In the beginning, the next chapter
« on: December 08, 2008, 09:22:22 AM »
In the beginning, the next chapter

With season three about to begin, I thought I would give this blog thing another go. My first attempt at a blog was a disaster; I only did it because of the chance of winning a seat at a national event plus a bit off bulling from Des (I should have reported him)

As in my first attempt, I am not a comedian and yes I am dyslexic. So please don't mock me, as me doing this is a big thing for me.

In my first blog I said I would not talk about bad beats, well in this blog you will get bad beat stories (lots of them) I will talk about mainly APAT tournaments, on-line and live but will also talk about other games if I think it would be of any interest to you. I will also talk about poker in general,, bankroll, tactics, other formats, ect ect. So pleas feel free to join in.

All it remains now is for Des to announce season 3 then I can start

I hope this isn"t going to turn into a "lets have a go at all SirPerc"s bad plays" thread. That could go on forever....

Pay out structure

A couple of weeks ago I came second in a $24 MTT on Full Tilt winning $1600. The first prize was a full $1000 more (I won't bore you with the hands) but it got me thinking about APAT pay out structure.

Now in this game I got to the FT in 8th out of 9, my plan from here in was to try and ladder up in prize money, as the top three were out of sight. By playing very tight and a few blind steels I manage to survive whilst the big stacks knock out the other players. Finally finishing in 2nd but no complaints as it was a 6 to 1 chip difference.

But if this was an APAT live tournament would my play be different? If you are lucky to get to the FT, 9th to 4th place are paid the same so trying to ladder is not an option you have to go for the win. Example, if you were in 6th place and the chip leader moves all in, you look down at your cards and see 66, now in any other tournament this would go in the muck. But in an APAT game this would be a call.  So why as APAT made it this way? It makes the tactics of the game different from all other games played either on-line or live.

P.S before anybody else say's it, I will never get that far so this would not matter to me (but you never know ;))

The WSOP also does the same thing at the lower payout levels. I suspect that it"s just to keep things simple Wayne. After all, do Des and co really want to be working out % amounts (trying to keep them as round as poss) when they have more important things to look after at these events ?

An interesting point though.

Des wouldn"t have to work out any percentages; The casino software can work it all out for him.

I think the APAT payout structure is deliberately put in place to encourage players not to ladder and go FTW.

I know I am over 2 weeks late but the first game of season 3 was not worth talking about. After all the anticipation and all the discussion on buy-in (to much to low) the structure, how many will play, no regional's and so on. So the fist tournament had arrived, it was like the start of the football season, all teams are level and this year will be your teams year then 90 minuets later, you know nothing as changed.
I sat down at 7.45, turned the computer on, logged on to Blue Square, played 2 hands in an hour, turned the computer off, turned on casualty that's right casualty. The 2 hands were straight forward, without boring you it was a flush vs. a bigger flush and then a flopped top 2 pair vs. a flopped bottom set and that was that, the end.

Now on to the most exciting part of season three, The Poker League. This must be the most talked about section of the new season. It has brought a lot of new people to APAT. Now there seems to be a lot of talk about the best way to tackle it, do you need as many members as possible are do you try and get quality in your team? The tournament is 3 in 1. 1st  it's a $10 game so you are playing for your self, for the cash, 2nd you are playing for the points for your team, as the top 3 teams go forward to the final, 3rd you are playing for points within your team as only the top 4 will get the GUKPT seats.

The one thing I don't like about it is that I have to play for Leeds. I don't mean that in a bad way, as we have the best captain in the league.(I don't care that he is Scottish :))  It's just that I am from Rotherham, South Yorkshire and Leeds is in West Yorkshire so you can see were I am going with this. I was brought up hating Leeds but here I am playing for them and on top of that against the best football team in the world Liverpool (after the millers that is)

After looking at the teams, all I can say is that I feel sorry for the people who live in the north and south as the winners will come from the central division and that will be LEEDS.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN

Away from APAT I won my first live tournament over Christmas (chopped top two) so Ian, you can not say I can not play live. The next time you sit next to me I won't let you take my blind, over and over and over again. Over the past month I have had another go at cash games. And guess what I won. 4 out of 5 sessions making a steady profit then one night it all went Pete Tong and the profit was gone with a bit more on top. So it's back to what I know best, tournaments.

Thats the problem with cash you can have numerous winning sessions and then lose a chunk all in on go! That happened to me last night, after  a long winning streak, I had a touch of the Macho poker player and lost all I had won in the last week :-\ Looking forward to the league, and you are dead right Wayne, Leeds will be the winners :)
