Events of yesterday - "anti railing"
« on: November 23, 2009, 20:58:24 PM »
Below is the content of a PM I shared with Brian Martin and Andy Duncan earlier today.  On reflection, I was disappointed with the way I let my emotions affect my behaviour yesterday with respect to this silly "anti-railing", and I accept that it may have caused methods of play near critical times in the tournament to have changed.

Both Brian and Andy have responded to my PM, and I hope that the matter is closed and that they forgive my actions. I will not share their responses - they are at liberty to do so on this thread if they so choose.  I have taken on board their comments.

I have decided to post the contents of my PM to them on an open thread as an opportunity to expand my apology to anybody else I may have impacted by changing the dynamics of the tournament on their tables.

I play sport and poker with my heart on my sleeve, and often find it difficult to keep emotions beneath the surface - something I recognise that I need to work on, particularly within a card room. Please bear with me.

I"m happy for Brian and Andy to post their responses on here if they wish, but would prefer that others do not post - I don"t particularly want this to turn into a discussion thread - it"s simply a vehicle for my sincere apology.

Regards
Steve

Brian/Andy

I gather I may have caused you offence with "anti railing" during yesterday"s competition, and for this I apologise humbly.  I did my best to retain a level of composure, but with a whole season on the line and now out of my hands, my emotions were shattered.

For me, in terms of live poker, APAT is everything, and to succeed within APAT means more to me than you can possibly imagine, hence my difficulty with keeping emotions in complete check yesterday. As things were out of my hands, I probably should have just gone home and let events take their course, but so wanted to be around the card room as the end of season finale unfolded.

I have a great many friends in APAT, yourselves included and I hope I haven"t tainted that. Please accept my apology.

Looking forward to resuming battle over the felt next season.

Steve

Having spoken to both Andy and Brian about Steve"s behaviour, I hope that they will both accept his apology as being genuine on this matter. It takes a big man to admit he is wrong.
I room with Steve at most APAT events, but I told him that his anti-railing was a little out of order although I sincerely believe that at the time, he didn"t realise just how much it was apparant to everyone else.
Andy is a fellow BCPC player and for me, we root for our own WHATEVER the circumstances are and if they beat you, well so be it.
Brian is a guy who, while I don"t know him that well, has always come across as a good and fair bloke and at the end of the day, I am sure that he wanted it just as much as Steve did. Hopefully, he will shake Steve by the throa......ermm....hand in January and accept the offer of a beer and move on.
Having spoken to other player"s whose opinions I respect on this matter on Sunday night, I know that Steve"s action"s were noticed by a lot more than just Brian and Andy. But lets respect his apology here and leve it at that.
Steve Redfern loves his poker and loves APAT and just got carried away by being No1.......If any of you out there ever get in that situation, then see if you aren"t taken over by your emotions at some stage. As someone who has been there, believe me, you WILL be.
Good luck to everyone in Season Four.

I think Steve has compounded this problem with his PM and now the manner of this thread, it was probably best left unsaid. I have bigger things to worry about than some bad etiquette in a game somewhere down south a few days ago  ::) but for completeness my reply is below.  I obviously had to have my say first but accepted his apology ..end of..move on!

Hi Steve

I cannot speak for Andrew but I"ll copy him in anyway but I think you caused a lot of offence to a lot of people not just us two.

As I said at the start of the day I play every comp I enter to win whatever comes on top of that is incidental to me.  I think upon reflection you should have gone home but to use "I"m an updater" excuse to get behind the rail was poor and maybe APAT should have looked at that more closely.

As it happened I didn"t mind you on my shoulder as I quite enjoyed watching you sweat.  However, as I"m sure you know, bad etiquette has no place in any sport never mind a "friendly" event such as this.

I realised it would be difficult to retain your composure as you have been pumped up all season for this but the incidents that stick in my mind are: -

When Andrew had his Aces cracked - I looked at his face and realised that he was visibly devasted, you failed to recognised that and the last thing he wanted to see is you fist pumping behind him.

When Andrew bust - again he is playing a comp to win and in any comp as you know you just want to get away from the table when you are out and you were in his face and I take my hat off to him for taking it so well.

Making me a target on the table - There were a few people on my table who had no idea about the rankings until you made it clear to them.  This meant I had to prove to them I wasn"t bothered I changed strat and showed them more bluffs than I wanted too and this affected the way I wanted to play originally and this shouldn"t happen from the rail.

When Alan busted me - You jumped around like a little girl and then congratulated Alan in a big way, that was very poor form.  Alan actually came over and apologised to me afterwards for that because he realised it was wrong.

I don"t begrudge you your win Steve you deserve it and to be honest I was speaking to Leigh earlier in the day and said I hope you do it as I know you want to experience a GUK but that didn"t mean I was going to throw my seat away.  I had made my mind up if I did bink the seat I was going to offer you a percentage of any winnings because I knew you"d be devastated.  I would also have had complete respect for your feelings. "Getting it quietly" is maybe a mantra you should follow in poker and also read the guys blog of the same name, Andy Ward one of the nicest guys you"ll ever a meet at a table and he wins loads.

I think you need to learn a bit of humility (and people skills) I know you are relatively new to live poker but outside of APAT that behaviour would not have gone unchecked.

As for your apology, it doesn"t seem like one to be honest. The title of the PM, the tone of the mail and the fact you have done it privately to just two people, it just doesn"t feel right.  I lost count the amount of people (including your friends) who were apologising on your behalf yesterday and the amount of people who were also offended by your actions.  So for me it would have meant more to me if the apology was more sincere and more public.

However, saying all that I am not a bitter person and life is too short to hold grudges, so I do accept and I wish you all the best in the GUK"s just let me know which one and I may come along and anti-rail  Wink
