As a younger man, I used to get seduced by the "free ring binder with Part One", "free dividers with Part Two", and other such marketing evil.

I would then be disappointed as it was discontinued from about Part Four as it appealed to about 0.00000001% of the population.

I did do that sciencey one for a bit though, until I got bored of science - Quest?

Has anyone ever completed one of these magazine series where you get a bit of something each week in order to construct some collection or model?

I"ve just seen one advertised for Formula One, where you can collect a piece of a McLaren F1 car each week.
Introductory price: £1.99 (not too bad).
Usual price: £7.99 (for a mag and a bit of plastic?)
85 issues

So, thats £673.15 for a set of magazines and an airfix model of a car, my flight to Vegas cost me less...........

You can also get a full Spanish Galleon for a few sheckles short of a press ganging! They"re a complete scam  >:(

Well, you know I had a rant about going to the bank at lunchtime and the awful queues. The second cheque for the electricity part of my switch arrived yesterday. So Plan B.

I looked up the Post Office on the internet and sure enough it says that I can deposit Lloyds TSB cheques over the counter into my account. So I thought that saves popping out from work, I can go to ASDA in the evening and use the post office there.

So after work I toddle into ASDA and there is a bit of a queue but I am in no rush this time. I get to the cashier and politely say that I wish to deposit a cheque into my Lloyds TSB account.

"No problem sir, place your card in the reader" says she

I do so and hand over the cheque.

"Enter your pin code please" says she

I do so

"Oh, it would appear that in order for us to process this cheque we require you to fill out a deposit slip and place it in an envelope" says she

"Where will I get this deposit slip" says I looking around

"At your local Lloyds TSB branch" says she

"Oh OK, I'll just pop down to my local branch and get the slip and an envelope and pop back later to deposit the cheque here then Shall I?" I replied with what I hoped was my best sarcastic voice.

"OK see you later then" she replied with no hint or irony whatsoever.

You could not script it, you really could not.....

The aquarium is what it is, cheap beer, live poker and some craic. When we got home myself and the wee man had a chat as he was feeling a bit down about his play. I think he plays too tight a game (no jokes please about my stupid plays). So I popped the ould chestnut of a question.

"Do you want to win the last longer or the tournament" says I
"Huh" says he
"Fair question" says I

So we mulled it around and it transpires he has a certain fear of shoving with a lesser range in position. Now during this conversation it occurred to me that I am, possibly, not the best person to give the wee man advice.  8)

He described a few scenarios to me and in each and every one of them I said I would be all in. His face was a picture  ;D

We agreed to differ on some, but he has agreed he needs to have some different moves in certain situations (stack size, pot size, postion, personalities etc.). Watch out Newcastle two Smyth's playing ubber aggressive.

Priceless....

Ok the last couple of days have been hectic firming up the Irish teams for Newcastle. I am really proud to play for the team and am looking forward to it immensely.

In celebration tonight I shall be attending the aquarium and will be getting rip roaringly slaughtered, whilst playing with an abandon that would make you smile.........

Aintree was finacially neutral, backed £62 - returned £64. Thank God 888 paid to 5  ;D

Aquarium was as expected last night when I was outdonked in a very funny game. Carl and I then chopped the side game. Had a few beers with a great crew and it is what it is......

Tonight I will be mostly relaxing and watching the golf while playing in the iPad2 challenge.

You get a bully at your table, you know loves to chat and tell you how good he is. He raises at every opportunity, huge raises and shoves all in very often, he now has loads of chips.

You wait, you wait some more, then he pushes when you have AA, you wait, you pause and you smack a big raise in. He calls, flop is immaterial really. (it was J 5 3). He is first to act so he reverts to type and bets the pot, you smile and you wait a couple of seconds then you pounce because you know he will call if he has any of that. You go all in - he calls and turns over QJ

The software gnomes then kick in and give him a J on the turn.

I love this game.........

Now a news story on the BBC got my attention the other day.

More than 230 out of 1,250 pupils were removed from classes at a school in Cambridgeshire as part of a head teacher"s zero-tolerance programme. About one in five City of Ely Community College pupils were disciplined on the first day of a crackdown on "low-level disruptive behaviour".

To me this is about time, most parents agreed but I was gobsmacked at some parents who violently disagreed. Teachers have a tough time as it is and need support. So what were the things that were not allowed that upset some parents. FFS the majority were removed from class for not adhering to the school uniform and using mobile phones in class. Forgive me but I thought pupils were in school to learn, silly me.

An interesting fact is the number of offenders is dropping dramatically every day. This is not returning to the days of corporal punishment this is just common sense and respect for the school, all schools should adopt this approach.

Work has been manic at the moment and long may it remain so. Being busy with various projects is great and it also helps that I love my job. Next week sees me back in Swindon to oversee the installation of the new generation of truck mounted radio terminals. Then it's off to Scotland the week after for a flying visit. To be honest I used to enjoy the trips out a lot more in the past than I do now. It's not the depots, they are great, it's the driving. I must be getting lazy in my old age.

Anyway, it's the next stage in the APAT league tonight and I hope that we have the same if not better turnout than last week. These games are always tough and I am looking forward to tonight.
