Fry ups - Do Baked Beans have a place on our National Dish?
« on: February 22, 2011, 00:08:02 AM »
Now, I should point out that I love baked beans and the fry up is probably not our national dish BUT

for me the perfect fry up only has fried items in it?

What do you think Wayne? (or anyone else)

It"s an interesting point.  For me it"s important to distinguish between a "fry-up," a "full-English," and a "cooked breakfast."  A fry-up by definition should only include fried items.  A full-English can and should include non-fried items such as beans (but never ever potatoes). A cooked-breakfast however can include further side orders such as hash browns and that sort of corned beef hash type stuff you get in America.

Tin of beans
Real butter when they are warmed up (about half way)
Sliced raw Onion in for the last 60 seconds

No need to thank me

Beans definitely, but they have to be cold straight from the tin, not warmed so they go all claggy & horrible.

I have to admit to being partial to non fried items in an American "cooked breakfast" such as pancakes with blueberries.

However I always seem to treat Baked beans as a cheap shot on my breakfast plate.

I will certainly give Ger"s idea a bash, though will reserve it for a lunchtime beans on toast or as my favourite side with cottage pie at dinner time.

FWIW - I love my baked beans with hot pepper sauce

SO my ideal fry-up comes from a combo of my Northern Irish and Northern English roots

plain pork sausages (none of those fancy ones with fruit and veg in)
smoked back bacon
fried mushrooms
fried tomato
potato bread
soda bread
black pudding
2 eggs (sunny side up)

no toast, no beans, no spuds

washed down with a pot of tea.

so that"s porridge for breakfast tomorrow ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't know about Backed Beans or tined Tomatoes but one thing you MUST have with a fry-up, full English or cooked breakfast is Black Pudding cut thickly. For the record I have both Beaked Beans and tined Tomatoes. The one thing that doesn't belong on any breakfast plate is potato in any shape or form.

Beans are essential with a "Full English", I can do without the tomatoes, but without beans the whole fry up is a bit dry. I love American breakfast where you can put anything with anything, when in Vegas in January I had Blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, bacon, fresh fruit, and those flat sausages they do over there on the same plate!

Whether it"s called a fry up or a full English, it wouldn"t be complete without Baked Beans and/or tinned Plum Tomatoes, preferably with a generous splash of Tabasco sauce.

You can merge the two threads and have a breakfast on a bread cake

Not sure if my comments are welcome on this thread given that we consider "full English" to be a  "National" dish.

Scottish and Irish breakfasts are miles better IMO.

As usual the Scots are on the war path.

We"ll let you call it a "National" dish as I believe that you have a White Pudding on your breakfast?

Is there any Haggis on it or do you eat that terrible stuff only once a year?
