thats it, enough is enough
« on: February 15, 2009, 16:46:36 PM »
hi, it seems that i usually whinge on here but this needs to be discussed. today i went to play in a £25 freezeout nlhe and i had a terrible bad beat(check out another norfolk poker player blog to read it there). recently i have been on the receving end of beat after beat, moral is very low and confidence is out of the window, i feel that it was the final straw and i am considering quitting poker alltogether, i love the game so much and im learning all the time and studying the game all the time aswell.

is there something i can do to reverse the bad run that im in the middle of or is quitting the best thing i can do???

I have been there before, and I generally play my way through it, it can knock confidence for six for a while, but you will boost up again once the cashes start coming.

I personally would play through it.

I guess positive mental attitude.

I really helps to play well within your bankroll - I mean about the 1% area not 2 (MTT) or 5(STT/cash) that most play to.  It certainly makes the bad beats easier to take.

Hang on in there - it is a great game.

Good advice.

Taking a break, playing through it, changing the game you play, dropping down stakes, playing more live/online, etc., are all valid options.

Variance is a bugger.

Sick with it, I ran colod for 3 months, but had the bankroll to cover it.

I would definitely advise taking a break. Ban yourself for, say, a week, go away, reread Harrington and you will come back all the more ready for action. As long as your girlfriend doesn"t read this, if you tell her you"re taking a few days off poker to spend more time with her, then you could also pick up a few brownie points as well!
However, I recommend you only go into exile after taking part in tonight"s league contest.

All good advice and everyone suffers from this. i have at least two meltdown episodes a week of bad beats and beign of the wrong side of coolers like set over set and flush over flush etc.

funnily enough however, some may disagree with this, but i think if you are only playing every now and then, you should play more often, as variance will even itself out again. You cant stop the coolers and cold decks but with the bad beats, your hands will start holding up and as long as you "ALWAYS" make the correct decision you will start making profit...

We"ve all been there - I had the "I"m giving up" episode last weekend.

All the above advice is great - play more hands, be more conservative on bankroll, play fewer hands, play different games (my favourite), read some strategy (also my favourite, find leaks, reinforce positive play)...

But the PMA is also a great one.  Ultimately we will all suffer these periods, and those who play through it and come out the other side will be the survivors.  Also, when it happens again, you"ll know you came through it before.  It"s not our successes which truly define us, but how we handle our setbacks...

Ultimately you"ve answered your own question - you love the game.  Now play it for the love of it and let the money follow!

great motivation speech oneill....this is the reason why we are all playing the game i think. Because we love it. Im not good enough to make some serious money in poker and im never gonna be a pro, but i keep playing because i love the game......

Once i start not liking the game (its happenend a few times) i will knock it on the head. but for now, it keeps me in on a sunday night...(and monday, tues, wed etc...)
