Law on pub poker

Hi guys

off to the pub later for a coupla SnG,s. Play every Wed night/Sun aft for £5 each, normally between 6 & 10 players. The landlord or missus plays but he reckons it"s illegal to play for money so we hide it away. Couple of weeks ago the local plod comes in on patrol and he starts looking for the money. "what money, we play for fun" we say, as Terry squirms on the crisp packet with money in.

I then try to explain that it"s actually legal to play for small stakes, something about 2005 legislation being passed in November - am i right ?

does anyone have a link i could go to and print out for landlord as he is becoming more agitated each time we meet (in case CID/MI5/KGB are watching)

i"m googling but can"t find anything concrete to show him so any help would be gratefull,   thanks in advance

i dont have a link, but i run poker in pubs myself, as sort of like a 2nd job.

I sent a letter to our local council askin if what we were doing was ok and they replied saying it was fine as long as we werent raking any pot or causing any late night bother.

So i cant really see any problem, we run like £25 deepstacks every wed with like 30-40 runners and have no problem.

One of my mates has a white license and he used to hate watchin us play in the pub, because it was illegal and he couldnt risk losing his job.

As of the 1st of September when the new laws came into force he happily plays with us.

Unfortunately for Mr Piranha i think what he is doing is illegal due to the size of the prize pool available. I can only assume either he didnt tell the council how much was being played for or the council didnt read his letter properly. I may well be wrong about this but im sure your not meant to have a pot of more than 250 pounds.

i see, i dont think the coulncil were aware of what we were playing for so i will look into it.

Actually, I have a feeling the pool cannot exceed £100. Our local snooker club runs 20 seat SnG"s every Sunday, but the buy in is only £5 - I understand that this is to keep the pool down to a legal limit of £100.

I think the max a pot can be is 100 pound in a pub and i think its either 200 or 250 in a working mens club but the max any person can lose in a nite is ten pounds
