefully you luck and skill will come through! ;D

Skill ?

I think you must be confusing me with someone else.

I"m the tall chap that is normally running around getting chip counts at APAT events because I"ve already been knocked out.

I do agree with you though about the thinking of "would I push/call with what they push/call with"

Noble1 sent me a link to a very good article on levels of poker thinking.  Will go and try and find it.

haha, you have plenty...to make the final table of these you need to!

just dont lose confidence and try some smaller field size events.

at least you get pocket pairs! i wish i saw a few of those from time to time! ;D

hand 1 - standard. villain has an M of 7-8 and is looking to get them in. dont like the move with ATs but have seen worse.

hand 2 - villain is never folding here.

In both cases you got in a great spot to double up/bust someone and got plain unlucky and did nothing wrong.

You are a good tourney player leigh, but you dont play the volume of MTTs to get any idea of how good you really are at big field MTTs.

Try playing some smaller field tourneys.

pros - finish in a decent time, can give you more idea of how well you are doing, get a decent return on going deep, even if you dont FT
cons - no big payday when you FT

Options are....

tourneys on Partypoker
180s on stars*
deepstacks on Boss
double stacks on iPoker (if they still do them?)

* the recommended option

i will add to that article which some may find complete tosh but heyho i"ll put it out there...if we assume our opponents a bit lacking in the skills department and also think on level of that there own , when you try to bluff these donkeys you should do it in a way they understand for example the guy 2 seats to your right hits a set on a rainbow flop and min raises when bet into then he bets pot on the turn, the opponent he his playing stacks off his chips in a foolish all in with top pair..
When you get a chance to go hu with this guy try to mirror his actions for a strong hand/rep a set even if you have complete tripe and see if they see this as a set,,because it is the way that they would play it .. you might be surprised by how many who will give up there hand and give you credit.... I call it my mirror move ;D kind of like the guy who bluffs a lot always thinks everyone is doing it to him so when you get a hand against these types you bet like a maniac they always think you dont have it...

anyone else have any cunning tactics?

Should I have bet the flop, maybe, but he"s hit big also, can"t see him getting away from it either.

you could get away from that,,had you seen him play trips fast like this even to a reraise when he is oop? if so call but his line suggests to me tricky set on flop, when he reraised did he tank or was it a insta shove? after you rr 4th street did you consider his holdings might be KK or AK? if so why did you discount them?
just trying to get your thought process on this -what range preflop did you put him on .....
