Gary "luckbox" Motson

This is Gary (oh and Fiddy at the start getting a kiss)...  ;D.. NSFW by the way. This was an end of evening pizza trip after poker and Gary"s views on Slipknot.. and him wanting to share his "crack".. not for the faint hearted haha..

Gary has played one APAT tournament. And final tabled it. His nickname used to be "ace rag" due to his tendency to play any ace. Plays very randomly and would probably fit in well at Ger"s "Aquarium". He loves the Eagles. He doesnt like Slipknot. We have no clue what he"s doing half the time.. and to be honest I don"t think Gary does either. Great fun to play against, loves his red wine before poker and copious beer during the game. Top lad. He"s coming upto Glasgow as well this year for the APAT. Going to be legendary  ;D

IMHO Gary Motson is the most under-rated player at the table.

PS - the GPs were paid (and flagged) in euros Phil. Can you correct that just in case my backer thinks I held back when I paid my 95%.

PPS - can"t wait to read the final part of this series - EDIT just realised you"re planning on a write up for Mark "I hate the lot of you and your pocket sixes" Wright.  ;D
thus

PPPS - can"t wait to read the penultimate part of this series  ;)

Gary "bigballs" Palmer

I"ve known Gary since school. That is indeed a very very long time. 10 years at least  ;) It was Gary"s fault that I got into poker in the first place via a random home game and him that ventured with me to the very first poker in the pub game at the Eagle. This is him and I at the Eagle many moons ago on that fateful night that would spark a love of the game.. banter.. and beer and poker combination..

When I first started playing we used to venture upto Aspers in Newcastle when we felt brave enough to play in an actual casino and Gary was my hero cashing for fun it seemed. There was me, driving, getting knocked out early and only having enough money for a buy in, sat watching Gary till the early hours final table after final with my free diet coke full of wonder. Then there was the WSOP main event qualifier. I remember having a girl come round to my flat I had started seeing who was in bed wondering WTF I was doing sat on my own in the living room watching a laptop and Gary get onto the final table and down to the final 5 where 3 (if I remember) got a main event ticket. This does not have a happy ending (for both of us  ;D).. and if you ever see him ask him about A 10.. and bluffing it all off thinking the guy "surely cant call"... ooops. That was a lot of years ago and we still laugh at how we really didnt know what we were doing (like we do now of course  ::) ) and qualifying for the main event would have been such a giggle.

Gary"s a star of epic proportions and we"ve shared many a random adventure in the past (many not suitable for public consumption).. he was even my best man, lots of laughs and he is the enforcer of the group when it comes to telling unwanted players who enquire about our home game to "do one".. thus the big balls  :) he gets to a live APAT once a year due to family commitments and made day 2 in Spain last year.. he"ll be with us in Glasgow.. and I know he can"t wait.  OH and he does the best home made bramble brandy ever. Fact. Roll on Christmas for that  ;D

Matty "the rock" Ward

I still to this day do not believe that Matty is Stu"s brother.. must of been a mix up at the hospital, some adoption I"m not aware of.. its a mystery. But there you go. This is his "serious" face.. think it was in Dublin where he just missed out on day two.

Matty and I tend to get into trouble pretty much anywhere we go, from "pinching" glasses of wine from random peoples bottles of wine (in Dublin) at a wine bar (don"t ask.. it was the only place that wasnt charging on the door), to drinking champagne on the flight to Cardiff and being asked if we were a couple which obviously we played upto.. to repeating the champagne on the way to Vegas and being refused more than one bottle.. to Vegas where our "banter" was frowned upon just about every place we went to.

In the IP we were laughing so much the dealer got in a huff, stopped dealing and asked just what was so funny.. I thought we were supposed to be having fun? obviously not  ;D to chinking chip stacks together at Pai Gow and getting told off by the pit boss.. the dollar bar and Jimmy... Monday night football in Vegas! so many trips... OH and Glasgow where we went for the free bar during the Betfair days and discovering it was the whole bar that was free.. not just the draft beer. Happy days. Actually.. remembering that.. I wonder if they"ll let me back in when we"re up there soon  :P

He was last UK man standing in Estonia making day two.. and being the "the rock" he had an image of being as tight as Brian.. in recent years though thats been well and truly thrown out of the window and has joined the rest of us on the dark side. Calls ANY bet that I make, regardless just for the craic. So pleased he"ll be there Thursday as he doesnt make that many anymore due to work. He"s one of the funniest guys I know and an absolute legend.

Stu "the cock" Ward

What can I say about Stu? Lets find a nice photo of him first.. this is his not so happy face leaving Vegas ..

I"ve known Stu at lot of years now, and most of you will know him as loud, someone who takes their bad beats extremely "well" and errm well basically loud. Well he"ll acknowledge himself I"m sure that he was alot worse (although if you saw his phone recently after a casino cash session you"d think not). I know thats hard to believe. But its true. I remember one night when he"d got knocked out of a pub at the Fairfield, storming off, calling everyone a pack of ****"s and slamming the door so hard on the way out that it came off the hinges (well nearly). Oh actually he uses the word **** alot. Nowadays he"s more chilled out (no honest) takes his bad beats really well, just ask him about his pocket 10 s in Estonia haha.. OK.. no he still doesnt take the bad beats that well.. but he"s mellowing. He"ll just call you a **** instead of calling everyone one  ;)

He has a knack of being completely sober and looking like its all going well on the beer then drinking that killer pint and its game over. We"ve had many a night (and day) on the beer, I remember one time heading home from Yarm and Stu deciding to steal a mobility scooter and put the basket from the front on his head. Still giggle about that.. having random ARRRRRPAAAATTTTTT shouting contests.. and the time in Newcastle he rang 118 118 in the early hours wanting to discuss boobies and redialling numerous times only for the same poor lass on the night shift answering the phone each time  ;D

Now I can"t leave this introduction without mentioning.. that he won something once. We"ve won a few gold medals amongst the gang, and silver and bronze (.. ok they"re mostly online) but Stu was the first and I"ll never forget the day that he won the APAT European championships.. not that I look back with fondness.. just that he wont let me  ;) Seriously though Stu has the game on his day to win any tournament, is one of the most aggressive players amongst us and is to be feared when he has a stack as he rarely sits back. Love him loads and I look forward to buying him a birthday beer or 2.. or 3.. this week. OH and never.. ever get into the "random shots" game with him. Will end badly.

Winner of 1 gold, 2 silver & 1 bronze medals.

Mark "its all about the win" Wright

I"ve known Mark since I was in my teens.. so a lot of years and he"s one of my closest mates, he used to play our Thursday game every week, until well.. he stopped. Lets rewind first though. Here"s Mark at his first ever APAT and like Gary Motson he got to a final table. Here"s his interview with Des and yes it really is.. all about the win..

Mark is super competitive at most things, and invented what was to become the "sulky stool" at our home games. Mark would venture to the "stool" whenever things went bad and curse the world.. the game and state he"d never play again. I lost count the number of times the facebook group "Mark stop with your asshattery and get back to poker" was used but I think it was one fateful evening where his Kings were busted by sixes and then Gary "just for a giggle" Palmer went all in with his sixes, having seen how well the kings went down, against Mark"s Aces. I think the sulky stool was found somewhere a few miles away. Mark"s brother Simon used to play as well.. his last game ended with him walking home.. 5 miles + in the rain after being knocked out.

Mark is making a welcome return this Thursday and I"m over the moon.. I tell him most weeks, but I miss him lots. In fact so much so that I"ve now started randomly attending a redtooth poker league on a Tuesday just to see him. He"s a top fella, loves the boro, super fit (having blasted round the Great North recently in a personal best time) is great banter, great fun and reads the game very well.. just be careful playing pocket sixes against him... and not be sat on the designated sulky stool at the time  ;D

Winner of 1 gold, 2 silver & 1 bronze medals.

Phil "Tompkyfish" Tompkinson

So!!! What to say about the Tompkyfish. Well, we had best start from the begining.

I first came to know of Phil on the local pub scene, as mentioned it was probably the Fairfield, i was always to drunk to remember! Anyway, Phil was widely acknowledged to be the best player in the North East at this moment in time and was generally very well respected. As time moved on, (primarily) Phil me and Matty Ward became good mates and started touring the local pubs and rileys clubs playing poker whereever we could find it. I had genuinely never seen someone with as much of a love for the game as Phil.

Eventually we were to settle into playing poker every week on a Thursday at The Eagle, where we played the local R\ed tooth or pokerin/down/around/ontop of the pub league, resulting in playing regional finals as we usually crushed the league between us. One fateful day in Newcastle Phil confirmed his status as the best by winning the regional finals, with myself coming second somehow (its a bit of a blur, we were all hammered!)

Anyway. A bit more about the man himself. As everyone in APAT knows, Phil is probably the nicest man in the world. Always ready to offer a hug at any given second (i think Ger was getting worried by the amount of them we were having at Chezger) and always witha  smile on his face or that VERY loud laugh bellowing out ( not as loud as his snoring though)

Phil is the absolute reason that any of us know about APAT, after attending one and coming back and harping on about it for months on end, which we will all be eternally grateful for, as it has led to meeting all you lot, and occasions like Vegas, where Phil"s love of all things midget finally came to public light, or Estonia, or Spain. There has been too many to mention.

nowadays Phil is reaping the success that he deserves out of his business, as despite his penchant for tomfoolery and beer, he has worked damned hard to make his company what it is today, so well done and good luck on that one.

So there you have it. In conclusion, Phil "Tompkyfish" Tompkinson. Leader and CEO of the Stockton Massive. All round legend and possibly the nicest guy ever with a habit of picking loony"s as girlfriends.

Still a **** though.
