WSOP Main Event - best way of paying?
« on: February 15, 2013, 18:28:03 PM »
I am planning on playing the ME this year, and was wondering if anyone had a view on how to pay.

Do I (i) pay up-front with a £30 bank fee for the transfer; (ii) set up a US Dollar bank account, which probably costs more; or (iii) take cash with me, which would be more than $10,000 and so would be breaking US law (although not by much and they never check).

Views?

P.S. Would anyone be interested in having a piece? I was thinking of selling 20%-25% of the action, no mark up. Obviously I would do a proper staking post.

Joe

It"s not against US law to carry more than $10k in currency (or currency equivalents) you just have to declare it on your Customs Form.

As long as you can explain WHY you have it you should have no trouble.

Frankly, to avoid any issues...pay the £30.

Personally if i could afford to lump $10k into the buy in im not going to worry about paying £30 fees on top, as Ger said done and dusted no hassle..

Staking i think you would be able to sell %s yes.. if you opened a thread i would be interested but only prehaps 1% as im poor..

Good luck in your quest, and enjoy the experience.. I have played the ME (brag  :) ) and still to this day remember nearly every minuet of the time i played with utter joy ... priceless

1-2% pls mate!!......I took cash last time I played it but had missus with me so just gave her half to take through customs!!......if u declare it not a prob but dont get caught as they will fck u and confiscate the lot!!......dont ever say u a professional poker player(which u not obv anyway).....just say u going on jolly and gonna do the lot in their lovely city!!.....so to answer I prefer taking cash as hate sending in advance as cages dont like giving u all at once and want u to spend all in their casino!!......if take cash make sure get spot rate of london broker(pm/text me for dets) rather than post office or the likes.

Glgl mate and speak soon

Thanks everyone! I think you"re right - just pay the £30. My worry is I send off $10,000 and then there"s no email receipt or something. Utterly irrational!

On the bankroll note, apparently you"re not meant to risk more than 2%-3% of your bankroll on any tournament. That must mean my bankroll is pushing $500,000. Hmm. Basically I"m doing what you should never doing and spinning up most of my profit from last year. Give a sh*t. You only live once!

If you are bothered about carrying the money then wire it to the Rio, otherwise just declare you are carrying it. As Paulie said it isn"t illegal to bring in more than 10k just illegal to not declare it. doesn"t add much time onto passing through customs as it takes bloody ages anyway.

The limits are per household so this is the same as carrying it all yourself.

As others have said just declare it, this is Vegas after all - they understand (and want) the money people bring.
I know a couple of people that have taken more than 10K and not declared it and been hours in customs as a result.....

All that said I can see you"ve decided to wire it, which has to be the best option. Consider the cost as insurance against you losing it.........
