Start times for live play
« on: July 21, 2008, 20:41:02 PM »
Is there any reason why live weekly tournaments start so late? Tournaments at my local Grosvenor Casino commence at 9pm. Is there a recommended time or is it at the discretion of the casino?
I cannot see the need for tournaments to start so late. It means that the final table, to which we all try to aspire, does"nt start until 2 or 3am, finishing at 4am or even 5am. What is the point when the majority of players are ready to play by 7.30pm? All players are amateurs and as such probably have a day job, how can they stay till 5 in the morning?

As far as I am aware it"s down to the card room/ company. But I"d guess they want to allow as much time for people to finish work, get home, changed and down to the casino. They then get max numbers starting a game, whereas they"re not as concerned about your start back to work. Yes... there are those who don"t bother also because of this but I"d guess that they have done their number crunching and found more play at 9pm regardless of work next day as opposed to those they lose through not starting earlier, IMO.
If I say something that offends you, please tell me. I may want to offend you again later ;-)

The main reason most casinos start poker tourneys at 8:30 or later is historically due to shifts. The afternoon shift is usually a lot smaller and cant cope with the number of dealers required to start a tourny. So Casinos normally schedule tourneys to coincide with their evening shift starting.

In my experience- DTD and APAT tourneys aside they never start on time either. Breaks are far longer than advertised- also very annoying!

in my opinion, live poker is set up for night owls. us poor buggers who have to get up for work can"t play much liver poker....    too many times i"ve gone to play games starting at 9.30 thinking i"ll be fine with a  late night, and then haven"t got home til 5am, and have to be up for work at 6.
