tournament structure tweak
« on: October 14, 2014, 16:29:01 PM »
Apat is well known for having a great tournament structure. Can I suggest a small adjustment for next season.
The removal of the 150 ante and 250 ante.
If the antes progressed from 25 to 50 to 100 to 200 to 300 to 500 this would be an improvement in my opinion.

Agree with this. The 25s should have been out of play by the end of day 1.

Otherwise the structure is perfect.

It should be pointed out that we normally try to play at least 12 levels on Day 1.

The antes are 300 at Level 13 when we come back on Day 2 and we can colour up then.

http://www.apat.com/index.php/live-schedule/tournament-structure/

For a variety of reasons we finished at Leeds Day 1 at the end of Level 11.

I think the structure works fine as it is. The antes should, I think the consensus is, be 1/8 of the big blind..and what we have has been working for us for some time

I just wish we got 8 x 25 each instead of, quite often, 4 in the original stacks.

Casinos just hardly ever stock enough meaning the dealers are making change more often and slowing the game down.

I"ve copied the structure below for your info - the 25s go out of play after level 8, and ideally I"d have run the Leeds event until after Level 12 when we could also have got rid of the 50s (or if not used the 25s - as we know most casinos ONLY use 25s and do not use 50s) for the start of Day 2 - but felt with runners left etc it was best to stop after Level 11.  Also, sometimes it"s best to leave the casino to it, even though it"s not going according to my OCD nature! - they were just a little pushed/stressed about a few things, and chipping up was one of them - especially on Day 2 when the chipping up happened when players were at the table and therefore delayed play - far from perfect, but overall, they did a good job - but NORMALLY, we"d run the event until at least Level 12 and therefore get rid of 25s/50s.

The level I have most issue with is is L8 when the ante"s are 75.

It takes more time than its worth, either leave them at 50 or raise to 100.

I agree that it would make things easier to also get rid of 150 & 250 antes.

The game is slowed by the dealer badgering players for them and giving change.

Mind you players don"t help. Some find it difficult to remember them but to be fair once they start it"s only every hand you have to put them in. :)

One thing that tilts the hell out of me when players call a 400 bet with (16 x) 25 chips, then 2 hands later they are asking me for F"in change so they pay their ante.

Also to those that pay their blind in the smallest denomination - every time you do this, a kitten dies.

And the dealer will hate you.

There"s one thing worse than this though (and I"ve only seen it a couple of times and never in an APAT event). There are people out there who feel it"s clever to hoover up all the small chips by paying a single 100 chip when the ante is 25 etc in order to get stacks of small chips to a) make it look like they are winning more pots than they are and b) to make their stack look a lot bigger than it is leaving everyone else at the table constantly scrabbling around for change and slowing the game considerably.

Whenever I see anyone doing this and refusing to stop I make sure that I loudly announce to the table exactly what he is doing and why and hopefully they stop... These people are lower than pond life in my eyes.

I do this occasionally.

Normally it is the last few minutes before the end of the level that the chip up will occur and it is solely to assist the dealers etc.

My viewpoint is simple. If you want lots of chips, do this, but dont be an ass about being asked to give change if you have the lot.

"Lower than Pond life" is a touch extreme, when the crime is hoarding small chips.

Every starting stack should include 8x25s and 8x100s.

And every bet should be made with the minimum number of chips possible. If I had my way I would muck the hand of anyone who puts more than 3x25s or 4x100s into the pot.

I don"t think chip tower builders are scum though.
