Poker - Why?
« on: January 02, 2010, 11:37:58 AM »
Okay having come to the end of my most successful year as a poker player, I thought I would just surmise on my reasons for playing poker. I started playing in 2007, with a trip to Vegas in the offing I decided to learn a new game to play in the Casinos. Poker was on the TV, and it looked straight forward enough! So I started playing on line, learnt the basics and after bubbling my first ever live tournament in Vegas I was hooked.
Thing is I don't actually play poker for the money, but you have to play for money otherwise it's not proper poker, and I measure my success by the amount of money I've won!( No where near as much as some of you guys  ;))
So why do I play, I still play Cricket and Rugby, so I'm not substituting Poker for Sport, because lets face it, Poker isn't a sport it's a game. Having said that there are similarities, skill, tactics, cerebral gymnastics! The table chat could be seen as a replacement for dressing room banter, and the APAT European Team championships recently showed team spirit in abundance.
The vast majority of my Poker is played on line, I love the APAT events, and the league tournament meant we actually got to know APATers on line, there is a pretty vibrant local poker scene for some decent live poker, and the APAT national events are just the nuts.
So why do I play? The challenge of getting better? Addiction? Meeting people? The Big win? Pure enjoyment?
I am not sure, have a think about it, why do you play poker?
