WSOP fantasy league 2015
« on: April 30, 2015, 13:14:02 PM »
Hi folks,

With the WSOP just 4 weeks away, are we interested in doing our yearly fantasy league? Have been running for the last few years and always been a nice way of keeping up on the news from Vegas..
Last year Des was even kind enough to add a ME seat to a national event as added value to the winner!! So perhaps he will do the same kind gesture this year ;D?
We need to see how much interest is shown before we give it the thumbs up or down, last year John kindly agreed to do a spreadsheet and log points/scores etc, with myself and Chris helping to collect funds and look for point scores etc.. I"m happy to collect and look for points as usual, and maybe John and Chris will also help again.

We also need to have a look at rules/points etc as there is always some teething problems each year.
So do we have the usual categories to choose from and then 3 wild cards? Or completely change it and have 8-10 complete random picks? Do we give 1 point for cash 3 points for FT and 8 points for win? Etc etc..

Discuss.. Need to get up and running in the next couple of weeks to try and increase numbers.

Last years I think was def the best run so far, happy to help again. On my phone at the mo, could someone post the categories from last year and the scoring ? Think it"s still worth having a look even if we decide it"s fine as it is?? Do we need categories? Would it be more interesting with a team of wild cards?

Please PM your team that you choose to John Murray (Mintrav).

The rules are pretty simple, choose 1 player from the catergories below, and 3 wild cards of your choice. You can either choose a player listed or draft in one of your own choice, that fits that particular catergory. You also need to nominate 1 of your players to be team captain, this player will score double points for you. Closing date will be on May 25th.

Scoring..

5 points if they win a Bracelet
3 points for a Final Table apperance (last 8 of HU event)
1 point for a cash

2 points for ME cash
5 points for Nov 9
10 points for ME win

Prizes..

We will hold a prizepool if you decide to join the payed game, which will cost £10 if you want both series and ME sweat, or £5 if you just want one or other (please state when submitting team). Depending on how many play will depend on how many places will pay. (this will be decided when registration closes on May 25th)
Des has kindly offered a added value prize consisting of a live main event ticket which will also be won by the winning contestant..
If you decide to play for fun you would still be in with a chance of winning this.

Think the scoring is great for the series. Would prefer to go back the total amount a team cashes for in the main event but obviously happy with what the majority prefer?

With picking a team would prefer to just pick 8 players as I think the category system can lead to a few pics that everyone has which can make it a tad boring?

We having a captain pick again?

What about then having 8 picks, but there has to be at least a female, European, English and former champ of anyone"s choice, instead of say just 8 picks that will probably be made up of mainly American/male..?

Could always scrap the ME sweat and just run it £10 for the series winner?

Happy to play along again, although the scoring looks a bit wonky tbh.

To only get 4 more points for winning a bracelet over a min cash seems a bit mean.

How about 1 for a cash, and then the F1 scoring system, so 9th gets 2, 8th gets 4, 7th gets 6, 6th gets 8, 5th gets 10, 4th gets 12, 3rd gets 15, 2nd gets 18 and the winner gets 25.

We ran this in our online event last year and it worked really well as everyone has a chance to get back in it after a slow start.

Just my opinion obv  ;)

Yes sounds a good idea IMO.. Only problem is if one player wins a bracelet and gets a 2nd or 3rd would it mean it"s pretty much over? Dunno.. But I like the idea of a player being rewarded more for snagging a bracelet.. Wonder if Don is going this year  :D

I would like that a lot. For me, a lot of the fun is finding players who have done well before but are not on everyone"s list. Several of last year"s teams started with Hellmuth, Negreanu, Ivey and Selbst plus four others. It does make some sense as they play all the events and do well, so you almost guaranteed a good base, though it means there is little reward for being innovative. At the end of last year"s competition I was intending to recommend that those four would not be eligible to be included in teams this year, to make it more interesting.

However, on reflection, it is probably important for us to make it as easy as possible for people and not put them off. It wouldn"t be much fun if we only got about nine entries cos we had made it difficult so, reluctantly, I am inclined to think that we need the lists so that more people can just make picks easily.

I would be pleased if there are lots of opinions disagreeing with that.

Think the best way is to leave it open and NOT have a list of players in the selected catergories so you have free range of choice.. Tbh I"m looking at say having 4 set catergories and 4 wild cards (although it pretty much is all wild cards if you choose out of the box)
Previous ME winner
European
Female
English
Then 4 wildcards
Perhaps a captain again who scores x2 points? But if using F1 style scoring could mean if the captain wins a bracelet 50 points would be pretty hard for another player to catch up..
