I saw these "parma" things on Come Dine With Me tonight and have to admit they look rather tasty. Anybody know anything about them?
If it is a Parmo you are talking about, it is unique to the Middlesbrough/Stockton area , never seen it on offer either in takeaway form or in a restaurant any further south than Northallerton about 15 miles away.
It is either an escalope of pork or chicken in breadcrumbs covered in White bechemel sauce and topped with cheddar cheese, usually the size of a frisbee.
The standard can vary from the ridiculously bad in certain takeaways to an absolute joy in a decent restaurant.
This dish became popular in the eighties in a really rough restaurant in the eighties called the Europa in the Boro, it was the only place to eat after the nightclubs kicked out so there was always a massive q, it was always seved with chips, salad ( half a tomato and a lettuce leaf) and tinned peas, I don"t think it ever reached Michelen Stars status for some unknown reason but that was where the legend was born.
Nb if it was not a Parmo you were talking about then apologies, but every day is a learning day.
