Software Discussion
« on: November 27, 2012, 14:17:10 PM »
I have been a member of APAT since it"s inception, and would like to state " The software is the worst I have encountered in all my years of playing online poker", we have over the years moved from one site to another, but the current situation, leaves me speechless!

Nothing further to add, but would love to set up a vote on this to see what the other members thoughts are?

What would a vote accomplish?

The software may not be to everyone"s liking ... but for me it"s enjoyment of playing with the APAT community that overides any thoughts I have on whatever site we are playing on.

I find it difficult to believe that you haven"t come across the network software before.

However, if you choose not to play that"s fair enough. Myself, I don"t but that"s for other reasons.

Hate the BOSS platform, and would not play on it if APAT weren"t there.  I don"t play on it because it is a great platform, or because I have a liking of the client software - I play on it because I want to be involved with the APAT games and community.

I don"t think there are many on here that would say they like the software, or that they play on it as their preferred option..... like me, they all play on it because they all enjoy playing the APAT games.

There"s no point moaning about it - it is what it is.  That said, there is nothing to stop people putting forward structured requests for change (ie the silly H4H scenario) - I know that Matt does what he can with BOSS to seek improvements, and that our feedback can only help.

Really don"t know what a vote would achieve.... yes we can all vote that Pokerstars has a better interface than BOSS. But so what?

Sorry, my vote would be to move again to a different platform. They are obviously making money on the back of our deposits, entrance fees, rake. Lets pay it to a provider that has decent software and makes the whole experience of playing online better. I note the comments on playing with other APAT members, but this happens wherever we play.

I"m sure someone else will come along to word it better than I am about to ... but surely, having been a member since inception you"ll know that APAT swallows costs with site hosting/Venue payments/value added online tournaments/value added seats at live games etc.

In order to survive and offer APAT members added value/great structured deep stack tournaments (bearing in mind this season being the first where standard rake has had to be applied to tournies and tbh amazing how many years we were able to be offered it rake free) ... these costs have to come from somewhere ... sponsorship.  It"s not a case of "let"s just move the games to another network ... APAT are always striving to get the best possible deal in order to offer it"s members added value.  I"ll play where they go.

I"m personally grateful that we still have APAT running - especially in harder times all round.

You do realise that it"s not that simple...don"t you?

At the moment, APAT is making that money with, (I presume) a proportion going to BOSS and that is funding APAT going forwards.

Could it be improved, of course, and I have no doubts that this is high on the agenda for Matt/Des/Leigh but these things tend to move glacially (if at all).

At the moment, I can only say...don"t **** where you eat....it"s all very well to discuss shortcomings but let"s be careful about not throwing our toys out of the the pram and the baby with the bathwater.

OK, that"s enough metaphors / cliches from me

Try playing on ipoker atm, tbh Boss is not the best but it ain"t all that bad either and the holdem tourneys and cash games are really soft.

Seems to me that game selection is a more important criteria in choosing where to play.

The whole point of the card room is to make money. This (I would assume) helps make APAT more attractive to sponsors, helps fund live events and pays for some of the added value we all enjoy playing for. It allows Des and the rest of the team to actually run APAT. So APAT is a business model not something that is just there for our enjoyment. Yes our enjoyment is important as the business model fails without us, it"s customers, but if the business fails to make money (or at least cover its costs) there is no more APAT.

Now let"s be fair, it is no secret that the BOSS software could be improved a lot. It isn"t Pokerstars, but that does not matter. I am not going to go and play a large volume on there tbh but I will play a small amount of cash games each month and the APAT events on there to support APAT, and yes, play with the APAT community. I know that by doing this I am helping in a tiny way to ensure the continuation of APAT and the live events. The fact that there is great added value to win in these things does not hurt either. I think a slightly clunky piece of software is actually a small price to pay for the massive benefits we get. At the end of the day the software is not even that bad, we are only playing a simple card game. Are there really any other options that are any better. The only one is ipoker and personally I would not want to see an APAT card room on that network (Blonde Poker Cardroom anyone?).

The only vote that counts is that of Des, although I am sure he would take the communities views into consideration, he has to have a profitable business to ensure he is giving the members the best possible experience, and most would say go with whatever gives APAT the best deal. Knowing Des he will have already tied this up, the responses in this thread seem to back this up. So I don"t think a vote would not actually achieve anything in this case.

The discussion is a good one though.

Pretty much my thoughts.

Sure stars/tilt have the best software, but the games are so much tougher.

I actually think that BOSS is one of the better "minor league"  skins that I have played on

stars/tilt > Party > Boss > 888 > ipoker > ongame > entraction etc...

Great discussion and while I"m rarely a fan of the style of opening post that Chris has posted, I"m sure the message in it is sincere.

I can"t really respond now as I"d probably need an hour to do so, but I can tell you that this is a topic that is continually on our agenda when Leigh, Matt and I have our weekly meeting.

I"ll try to post my thoughts on this thread this evening.

I might run a book on the number of **** is this post.   ;D

Seriously though, if I racked up the number of hours spent over the past few months with regard to the software, it would be a scary number.

As Des has eluded to, it is such a complex subject, but well worth a discussion with members.  Just off out to get some popcorn in anticipation of Des's post.   ;)
