I watched a couple of last year"s Oscar faves today, namely War Horse and The Descendants. Before I sat down with the munchies, the former I wasn"t too interested in and the latter I was really looking forward to, though TBH I found the results were completely the opposite.

War Horse was far more exciting, emotional and entertaining than I expected it would be, with very strong performances from a largely British cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Peter Mullan and Emily Watson. The star of the movie "Joey" completely stole the show though and had me enthralled throughout.

The Descendants, despite a fine performance from George Clooney, didn"t fill me with any inspiration at all as it fizzled out to a rather undramatic conclusion. I had high hopes for this misfit family drama, which admittedly had it"s moments, but nowhere near enough to keep me interested for 2 hours. Ultimately it left me with no empathy or feeling for the characters, despite their vulnerabilities, weaknesses and traumas that surrounded them.

Finished 33rd of 5777 runners last night in the Big $4.40 on Stars and felt pretty deflated afterwards. Played solid poker for the vast majority of the 7 hours and for most part was well above chip average for about 5 and a half hours of it. Made a couple of costly errors late on when tiredness started slapping me about the face about 4am and left myself struggling once into the final 100. After a recent 112/3000+ and 11/130 I"m needing to iron out the concentration lapses late on to make that final push.

Cheers to all who railed me on well into the early hours including Sharon Roberts, Chas Kearns, Johnny Barr, Ray Crowe and Gary Purcell (who was in the same tourney for a long time & I look forward to seeing again at the Scottish in October).

Thanks gang, much appreciated.

and 87th of 2958 runners tonight in 5k guaranteed. Dumped out unceremoniously with flopped 2 pairs v set  ::) Was all going so well again up to that point, other than losing 10 minutes earlier with KK v A5 short stack AIPF for 1/3 of my stack, who still hit his ace despite the BB showing A/10 folded  :D

17 of 23 won at showdown (73%) and 27 pots won without

There"s always tomorrow................ ;)

Last night I decided to get a bit of low stakes cash PLO for a nice change. Only $12.50 investment and just over $10 profit but happy with the practice.

Tonight managed to get out for a nice bite to eat at Bella Italia and a visit to cinema for Dark Knight Rises. TBH the movie wasn"t dark enough for my liking and was more New York than Gotham, but still a throroughly enjoyable watch with some good performances. My old workmate Cameron Jack even got a speaking role so after what seems like a lifetime of TV parts, stage and musicals my fingers are crossed that we"ll see much more of him on the big screen  ;)

Back on the horse again last night and my first ever game in the Sunday Storm. Pretty horrendous event TBH don"t recall winning a hand, missed 2 boards with AK in first 3 levels that were fairly costly then induced a raise on aggro table with AQ and shipped in behind the raiser and 2 callers with AQ for 30BBs. Duly got called by one of the callers with A8, who duly went on to bink a flush and bust me out. Happy with how I played the hand against those opponents on that table as I was confident I was well ahead of their ranges.

Went on to $5.50 1000 capped tourney later on and some more sick beats saw me exit in 7th for a tidy $150. At FT was sitting pretty comfortable and again induced a shove from a shortie (for his 3rd time after I min+ raised). I snap called him, again for same reason I"m sure I"m ahead of his range with A7 and caught him with 5/7....you can guess the rest. A while later AA no good v shorties Q/10, but did take a small side pot to keep me afloat. Final demise saw me shove with AQs on button for 16 BBs behind an even shorter stacks all in, only to run into SB with KK and no help  :(

Still another decent result and getting closer to the (at the moment) elusive top prizes  ;)

Things that make you go Mmmmm

Sat down at 2 PLO cash tables last night for a bit more training and still can"t get my head round the max buy-in for 2 c /5c being $12.50 yet for 5 c /10c it"s $10 Mmmmmmmmm ??? Anyways I bought in to both for max as usual looking forward to a couple of hours of leisurely fun.

1st hand at the 5 c /10c table I sat down with auto-blind in cut off with 2c 3h 9s Js, someone raised in EP to 25c and got 3 callers so seemed rude to fold  ;). Flop delivered 8s 10c Qs  ;) ;) ;) ;) ........this hit 3 of us straight in the chops and we were all in pre as betting went mental. I was up against QQxx and As 7s xx, blank turn made me smile and I"m sure river made everyone smile initially when the 10s dropped ;D Straight up from $10 to 28 first hand, Mmmmmmmm!
Ended the 90 minute session with $44 total and a little more profit for the bankroll.

Not expecting much action in next couple of days as I gear up for holiday in Sorrento on Friday, only 3 sleeps and I can"t wait to go see the big yellow globe in the sky and spend some quality time with Annie Apple and 2 of our friends. Good times ahead as tomorrow brings an August full of optimism  8)

3 nights in a row in same tourney and 3rd cash, finishing 15th of 185 after flopping Q flush v A flush. Off to Sorrento tomorrow for my first trip to Italy and a week in the sun. Leaving laptop at home so no poker for at least 7 days, seems a shame after 8 cashes in 12 days but glad for the break TBH. GL to everyone at the tables over the next week  8)

Came back from Nottingham to no Broadband as planned switchover from BT to Sky last Wednesday didn"t go to plan due to the fact that the latter stupidly hadn"t posted my new router to me till I managed to get them on the phone. Thankfully back to normality now and looking forward to catching up with everyone again following the most awesome weekend.

Thanks huge amounts to my Scotland team mates for their performances over the first 2 days, our points tally didn"t do our play justice in the end but a fine time was still had all the same. Many congratulations to Frank & the Republic of Ireland team on their win and to the others who contributed to such a great event 8)

Unfortunately I"m working that Friday till 10pm and it"s not likely to change  :( Where are you staying Steve? If your near the city centre then it"s like most towns with a load of cheap ale establishments (eg Wetherspoons & Lloyds) within walking distance.

10pm is early, it"s apat.

Staying in the etap by the casino. I know at least three others are as well so could easily get a taxi somewhere.
